  • This paper estimates a matching function in Korea by using the method of Borowczyk-Martins et al. (2013) in order to mitigate endogeneity problems. The endogeneity was controlled through the GMM estimation by approximating the unobserved matching efficiency with the ARMA(p,q) process. The monthly data from the Economically Active Population Survey and Labor Force Survey at Establishments from June 2009 to December 2019 were used for the estimation. The matching elasticity that indicates the elasticity of new hires with respect to vacancies was estimated to be 0.859. When excluding 2019 samples, which had a large number of direct jobs provided by the government, the matching elasticity was lowered to 0.755, but still higher than that of other countries.

  • This paper examines the effects of COVID-19 on the working hours and wages by employment types of wage workers. Using the Economically Active Population Survey-Supplementary Survey by Employment Types(2017-2020), I found that due to COVID-19, non-regular workers reduced their working hours more than regular workers, shrinking their opportunities to generate wage income. During the same period, the working hours and wage gap between new regular and non-regular workers widened, this was largely in part-time and short-term workers. As the working conditions change based on the initial level, these results show that efforts to improve their(new and short term workers) working conditions can contribute to mitigating labor market inequality.

  • Objective : This study explores whether and how the amount of smoking differs by economic status and perception among the men in working age. Methods : The study utilized the 4th wave of KoWEPS containing the items on perception of economic conditions. Analysis was conducted on ever-married men aged 30-54, who have capacity to work. It used 2 stage regression model methods to examine the mediation effect of perception on economic status. Results : The results shows that the negative perception on economic status has a positive effect on smoking. Disposable income affects smoking only through the perception of economic status. Employment status exerts both direct and indirect effect on smoking. Conclusions : These findings imply that less privileged economic status is related to smoking through anxiety or stress for the negative perception on it.

  • This study was conducted to examine changes in coffee intake according to the sociodemographic characteristics of the people over 50 and the elderly living in Korea. The data of 2,316 and 3,170 people were extracted respectively from the 2001 and 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. The data were analyzed by gender, age, region area, marital status, educational level, household income, economic activity, and subjective health status. They were also analyzed according to gender and age by average daily intake of coffee, coffee type, place, cups of coffee a day and amount of coffee intake per serving. All statistical analyses were performed with IBM PASW Statistics (SPSS) 21.0 which is capable of complex sample design by frequency analysis, chi-square test, t-test, and logistic regression analysis. The results of the study showed that coffee consumption of the elderly was influenced by their economic activity. In 2011, elderly men ingested averagely more coffee than elderly women, and they also consumed brewed coffee mostly at workplace. Moreover, age groups of over 75 tended to consume a lot of brewed coffee. In this respect, the coffee industry should be aware of the elderly as a new consumption group. Also, this study provides a variety of coffee shops with basic data for product development and marketing activities.

  • This study investigates the effect of survey refusal and noncontact on the nonresponse error in the household survey. For this purpose we analyzed the data of the interviewer's field work report. The survey data quality is affected by nonresponse rate and nonresponse error, and also nonresponse rate measures the reliability of the survey data. The household survey mainly contains two types of nonresponses of refusals and noncontacts. These refusals and noncontacts have different effect on the nonresponse error. This could be a venue for future research interested in decreasing the error due to noncontacts and refusals.

  • This study explores the determinants of economic status and well-being among elderly Koreans. Particular emphasis is paid to the role of intergenerational support in these processes because institutional responses to an aging population in Korea are currently inadequate. Path model results indicate that status maintenance variables have significant effects on economic status and well-being as measured by comprehensive income. Further, inequality in comprehensive income - as measured by the Gini and Theil's indices - is substantial and increases in successive age groups. However, market-based and family-based income, two components of comprehensive income, show different patterns. Inequality in market-based income is apparently increasing, while inequality in family-based income is decreasing gradually in successive age groups. With respect to the role of intergenerational support, results indicate that family-income-focused persons possess highly vulnerable sociodemographic characteristics, and that for the socially disadvantaged elderly Koreans, intergenerational support plays a crucial role in the later stages of life. This study also discusses the implications of these findings for the transition from latency to manifestation of intergenerational support in Korea.

  • This study examined the factors affecting the underweight of Korean adolescents using data from Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey, which are national health statistics. This is a second data analysis study using the 13th Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey. The subjects were 48,242 adolescents who range from the first-year middle school students to the third-year high school students. The measurement variables were classified into demographic, physical activity, dietary, and mental health characteristics. The collected data were analyzed by logistic regression analysis. The factors affecting the underweight of Korean adolescents were sex, school type, academic performance, economic level, physical activities, weight control efforts, ramen intake, confectionary intake, stress, and subjective sleep fulfillment rate. Based on the results of this study, we need to search for the measures to help underweight adolescents recover their proper weight.
