  • The growth of leaves in field-grown head lettuce(cv. Urake) was compared after conventional application of N-P-K fertilizer or after application of various dilutions of livestock waste solution. Plants treated with livestock waste solution diluted 25 times (Ef. 25) or 50 times (Ef. 50) had greater growth than that for any other treatment. The number of leaves was greater with Ef. 25 than that with other treatments, although the increase was not statistically significant. Total head yield increased by fertigation with livestock waste solution compared to yield resulting from conventional fertilization. Plant tissue weight was increased according to the increase in concentration of applied livestock waste solution. The soil chemical properties, pH, electrical conductivity, $NH_4^+-N$, NO$_3$-N, available P exchangeable Ca and Mg, all increased with the increased application of livestock waste solution. In conclusion, fertigation of the dilute livestock waste solution on the range of Ef. 25 to Ef. 50 could improve yield and quality in head lettuce.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes of soil properties for potato and Chinese cabbage after application adding phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in the mounded highland soil from 1999 to 2001. Experimental plots were designed with control(NPK+Lime+Compost) and chemical improvement(Control+Application adding P and K). Mounded soil before field experiment of first year(1999) was low in organic matter, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium, and the soil texture was loamy sand soil. After 3 years, the contents of soil organic matter increased a little, and available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium contents were remarkably increased. The crop growth in chemical improvement plot was better than control plot. Yield of chemical improvement plot in comparison with control plot was increased by 5~22% for potato and 6~25% for Chinese cabbage after 2~3 years.

  • The investigations were conducted to find out the situation of fertilizer use and the contents of soil chemical components on summer vegetable crops at 791 farmers' upland fields located in the parts of Gangwon-do, Gyengsangbuk-do and Jeollabuk-do of alpine area. Major vegetable crops were potato, Chinese cabbage, radish, carrot, onion, and cabbage. From the location surroundings cultivated alpine vegetable crops, the orders were Gangwon-do>Gyeongsangbuk-do>Jeollabuk-do part in the sizes of a fie1d area and the height above sea level, and Jeollabuk-do>Gyeongsangbuk-do>Gangwon-do part in the slope degrees. The soil texture was of wide distribution on sandy loam soil for Gangwon-do(76%) and Jeollabuk-do part(64%), and 1oam(42%) and sandy loam soil(35%) for Gyeongsangbuk-do part. From the numbers of investigated fields, the distribution of slope degree was wider than those of height above sea level in relation to location surroundings. The upland soils of 785 fields cultivated vegetable crops were sampled at 0~15 cm of top soil before seeding or transplanting and analyzed. On an average, pH, organic matter, available phosphate and exchangeable potassium, calcium, magnesium of soil were 5.7, $27.6g\;kg^{-1}$, $765mg\;kg^{-1}$, $1.16cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, $6.1cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, and $1.6cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. The average cation exchange capacity(CEC) of 120 sites in Gangwon-do part was $9.2cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$. The content of organic matter, exchangeable potassium, exchangeable calcium and exchangeable magnesium was higher, while that of available phosphate was lower with slope degrees. And the content of major chemical components in carrot soil was lower in comparison with other crop soils. The average levels of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, livestock manure and lime fertilizer of 785 Belds applied by farmers were 335, 198, 244, 12,680 and $1,750kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, for summer vegetable crops in alpine area. The average amounts of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ fertilizers applied by farmers in 785 Gelds of vegetable crops were higher 1.7~2.0-4.2~7.0-1.4~2.0 times on potato, 1.4~1.6-4.6~8.3-3.5~4.2 times on Chinese cabbage, and 1.2~1.3-4.2~7.2-3.0~3.61 times on radish than the rates of NPK fertilizers based on soil testing for each crop.

