  • When constructing on soft ground, managing ground settlement and safety is crucial. However, there often exists a significant disparity between the actual behavior of the ground and the design plans. In this study, we aimed to compare and analyze the difference between the predicted settlement based on theoretical formulas and the measured settlement during construction, in order to predict settlement. For this purpose, we analyzed settlement data from 18 construction sites. The results indicated that the back analysis settlement values were similar to the measured settlement values, whereas the design settlement values were significantly higher compared to the measured settlement values. Specifically, the design settlement values were 1.2 to 1.4 times higher than those derived from back analysis using measured values. The RMSE analysis revealed a value of 0.6212m for the design settlement and 0.1697m for the back analysis settlement. The difference between the back analysis settlement and the measured settlement was more than 70% lower than the difference between the design settlement and the measured settlement. This indicates that the back analysis settlement values exhibit lower error rates compared to the design settlement values.

  • There are many large-scale coastal region landfill and land development by loading to use territory efficiently, this regions are mostly soft clay ground. Constructing structures and road on the soft ground bring about engineering problems like ground shear fracture and a big amount of consolidation by bearing capacity. Improvement of soft soil is required to secure soil strength and settlement control. In improvement of soft soil, predict for the amount of settlement based on field surveyed reports are important element for estimating pre-loading banking height and the final point of consolidation. In this study, there is calculating theoretical settlement by analyzing field surveyed report and ground investigation to improvement of soft soil with pre-loading and vertical drain method. And present settlement prediction method reflect soil characteristics in Gimpo Hangang site by analysing prediction settlement and observational settlement during compaction using hyperbolic, ${\sqrt{s}}$, Asaoka method.

  • Instruments are installed in soft ground improvement projects to manage economic and safe construction. When analyzing data, the amount of settlement data over time can be used to understand the overall ground settlement behavior, but it is difficult to analyze the interrelatedness between measurement points. Therefore, to analyze the relative compressive settlement behavior between measurement points, the settlement amount and velocity were processed and defined as the mean settlement difference index (ASi,j) and the slope difference index (SDIi,j). Plotted in the mean settlement difference index - slope difference index (ASi,j-SDIi,j) coordinate system. As a result of the analysis of the relative compaction subsidence behavior between the measuring points, the relationship between the measuring points in the average subsidence difference index - slope difference index coordinate system moved to area 1 as the compaction was completed. By continuously plotting the movement path of the observation point in the corresponding coordinate system, the relative settlement behavior between the measurement points was analyzed, and it was possible to check whether the settlement behavior of the two measurement points was stable or unstable depending on the direction of the path.

  • To effectively improve soft soils, it is necessary to perform ground behavior characteristics and stability management through measurement activities when embankment of structures on soft soils is conducted. However, there are many differences between the actual ground behavior and the initial design plan. To address this issue, this study analyzed the measured settlement in the Yeongam-Haenam areas using the Hyperbolic method to predict the settlement based on the measurement data. From the completion time of the embankment in the target area, the final settlement was predicted through the change in the degree of consolidation by the measurement period. Furthermore, the final settlement according to the change in degree of consolidation was compared and analyzed through finite element analysis and field measurement.

  • In the present study, the prediction methods of the crest settlement after impounding and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction were proposed through the analysis on settlement data at 38 monitored points of 36 Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dams (CFRDs). The results from this analysis provided that the crest settlement and the maximum internal settlement are increased in proportion to the dam height and the void ratio. However, the relationship between internal settlement and dam height for each void-ratio range plotted in semi-logarithmic scale is the nearly same. Also, the prediction of the crest settlement of the CFRD is possible through the maximum internal settlement during dam construction. In addition, it seems that the valley shape highly affects the dense dam body with high construction modulus. The results of this study will provide the useful tool for the design, construction and management of CFRDs.

  • In this study, the prediction methods for the crest settlement after impounding and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction were proposed through the analysis on settlement data at 46 monitored points of 37 Center-Cored Rockfill Dams (CCRDs). Results from this analysis provided that the crest settlement increases with elapsed time, and from the relationship between the dam height and the maximum internal settlement during dam construction, it is confirmed that the internal settlement was largely evaluated when the coarse-grained material was used as the dam core. This internal settlement increased in proportion to the dam height. In addition, the crest settlement of the CCRD with the core compacted with fine-grained material was relatively large. It is expected that the results of this study would provide the practical tool for the design, construction and management of CCRDs.

  • Predicting the settlement of soft ground is an important aspect of soft ground design. In this study, a method is proposed that increases the reliability of settlement predictions based on-site investigation data, including piezocone penetration test results, at the Gimhae-Jinyoung district, adjacent area to the Nakdong River. Soils in the area waweres classified using the Robertson Chart (1986, 1990), and theoretical settlement was calculated using the equations proposed by Terzaghi (1925) and Sanglerat (1972). SPSS was used to obtain the correlation between theoretical and measured settlements. Results produced settlement prediction errors for the Terzaghi and Sanglerat methods of 17.28% and 26.96%, respectively. A correction factor calculated by SPSS correlation analysis for the relation between and theoretical and measured settlements is proposed that improves the reliability of settlement prediction in soils of the classification examined.

  • Predictions of settlements under preloading for the improvement of soft soil is a very important element of construction management. Due to the non uniformity, difficulty of estimating resonable soil properties, predictions of settlements and settlement velocities at the design stage seldom agree with the actual future settlements. To overcome this problem, the prediction methods based on the settlement observation of initial preloading stage such as hyperbolic method and Asaoka method have been employed frequently. However the estimating method for the reliability of these predictions at the time of prediction has not been suggested. In this study, comparisons of predicted settlements by hyperbolic met hed and observed settlements are explored through case studies. And a stratagem of estimating reliability of settlement predictions by hyperbolic method is suggested as the result of investigation on the relationship between the initial observed time and error of settlement prediction by hyperbolic method.

  • Settlement prediction based on field monitored data, which is used to control subsequent surcharges, is very important in construction management for soft ground improvement with the preloading method. Observational settlement prediction methods, which are suggested for an instantaneous loading, have been widely used in fields. However, they have difficulties in the settlement prediction with subsequent surcharge change. In this paper, a simple method to predict the settlement with subsequent surcharge change is suggested. The suggested method adopts assumptions to simplify the complex field condition and utilizes observational methods. The suggested method is applied to a large consolidation test result, FDM analysis results, and field monitored settlement data to confirm its practicability. From the applications, the suggested method produces reasonable prediction results with various subsequent surcharge changes.
