Flash memory is non-volatile and can retain data even after system is powered off. Besides, it has many other features such as fast access speed, low power consumption, attractive shock resistance, small size, and light-weight. As its price decreases and capacity increases, the flash memory is expected to be widely used in consumer electronics, embedded systems, and mobile devices. Flash storage systems generally adopt a software layer, called FTL. In this research, we proposed a new FTL mechanism for overcoming the major drawback of conventional block mapping algorithm. In addition to the block mapping table, a index block mapping table with a small size is used to indicate sector location. The proposed indexed block mapping algorithm by adding a small size. By the simulation result, the proposed FTL provides an enhanced speed than a conventional hybrid mapping algorithm by around 45% in average, and the requirement of mapping memory is also reduced by around 12%.
NAND Flash memory has been growing popular storage device for the last years because of its low power consumption, fast access speed, shock resistance and light weight properties. However, it has the distinct characteristics such as erase-before-write architecture, asymmetric read/write/erase speed, and the limitation on the number of erasure per block. Due to these limitations, various Flash Translation Layers (FTLs) have been proposed to effectively use NAND flash memory. The systems that adopted the conventional FTL may result in severe performance degradation by the hot data which are frequently requested data for overwrite in the same logical address. In this paper, we propose a novel FTL algorithm called Adaptive Flash Translation Layer (AFTL) which uses sector mapping method for hot data and log-based block mapping method for cold data. Our system removes the redundant write operations and the erase operations by the separating hot data from cold data. Moreover, the read performance is enhanced according to sector translation that tends to use a few read operations. A series of experiments was organized to inspect the performance of the proposed method, and they show very impressive results.

Recently, Mobile Computing Devices are used generally. And Information which is processed by Mobile computing devices is increasing. Because information is digitalizing. So Mobile computing Devices demand an Embedded DBMS for efficient management of information. Moreover Mobile computing Devices demand an efficient storage management in NAND-type flash memory because the NAND-type flash memory is using generally in Mobile computing devices and the NAND-type flash memory is more expensive than the magnetic disks. So that in this paper, we present an efficient Compressed Data Management System for the embedded DBMS that is used in flash memory. This proposed system improve the space utilization and extend a lifetime of a flash memory because it decreases the size of data.
Flash memory has been widely used as an important storage device for consumer electronics. For the flash memory-based storage systems, FTL (Flash Translation Layer) is used to handle the mapping between a logical page address and a physical page address. Especially, log buffer-based FTLs provide a good performance with small-sized mapping information. In designing the log buffer-based FTL, one important factor is to determine the mapping structure between data blocks and log blocks, called associativity. While previous works use static associativity fixed at the design time, we propose a new log block mapping scheme which adjusts associativity based on the run-time workload. Our proposed scheme improves the I/O performance about 5~16% compared to the static scheme by adjusting the associativity to provide the best performance.
The virtualization layer is executed in higher authority layer than kernel layer and suitable for monitoring operating systems. However, existing virtualization monitoring systems provide simple information about the usage rate of CPU or memory. In this paper, the monitoring system using full virtualization technique is proposed, which can monitor virtual machine's dynamic kernel object as memory, register, GDT, IDT and system call table. To verify the monitoring system, the proposed system was implemented based on KVM(Kernel-based Virtual Machine) with full virtualization that is directly applied to linux kernel without any modification. The proposed system consists of KvmAccess module to access KVM's internal object and API to provide other external modules with monitoring result. In experiments, the CPU utilization for monitoring operations in the proposed monitering system is 0.35% when the system is monitored with 1-second period. The proposed monitoring system has a little performance degradation.
Flash memory based SSDs are currently being considered as a promising candidate for replacing hard disks due to several superior features such as shorter access time, lower power consumption and better shock resistance. However, SSDs have different characteristics from hard disk such as difference of unit and time for read, write and erase operation and impossibility for over-writing. Because of these reasons, SSDs have disadvantages on hard disk based systems, so FTL(Flash Translation Layer) is designed to increase SSDs' efficiency. In this paper, we propose an advanced logical address mapping method for increasing SSDs' performance, which is named HAMM(Hybrid Address Mapping Method). HAMM addresses drawbacks of previous block-mapping method and super-block-mapping method and takes advantages of them. We experimented our method on our own SSDs simulator. In the experiments, we confirmed that HAMM uses storage area more efficiently than super-block-mapping method, given the same buffer size. In addition, HAMM used smaller memory than block-mapping method to construct mapping table, demonstrating almost same performance.
We propose an adaptive garbage collection technique for hybrid flash memory which has both SLC and MLC. Since SLC area is fast and MLC area has low cost, the proposed scheme utilizes the SLC area as log buffer and the MLC area as data block. Considering the high write cost of MLC flash, the garbage collection for the SLC log buffer moves a page into the MLC data block only when the page is cold or the page migration invokes a small cost. The other pages are moved within the SLC log buffer. Also it adjusts the parameter values which determine the operation of garbage collection adaptively considering I/O pattern. From the experiments, we can know that the proposed scheme provides better performance compared with the previous flash management schemes for the hybrid flash and finds the parameter values of garbage collection close to the optimal values.

One of the major goals in high school Informatics is for students to develop creative problem-solving abilities based on knowledge on computer science. Thus, the contents of the textbooks should be accurate and appropriate. However, we discovered that the current Informatics textbooks contain the untrue and/or inappropriate descriptions of main memory and virtual memory. The textbooks describe that main memory is composed of RAM and ROM. The virtual memory is described as a technique in which a part of the secondary storage is utilized as main memory to execute an application of which size is larger than that of main memory. In this study, we attempted to uncover the root causes of the fallacies, and suggest the accurate explanations by comparing with renowned books adopted in most schools worldwide including USA. Our study reveals that it is inappropriate to include ROM in main memory from the memory hierarchy perspective. Virtual memory is a technique that provides convenience to programmers, through which an operating system loads the necessary portion of a program from secondary storage to main memory. As for the advantages of virtual memory in the current computer systems, the focus should be on providing the effective multitasking capability, rather than on executing a larger program than the size of main memory. We suggest that it is appropriate to exclude virtual memory in textbooks considering its complexity.
Recently, interest in location-based service (LBS) which utilizes a DBMS in mobile system environment has been increasing, and it is expected to overcome the existing file-based system's limitation in advanced in-vehicle system by utilizing DBMS's advantages such as efficient storage, transaction management, modelling and spatial queries etc. In particular, the road network data corresponds to the most essential domain in a route planning system, which needs efficient management and maintenance. Accordingly, this study aims to develop an efficient graph-based geodata model for topological network data and to support dynamic path computation algorithm based on heuristic approach in mobile LBS system. To achieve this goal, we design a data model for supporting the hierarchy of network, and implement a path planning system to evaluate its performance in mobile LBS system. Last but not least, we find out that the designed path computation algorithm with hierarchical graph model reduced the number of nodes used for finding and improved the efficiency of memory.