  • This study was carried out to determine environmental factors affecting the anthocyanin content of color-fleshed potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers. After planting of two color-fleshed potato cultivars of 'Hongyoung' and 'Jayoung' in different 14 locations, their soil chemical properties and meteorological data were evaluated, and anthocyanin contents of tubers were analyzed after harvest, additionally their relationship among them was analyzed through correlation analysis. In comparison with two cultivars, purple-fleshed 'Jayoung' potatoes showed higher anthocyanin content than red-fleshed 'Hongyoung' in almost locations. When locations were divided to three categories (highland, sub-highland and lowland) according to altitude, in general, highland-grown tubers had the higher content of anthocyanin compared to those grown in lowland. An analysis of the results of chemical components of soil showed that anthocyanin content of color-fleshed potato tubers was negatively correlated with the pH of soil. In addition, mean temperature and minimum temperature from 80 to 100 days after planting most significantly affected on the accumulation of anthocyanin in color-fleshed potato tubers, that is, higher content of anthocyanin was observed in tubers produced in locations with lower mean temperature and minimum temperature from 80 to 100 days after planting. This information can be useful to producers and industries in selection of proper fields for the production of color-fleshed potato tubers having high quality in Korea.

  • Factor analysis technique was employed to screen the principal indicators influencing soil and water qualities in the intensively cultivated areas of the Han River Basin. Soil chemical parameters were analyzed for the soil samples collected at intensive farming area in Pyungchang-Gun, and water quality monitoring data were obtained from the agricultural small catchments of Han River Basin during 1996 and 1997. Among the $11{\times}11$ cross correlation matrix, 29 correlations were significant out of 55 soil quality indicator pairs. The overall Kaiser's measure of sampling adequacy(KMS) value was acceptable with 0.60. Most indicators except iron were acceptable. Among soil indicators, the first factors showing high factor loadings were pH, Ca and Mg. The factor loading was the highest for Ca. The second factor could be characterized as phosphate and micronutrient. The third factor was organic matter and EC, and the fourth factor was potassium and Fe. Out of 190 water quality indicators, 86 correlations were significant. Overall KMS value was 0.74, but the KMS values for pH, TSS, Cd, Cu and Fe were lower than 50. The first factor of EC accounts 27.1 percents of the total variance, and showed high factor loadings with Na, Ca, $SO_4$, Mg, K, Cl, $NO_3$, and T-N. The second factor showed high loadings with Zn, Fe, Mn and Cd. The third to seventh factors could be characterized as $PO_4$, TSS, inorganic nitrogen, pH and T-P, and Cu factors, respectively. The factor score for EC was the highest in Kuri, followed by Chunchon, Dunnae and Daegwanryng. The factor score for heavy metals were the highest in the Daegwanryng. The results demonstrated that the factor analysis could be useful to select the most principal factor influencing soil and water qualities in the agricultural watershed.

  • In order to establish environmentally friendly phosphorus(P) and potassium(K) fertilizer application rates for rice cultivation in Korea, a field experiment was conducted in two different characterized paddy soils, higher and lower P and K content in soil from 2005 to 2006 in Suwon, Korea. Chuchong which is typical rice variety in Korea, was selected for experiment. Rice yields in base P-K fertilizer level ($30-30kg\;ha^{-1}$) and no P-K fertilizer level were 97~98% and 93~97% of standard P-K fertilizer level ($45-57kg\;ha^{-1}$), respectively. At the lower content of P and K in immatured paddy soil, the yield of no P plot was decreased by 7% compared to that of standard P-K plot. Significant difference in rice yield and yield characteristics was found neither in standard P-K fertilization plot nor in base P-K fertilization plot. There was no significant difference in P and K uptake at the harvest stage between standard P-K fertilizer plot and base P-K fertilizer plot. Phosphorus and K uptake was slightly decreased in no fertilizer plots compared to standard fertilizer plot. Phosphorus and K use efficiency of rice plant in base fertilizer plot was higher than that in standard fertilizer plot. Available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium content in soil at the harvest stage were increased in both standard and base fertilizer plot. But no significant difference of P and K content in ? was found between standard fertilizer plot and base fertilizer plot. Rice quality characteristics such as proportion of brewers rice, damaged kernel, broken rice, and content of amylose and protein were lowered in the base fertilizer plot than the standard fertilized plot, while the proportion of perfect kernel increased in the base fertilizer plot From the results, we generally recommend the base P-K fertilization ($30-30kg\;ha^{-1}$) instead of standard P-K fertilization ($45-57kg\;ha^{-1}$) for rice cultivation in Korea.
