  • In this work, the diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and modified polyurethane (PU) blends were initiated by N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH). The cure and fracture toughness of neat DGEBA with the addition of PU were investigated. The cure properties of DGEBA/PU blend system were examined by DSC and near-IR measurements. The fracture touhtness were investigated by measuring the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and the critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$). According to the results, the maximum values of owe activation energy ($E_a$) and conversion (${\alpha}$) were found at 10 phr of PU. Also the $K_{IC}$ showed a similar behavior with the results of conversion. These results were probably due to increase of crosslinking density in the blends resulted from increase of the hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl groups of DGEBA and isocyanate groups of PU.

  • Morphological changes of unsaturated polyester/polyvinylacetate semi-IPN were studied while the phase separation and the cure reaction occurred in a competing fashion. The light scattering and thermal analysis techniques were used to investigate the phase separation rates and mechanical properties resultantly induced by molecular diffusion of thermoplastic polymer during the curing process of thermosetting polymer. The reaction activation energy was calculated by using Flynn-Wall method and the semi-IPN structure exhibited various phase-separation morphological characteristics. When PVAc composition was 10 wt%, the phase separation was not observed during the curing reaction, but the phase separation occurred in a similar fashion to nucleation and growth(NG) mechanism at room temperature. On the other hand, when PVAc composition was over 11.65 wt%, the phase separation was generated in the middle of the curing process. Consequently, the phase separation seemed to influence the curing reaction rate, which was also supported by the changing activation energy with conversion and PVAc composition. Finally, the total scattered intensity was measured at various temperature, and subsequently the diffusion rates of phase separation R(${\beta}m$) were evaluated.

  • The aim of this study is to provide the stress-strain behavior of hardening geological materials such as rock or concrete on three dimensional spaces by using Desai model based on plastic theory. To validate proposed model, truly triaxial tests with high pressure under variety of stress paths in which three principal stresses were controlled independently using concrete materials were performed. The main results are summerized as follows: 1. Various stress paths for hardening materials used are satisfactorily explained by performing the truly triaxial test with high pressure. This is very important to investigate constitutive equations for materials like rock or concrete. 2. Since the proposed yield function is continuous, it avoids the singularity point at the intersection of two function in the previous models, thus, reducing the difficulties for computer implementation. 3. Analytic predictions for yielding behavior on $J_1-{\sqrt{J_{2D}}}$ octahedral and triaxial plane, as well as volumetric strain and stress-strain behavior agree well with experimental results.

  • The roll coating process is well-known for completely replacement coating system with an existing wet paint process for automotive which has low productivity and is not environment-friendly process. It is very important to evaluate the curing behavior, corrosion resistance and processing property as well as rheological behavior in order to realize a film flexibility and hardness simultaneously. In this study, we have synthesized the polyester resin modified with hydroxyl values and molecular weight to apply the pre-painted system, and then evaluated the curing behavior, deep drawing, tensile strength and rheological properties. It was observed that N-0375-40 of 40 (mg KOH/mol) hydroxyl values showed the most suitable for flexibility, film hardness, and curing behavior.

  • In this research, we studied curing and filler systems for preparation of fast cure SMC and low-density SMC, respectivly. Two curing systems were evaluated for fast cure SMC formulation. One is a mixed initiator system and the other is an activator system. For low-density SMC, glass micro-baloon(GMB) was used as a filler. Various SMC formulations were cured in an appropriate way, and their curing behavior and physical/mechanical properties were characterized. Curing rates were increased with increasing quantity of mixed initiator and activator, but mechanical properties were not affected. As the quantities of GMB increased, density and mechanical properties were decreased.

  • The cure and rheological behavior of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F/nadic methyl anhydride resin system with the kinds of imidazole were studied using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a rotational rheometer. The isothermal traces were employed to analyze cure reaction. The DGEBF/ anhydride conversion profiles showed autocatalyzed reaction characterized by maximum conversion rate at $20{\sim}40 %$ of the reaction. The rate constants ($k_1,\;k_2$) showed temperature dependance, but reaction order did not. The reaction order (m+n) was calculated to be close to 3. There are two reaction mechanisms with the kinds oi catalyst. The gel time was determined by using G'-G" crossover method, and the activation energy was obtained from this results. From measurement of rheological properties it was found that the logarithmic 1:elation time of fused silica filled DBEBF epoxy compounds linearly increased with the content of filler and decreased with temperature. The highly filled epoxy compounds showed typical pseudoplastic behavior, and the viscosity of those decreased with increasing maximum packing ratio.

  • The exothermic cure kinetics of epoxy resin was controlled by hardener containing fast and slow curing agents. The epoxy risen comprises hydrogenated bisphenol A-based epoxide (HBA), fast curing agent (FH) and slow curing agent poly(propyleneglycol)bis(2-aminopropylether) (SH). Talc was used as an inorganic additive. In the process of curing, cure kinetics along with temperature was monitored by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermocouple to show that the temperature increase was well controlled by adjusting the hardener mixture. Additionally, bending and tensile strengths of the epoxy/talc composites were also measured to be lower and higher with the amount of the talc inorganic additive, respectively. It is thus concluded that the increase in the temperature during exothermic curing reaction and mechanical properties of epoxy resins are tuned by optimizing hardener mixture for successful stone conservation.

  • Environmental friendly UV-curable coatings, having excellent hardness, gloss, mar and chemical resistance, are commonly used for the wooden flooring coatings. Especially epoxy acrylate oligomers are chosen for the wooden flooring coatings, due to their thermal stability and fast curing. In this study, we investigated the effect of the acrylate functionality on the thermal stability and surface hardness. The thermal degradations of monomers, oligomer, photoinitiator and formulated coatings with different acrylate functionality were measured using a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). And the surface hardness was also measured with a pendulum hardness tester to compare relationship between the thermal stability and the physical property. The cured coatings became thermally stable by crosslinking during UV-curing. Both the thermal stability and surface hardness of cured coatings were improved with increasing acrylate functionality.
