  • We have developed a multi-channel fiber laser for tiled laser beam combining and a laser output array system for multi-beam alignment. The fiber laser is a master oscillator power amplifier configuration that has a common seed, a preamplifier, and a 7-channel amplifier. The output power of each channel is more than 10 W. The laser output array system is a packed cylindrical configuration for a high fill-factor, and it has capabilities for collimation and tilt control with built-in PZT. Multi-beam alignment to a target is successfully implemented using PZT controlled with a stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm.

  • This study was to find science high school students' perception about composing laboratory reports by grade. The instrument to survey the perception of them consisted of the perception about making a lab report, and the effect of compositing laboratory reports on the scientific concept understanding and the scientific inquiry ability. Subjects were 260 students of four science high schools in Seoul metropolitan city and Kyounggi province. Most of science high school students had a little positive perception about compositing lab reports, but they had very positive perception about the effects of it on the scientific concept understanding and scientific inquiry ability. There was the significant difference between grades, because the 10th grade students showed more positive perception toward compositing lab reports than the 11th graders(p<.05). The results suggested that different educational approaches and teaching strategies be needed for science high school students considering grades.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare science teachers' perceptions with students' perceptions about the important aims of laboratory activities in science instructions, to identify whether there was a difference between them. For the purpose, the two questionnaires were designed; for secondary science teacher and secondary student. The samples selected in each group were 108 middle school teachers, 109 middle school students, 104 high school teachers, and 110 high school students. The survey responses from each group were analyzed through multiple response method. The results indicated that science teachers selected the science process skills as important aim of laboratory activity whereas students selected the ability for creative problem-solving and the central tendency of teachers' responses about certain item-science process skill was relatively higher than students' responses about certain item-the ability for creative problem-solving. From these results, we found there was the difference between teachers' perception and students perception about the important aims of laboratory activities in science instructions.

  • This study analyzed the problems of skin beauty textbooks used in high school based on the NCS ability unit, and was to improve them. By the NCS standard, it focuses on the contents which can be learned during the high school course. The main results are as follows. First, the revision of textbooks is to contain NCS competency unit, which is excluded in spite of being taught. Second, Replacement is required for NCS 5 level beyond the high school. Third, the illustrated and photographic materials is revised to improve the understanding by maintaining consistency and visibility. Fourth, the contents on the practical skill need specific explanations and instructional materials. Fifth, to revise terminology and the notation system is needed in skin care. The results of this study can be used as basic data to develop an NCS learning module in the skin care field and high school textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the science learning motivation of technical high school students through comparison with general high school students. 596 high school students and 1063 general high school students participated in the study. Three statistical methods were used for data analysis: two-way ANOVA, independent sample t-test, and Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed that the interaction between school type and grade had a significant effect on the difference of students' motivation for science learning. There was a significant difference in learning motivation among general high school students according to academic year, while there was no significant difference between first and second grader of technical high school students. Especially, technical high school students showed low level of science learning motivation compared to the students in general high school. The correlations among five motivational factors of science learning motivation were also significantly lower than that of general high school students. Lastly, the result of correlation analysis between science motivation and academic achievement showed that second year students in technical high school had less correlation coefficients than the first year students. Given these results, it is necessary to develop a educational strategy for enhancing science learning motivation of technical school students. We will discuss the direction of science education for technical high school based on our findings.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between self-control, value consumption, and subjective happiness of high school students. In this study, self-control is the students' ability to control their thoughts and emotions and value consumption is the psychological mechanism of their consumer behavior. To conduct this study, 400 high school students were surveyed. Independent sample t-tests showed statistical significance in the results that are discussed below. First, subjective happiness among the participants varied according to their self-control levels. We observed that the higher their level of self-control was, the higher their subjective happiness was also likely to be. Second, there was a significant difference in subjective happiness based on the value consumption level of high school students. We observed that the higher their value consumption level was, the higher their subjective happiness also was.

  • Physics image and interest are factors that influence physics learning. Freshmen enter an engineering college under various learning conditions when they were in high school. Understanding physics image and interest according to characteristics of freshmen will help college physics education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physics image and interest of freshmen in an engineering college according to their gender and physics course completion in high school and discuss the educational implications of college students on physics learning. The subjects of the study are 664 first grade students in engineering college. We analyzed physics image and interest of students according to gender and physics course completion in high school. Physics image is analyzed using semantic analysis. As a result of the analysis, the physics image is different according to the physics course completion. Interest in Physics depends on gender and physics course completion. Finally, we discuss the educational implications of college physics learning for engineering students.
