  • Zooplankton was sampled vertically with a Norpac net from Gamag Bay in April, July, September and December, 2001. Copepods were predominant in April and December, and cladocerans in July and Noctituca scintillans in September, respectively. There are high spatio-temporal fluctuations in the abundance of zooplankton with a range of 22-17,197 indiv.$m^3$. In the copepod community, neritic species, Eurytemora pacifica, Acartia omorii, Centropages abdominalis and Calanus sinicus were predominant in April ; Labidocera rotunda and A. erythraea in July; A. erythraea and Paracalanus parvus s. 1. in September; A. omorii and E. pacifica in December. However, oceanic species Eucalanus sp. and Neocalanus sp. were abundant in September. It indicates that although Gamag Bay is semi-closed, the distribution pattern of zooplankton is seasonally strongly affected by oceanic waters in addition to neritic ones.

  • Seasonal distribution of zooplankton community in Inchon Dock, an artificially closed marine embayment has been studied. Samples were collected monthly during the period from December 1989 to December 1991 at four stations in the dock and compared with that at a single station in neighbouring waters of the Yellow Sea. Copepods dominated both in and outside of the dock all the year round, except in late autumn and early winter when protozoans outnumbered. dominant species were Oithona davisae, Acartia bifilosa, Paracalanus crassirostris, Noctiluca scintillas and Tintinnopsis tubulosa. A sharp decline in the abundance was observed in summer 1990 in the dock apparently due to oxygen deficiency (anoxic condition). Although no distinct deference in the abundance of zooplankton was observed between populations in and outside of the dock except in summer 1990, waters out of the dock showed to have a prosperity in species number throughout the year. Moreover, four species of copepods, Centropages abdominalis, Pseudodiaptomus marinus, Tortanus forcipatus and T. spinicaudatus occurred solely at the outside of the dock.

  • Temporal and spatial variations of surface water temperature in Jinju Bay for the period of 2010~2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 17 stations in the south coast of Korea. Water temperature shows the maximum late in January and the minimum early in August. Seasonal variation of water temperatures at the north part of the bay is smaller than the middle and the south. In summer, the lowest and the highest of maximum water temperature are distributed around Jijok Channel which is located at the south of the bay. The fluctuations of water temperatures at Noryang and Daebang Channel are smaller than others because of vertical mixing caused by passage of strong tidal currents. Wind and strong currents affect on the stratification of the surface water layer near Daebang Channel. High temperatures come in frequently around the north area when eastward constant flows appear at neap tide as blowing westerly in the springtime at Noryang Channel. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at 7~20 day periods at Noryang Channel, 7~20 day and semidiurnal at the west coast of Changsun Island and Jijok Channel and 7~20 day and diurnal at the middle of the bay. Temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel shows high coherence and has leading phase with those at other stations in the bay. However, the phase of temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel falls behind that at Daebang Channel. Daebang Channel has an influence on the temperature fluctuation only at the west and middle part of the bay. Cross-correlation analyses for the temperature fluctuation show that Jinju Bay could be classified into six areas; Noryang Channel, the area of convergence and divergence at the north, Daebang Channel, the west coast of Changsun Island, the mixing area at the middle of the bay and the south inside of the bay, respectively.

  • To understand the variation and transport pattern of suspended matters, salinity, tidal current and suspended matters in semiclosed Muan Bay have been monitored during winter and summer. The suspended matters show considerably seasonal variations with low concentration and homogeneity in the water column during winter season, but with high concentration and layering during summer season. Particularly, during summer season, the freshwater and the suspended matters influxed by the gate operation of the Youngsan River sea-dike are transported northward in accordance with the would flow into the inner-bay by relaxed flood currents after the construction of sea-dike and sea-walls in the Mokpo coastal zone. But, in the south bay-mouth, those matters outflow through the bay-mouth, resulting from tidal ebb dominance and asymmetry in the west bay-mouth. The residual suspended matter flux is much higher in the south bay-mouth(-0.0955kg/m ${\cdot}$ sec) than that of west bay-mouth(0.0078kg1m ${\cdot}$ sec). Accordingly, The Muan Bay is interpreted as erosion-dominated environments, and the erosion somewhat progresses in the intertidal flat of the bay.

