  • Using a vertical composting system in layer farms, the composting process was characterized in terms of temperature variation, change of moisture contents, fertilizer ingredient and so on. In this study, two types of layer farms were examined. The layer manure was produced as 3,300 and 116,650 kg/day for Farm A and Farm B, respectively. Also, their average moisture contents were 74.4% (Farm A) and 65.6 % (Farm B). The inside temperature of composting in Farm A was varied in the range of 50 to $70^{\circ}C$, and moisture content of it decreased from 59.5% to 20.6% at the edge of vertical composting system. While in Farm B, composting temperature was fluctuated between 50 and $65^{\circ}C$ and moisture content declined from 34.0% to 13.4% at the end of vertical composting system. The fertilizer ingredients such as T-N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ were not significantly influenced by seasonal effect. Their values were changed in the range of 0.90% to 0.47% for T-N, 0.16% to 0.42% for $P_2O_5$, and 0.22% to 0.28 for $K_2O$, respectively. Also, OM/N ratio was varied from 36.8 to 84.4.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the effects of loess ($0\%$, $1.5\%$, $3\%$ and $5\%$) on the growth performance, meat quality, and blood composition of broiler chicks. A total of 320 broiler chicks at 1 day of age were divided into 4 groups to feed basal diet (control) and basal diet plus $1.5\%$ to $5.0\%$ loess respectively for 6 weeks. The body weight gain and feed conversion rate were not significantly different among the groups. The contents of moisture and crude fat of meats were significantly different in treatments when compared to that of the control group (P<0.05), but did not show any differences among the groups. The pH values of meats were not different among the treatments. However, water holding capacity was higher in all treated groups than the control. The L of meat color was also increased in all treated groups, but a and b of meat color were not different among the groups. In addition, the contents of unsaturated fatty acid content of meat were higher in the treated groups than the control. The concentrations of HDL cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly lower in all treated groups than the control (P<0.05). Finally, the contents of moisture of excreta were significantly lower in all treated groups than control (P<0.05). Taken together, it was concluded that loess did not improved the growth performance, but had effects on the improvement of meat quality.

  • In order to investigate the emission pattern of sulphur dioxide gas from the soils in the plastic film house, the amounts of sulphur dioxide gas emitted from soils was periodically measured either in the plastic film house condition or in the incubator where the interior temperature was controlled to 10, 20. 30 and $40^{\circ}C$. Each soil was mixed with either mushroom, poultry, pig or fish meal compost at the rate of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50g/kg for individual treatment and then treated with addition of 50, 100, 150 and 200ml of water. A significant increase in the emission of sulphur dioxide gas was observed in the treatment of fish meal compost and such increase was initiated from the rate of l0g/kg, while little difference was observed in other treatments. Compared to upland soils, as control, the horticultural soils containing higher sulphur content emitted more sulphur dioxide. The emission of sulphur dioxide was favoured as temperature increased and was highest with the addition of 150ml of water.

  • The microflora changes of 10 water-controled treatments combined with livestock manures(pig, chicken) and bulking agents(sawdust, paper sludge) were investigated. The B/F values of the P-1 and C-1(65%, $H_2O$) treatments were 3571 and 5400 respectively, but those of the P-4 and C-4(50%, $H_2O$) treatments showed very low values, 667 and 334, respectively. The B/F values tended to increase with higher water content of the treatments. In the composting processes, the successions of microflora, adapting the compost environments, took place via fluctuating temperature. In the high temperature period, the numbers of mesophilic bacteria and fungi decreased, but that of the spore forming bacteria increased. However, the number of mesophilic bacteria inereased during the cold period. The B/F values of compost ranged 25-300, which indicates a decrease in the quantity of bacteria. The time required for the temperature of compost to reach $60^{\circ}C$ showed different patterns. There was no pathogenic microorganism in the treatments which reached a high temperature in a short period of time, but, in the treatments which reached a high temperature over a Long period of time, the pathgenic microorganism was not still alive.

  • The material compressions in the vertical composting reactor affect to the biodegradation rates of the organic wastes. This study investigated the variations of physical properties of the composting materials according to the height of reactor due to affect to the settlement in the vertical composting reactor. The variations of decreased temperature after peak temperature showed the different patterns depending on the reactor heights. The variation width of re-increased temperature after peak temperature was reduced as the mixing operations were increased, and increased as the height of reactor elevated. The moisture content and the variation width of the moisture content were increased higher as the height of the reactor became higher. The variations of the bulk density at each height of vertical reactor showed the same tendency comparing with those of the moisture content. The relationship between bulk density and moisture content had shown the quadratic equation (r2=0.94). The dry solid contents at each reactor height were decreased as the height of reactor were increased. The results of the variation of the physical properties during the composting process were caused by the downward compression of the material into the reactor. Settlement rate in the vertical composting reactor was estimated about 2.184cm/day. To increase the biodegradation efficiency in the vertical reactor, the conditions of air path in the composting material matrix have to be investigated afterwards.

  • This study was conducted to find out the optimal aeration rates for minimizing odor emission and for increasing biological activities during composting of livestock manure in the enclosed bench-scale reactor system. It was treated with the mixture of poultry manure and sawdust controlled the initial water content of 60%, then aerated continuously at four different aeration rates (0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids). The average emitted concentration of ammonia in 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids during composting reached the level of 40% in comparison with that of 0.2 L/min/kg dry-solids. In cases of sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, methylmercaptan and ethylmercaptan, their concentrations decreased with increasing aeration rates and the emission time was shortened. But they didn't detect in the treatment of 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids. The biological activity for composting showed a trend of increasing as aeration rates increased. The treatment of 0.6 L/min/kg dry-solids gave the highest biological activity and the best compost quality.
