  • Beams play an important role to transfer an applied load on the floor into columns. However, if the beams affected by a fire the length will be changed longer or shorter and the structural stability decreased gradually and resulted in structural failure. Therefore, the fire regulation requires that structural beam has to satisfied with a constant fire resistance. The fire resistance conducted by a constant size and boundary condition in an horizontal furnace. But this is not enough to adopt a beam made of high structural steels having various lengths. In this study, in order to suggest structural behaviors of beams made of high structural steels at high temperature, mechanical properties at high temperature and heat stress analysis were used and the surface temperature, expansion, displacement and variance of maximum load according to lengths of the beam were compared with those of SM 400.

  • In this study, We analyze structural behavior feature of column under reinforced-bar and concrete strength and load conditions and analyze optimal column diameter and construction cost through parameter study. In case we use the 40MPa high strength concrete instead of 27MPa concrete in pier, the results show positive effect in appearance of pier and cost because of small column diameter and low construction cost. Also, practical effect is proved by applying this results in pier of Shin Hou Bridge on Hum-Sung ${\sim}$ Chung-Ju highway construction work.

  • For high-strength steel, it is difficult to be applied to flexible structural member because it have high yield ratio and low basic material's toughness. One of the great problems when using high-strength steel connections is the brittle fracture at the end of the beam member in common with general mild steel connections. In the cases of mild steel connections, it has be developed that special moment frame connection details by reinforcing structural member or improvement of welding access hole. But, it is incomplete at yet about applicability estimation of high-strength steel connections. This study is the initial step research for the applicability estimation of beam-to-column connections being applied to developed high-strength steel, HSA800. And, it studied about structural performance of the high-strength steel connections according to the details of welding access hole through full-scale test and analytical method.

  • In thtx design of ductile moment -1csist1ng frnmcls (DMRFs) f'ollow~ng the. stlong columnweakbeam design philosophy, it is desirable that the joint and column remain essentiallyelastic in order to insure proper energy dissipation and lateral stability of the structure.Thv joint has been identifid as the "weak link: in DMRFs because any stiffness orstrength deterioration in this region can lead to substantial drifts and the possibility ofcollapse due to t'-delta effects. h3oreove1.. the tngintw is faced with the difficult task ofdetailing an element whose size is determined by theframing members, but \vhich mustresist a set of loads very different from those used in the design of the beams and columns.Four 3 -scale beam-column-slab joint assemblies were designed according to existing cod\ulcornerrequirements of' ACI 318-89. representing perimeter joints of DMRFs with reinforced highstrength concrete. • Recent advances of technology in materials science have made it easy to respond to user's needs on high performance steel in civil and building structures. The high-performance and high-strength steel are required for large scale structure and high-rise building to have high-strength, high fracture toughness and better weldability etc. Therefore development of 600MPa class steel for mega structure is necessary. high strength steels, however, may have mechanical properties that are significantly different from those of the conventional steels. The application of high-strength steels to building structures should be reviewed as to whether inelastic behavior equivalent to that of conventional steels can be attained or not. This study researched the structural behavior of high strength circular tubes compression and under flexure. Three column tests and three flexural tests were carried out. The suitability of existing design formulae(KBC 2009) and the structural behavior were investigated through these columns and beams with various types.

  • The structural provisions of rectangular CFT (concrete-filled tubular) columns in the 2005/2010 AISC Specification, ACI 318-08, and EC4 were comparatively analyzed as a preliminary study for establishing the unified standards for composite structures. The provisions analyzed included those related to the nominal strength, the effect of confinement, plate slenderness, effective flexural stiffness, and the material strength limitations. Small or large difference can be found among the provisions of AISC, ACI, and EC4. Generally, the 2010 AISC Specification provides the revised provisions which reflect up-to-date test results and tries to minimize the conflict with the ACI provisions. For example, the 2010 AISC Specification introduced a more finely divided plate slenderness limits for CFT columns. In seismic applications, the plate slenderness limits required for highly and moderately ductile CFT columns were separately defined. However, the upper cap limitations on material strengths in both the AISC and EC4 provisions are too restrictive and need to be relaxed considering the high-strength material test database currently available. This study found that no provisions reviewed in this paper provide a generally satisfactory method for predicting the P-M interaction strength of CFT columns under various material combinations. It is also emphasized that a practical constitutive model, which can reasonably reflect the stress-strain characteristics of confined concrete of rectangular CFT columns, is urgently needed for a reliable prediction of the P-M interaction strength.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse reinforcement in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns(260$\times$260$\times$1200 mm) were tested. Effects of main variables such as the concrete compressive strength, the tie configuration, the transverse reinforcement ratio, the tie spacing, and the spatting of the concrete cover were considered. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse reinforcement that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure There is a consistent decrease in deformability of column specimen with increasing concrete strength. Test results were compared with the previous confinement model such as modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi model. The comparison indicates that many previous models for confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.

  • Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFT) system is advantageous because it increases the load-carrying capacity without increasing the size of column. However CFT system has many benefits, it is not applied to field generally because of its heavyweight and difficulty of concrete filling method. As a solution to these problems, we proposed concrete filled steel tube column with hollow made by factory-manufactured PC method. The hollow concrete filled steel tube system is expected to obtain the high strength and high capacity of deformation despite it is a lightweight. This study deals with mechanical properties, strength and deformation, of hollow concrete filled steel tube subjected to axial load. 9 specimens were tested to examine mechanical properties closely, and the following results were obtained: All specimens basically showed higher initial rigidity and maximum strength with increased concrete filling rate. And most specimens showed almost linear behavior until around 80% of maximum strength regardless of filling rate, it is estimated that the elastic range is up to a half of the maximum strength which is the yield strength level.

  • The objective of this experimental study is to find the allowable level of axial load to give the proper flexural ductility according to the yield strength of lateral ties, and the distribution and amount of longitudinal bars used in confined high-strength concrete columns. Twelve concrete columns with a 20 cm square section and 80 cm high were tested under hi-axial loads. It was observed that the ductility tends to be improved at the axial loads not less than 0.4f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. The utilization of high-strength ties in accordance with the ACI 318-99 can cause the brittle failure due to the wide tie spacing. Under the high level of axial loads not less than 0.4f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. it is necessary for the buckling prevention of the longitudinal bars and the proper ductility improvement to use the high-strength ties with the consideration of the volumetric ratio and confinement type of the lateral ties, and the distribution of the longitudinal bars.