  • Four in situ incubation experiments were conducted in May, August and November 2009, as well as February 2010 to determine the seasonal primary productivity and the community structure of phytoplankton at the Seomjin estuary. The primary production of phytoplankton ranged from 9 to 3560 mgC $m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$. Primary productivity was the highest in the summer season (August), which was influenced by improved optical and temperature conditions of the water, as well as the supply of nutrients derived from its surrounding watershed. Particularly, the upper station (SJ-1, SJ-2) of Seom-jin estuary showed a higher productivity, as a result of inflow of input nutrients originated from the terrestrial source. The fucoxanthin, as an index pigment of diatoms showed the highest concentration (0.74~9.51 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) at all stations, occupying 30~80% to total Chl a concentrations. The phytoplankton species composition determination, using a microscope showed similar results to the pigment analysis, which indicated diatom Skeletonema costatum, as the dominant species. The primary productivity in Seom-jin estuary indicates temporally and spatially large variation, according to different environmental conditions. Also, Skeletonema costatum has euryhaline features with relatively higher contribution.

  • In this paper, efficient and reliable methodologies for conducting sea trials to evaluate the performance of hull-mounted sonar systems is discussed. These systems undergo performance verification during ship construction via sea trials. However, the evaluation procedures often lack detailed consideration of variabilities in detection performance due to seabed topography, seasonal factors. To resolve this issue, temperature and salinity structure data were collected from 1967 to 2022 using ARGO floats and ocean observers data. The paper proposes an efficient and reliable sea trial method incorporating Bellhop modeling. Furthermore, a machine learning model applying a Physics-Informed Neural Networks was developed using the acquired data. This model predicts the sound speed profile at specific points within the sea trial area, reflecting seasonal elements of performance evaluation. In this study, we predicted the seasonal variations in sound speed structure during sea trial operations at a specific location within the trial area. We then proposed a strategy to account for the variability in detection performance caused by seasonal factors, using results from Bellhop modeling.

  • This study focused on variability of the sea water temperatures observed off the Dangjin Power Plant in the central west coast of Korea for the period of 1998-1999. Spatial averaged temperature shows the annual range of $20.3^{\circ}C$, with minimum of $3.3^{\circ}C$ in February and maximum of $23.6^{\circ}C$ in August. Horizontal distribution patterns are seasonally reversing: The temperatures are increasing toward inshore of the period of April to October, while they are increasing toward of offshore for the rest of year. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at M2 and S2 tidal periods, since the water movement in the study area is influenced by strong tide. The responses of temperature variations to tidal phase show different seasonal characteristics: The temperatures are increasing at flood phases in winter and ebb phases in summer. Amplitudes of the components at M2 and S2 periods are $0.8^{\circ}C\;and\;0.5^{\circ}C$, accounting for 70-80% of daily variation. Coherency analyses between non-tidal components of temperature and wind speed show that in summer, northerly wind components significantly coherent with temperature at 2.8 days period, while in winter, southerly wind component is coherent with 2.4 days period, with 0.6 and 0.7 day phase-lags, respectively.

  • This study analyzes the variability of Korean summer rainfall associated with the tropical low-frequency oscillation using long-term observation data. From the EOF analysis, the first mode showed opposite phase between the South and the North Korea with the regime shift in rainfall variability since the mid-1990s. The summer precipitation over South Korea tends to increase in southern part during strong El Ni$\tilde{n}$o where the warm sea surface temperature extends to far eastern tropical Pacific. In weak La Ni$\tilde{n}$a, the increased precipitation directly influences from the western tropical Pacific to the mid-latitude. In June, the rainfall over South Korea is positively correlated with the Indian Summer Monsoon while in July, it is negatively correlated with the Western North Pacific Summer Monsoon. In August, highly negative correlation between the rainfall over South Korea and the Indian Summer Monsoon is found.

  • Water quality of Masan-Jinhae Bay was monitored from January 1996 to August 1997. The monitoring focused on the spatial and vertical gradients and seasonal changes of eutrophication parameters such as nutrients, DO and water transparency. Flagellate phytoplanktons persistently bloomed from April to October with monospecific or mixed algal blooms and dynamic algal successions were observed in this area. Algal blooms were highly correlated with salinity drops and made the water less transparent. Stratification of oxygen content was persistent through summer and oligo-oxygenation was developed in the bottom waters. Nutrient gradients were consistently maintained through the depth in summer and through spatial distribution from inner Masan Bay to outer Jinhae Bay in winter. Except the rainfall seasons, water quality was under the influence of the waste waters discharged from watershed around the Masan Bay. The waste waters would act as the primary factor for the water quality deterioration of the bay. Literature data for eutrophication were gathered and analyzed to review the water quality trends of the Masan and Jinhae bays since 1970. Annual mean COD and phosphate concentration consistently increased from 1975 to 1990 and decreased or dropped after 1991. The sediment of inner part of Masan Bay was dredged from 1991 to 1994 as a decontamination process and it is assumed that the dredging has weakened more or less the deterioration trend of the water quality of the bay.
