  • The electroacupuncture according to Voll(EAV) is a method of combining the fundamentals of classical acupuncture with the facilities of modern electronics for diagnostics and therapy. Classical acupuncture uses energy conducting lines called 'meridians' and acupuncture points situated along them. Dr. Voll is considered the founder of 'EAV' since he succeeded not only in finding a method of exact electric localization and in explaining the interelation between the acupuncture points and their individual organs, but he also succeeded in measuring the resistance of these points and in explaining the diagnostic meaning of the measured values. In the course of his research, Voll found numerous new measurement points and energy conducting vessels unknown to classical acupuncture, but indispensible for diagnosis of human organic functions. As a basis of modern research in meridian theory, I tried to compare EAV measurement point with classical acupuncture point.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to find the desirable way for the acupuncture treatment of breast cancer. Methods : We reviewed several literatures about breast cancer. Based on the review, we analyzed the causes of breast cancer through meridian theory of oriental medicine and looked for the desirable ways to treat it. Results and Conclusions : The breast cancer results from the unbalance between reverting yin and lesser yang. Especially, exasperation of PC(pericardium meridian) seems to paly an important role, and accordingly, it is needed to activate GB(gall bladder meridian). Also, enhancing the function of HT(heart meridian) should be considered for the acupuncture treatment of breast cancer.

  • Objectives : In the meridian pathway system, 5 yang meridians excluding bladder meridian pass ST12. In this study, we tried to find out why 5 yang meridians pass ST12. Methods : 15 classics of acupuncture and moxibustion literature - 『Huangdimingtangjingjixiao』, 『Zhenjiujiayijing』, 『Huangdineijingtaisu』, 『Beijiqianjinyaofang』, 『Waitaimiyaofang』, 『Ishimpo』, 『Taipingshenghuifang』, 『Tongrenshuxue-zhenjiutujing』, 『Zhenjiuzishengjing』, 『Shisijingfahui』, 『Zhenjiujuying』, 『Yixuerumen』, 『Zhenjiudacheng』, 『Leijing』, and 『Leijingtuyi』- were reviewed and compared. Results : Five yang meridians passed ST12, and large intestine meridian and triple energizer meridian were closely related to ST12 in divergent channels. Stomach meridian and gall bladder meridian were related to ST12 in meridian muscles. ST12 was related to small intestine meridian in main cure effect. ST12 is in the best position to enter the body cavity. Conclusions : It can be seen that ST12 is closely related to all internal organs through the characteristics of stomach meridian. Therefore, it is thought that ST12's various characteristics largely explains a pathway to enter the body cavity in the hand and foot three yang meridians.

  • Objectives : Perceptual experiences have a causal relationship with reality. If there exists something corresponding to acupoints, there should be perceptual experiences for that something. The purpose of this study is to identify and to analyze the perceptual experiences for acupoints within 『LingShu·BenShu』. Methods : First, we briefly propose a perceptual anatomy in order to describe the perceived human body parts, and their perceived directions and places. Second, we analyze the ways of identifying acupoints in the original text of 『LingShu·BenShu』. Results : From 『LingShu·BenShu』, the procedures of identifying total 64 acupoints were recognized. It was clarified that they are by way of visual and haptic explorations in body regions and partial regions. Conclusions : Perceptual explorations for acupoints follow three major principles: of gradual narrowing down, of determination of direction or place, of relative distance. At the final stages, categories of form and location are encountered by observers. The forms have either concavities or convexities. They are determinate indicators of where acupoints are, while the locations are indetermanate. Haptic forms of acupoints are newly discovered from textual analysis with perceptual anatomy. These properties will shed new light both on study of acupoints and on study of meridians.

  • Objectives : Needle sickness is one of the adverse events of acupuncture, although substantial adverse effects during a routine acupuncture treatment seem to be highly unusual. In this work, we propose that an acupuncture-related vasovagal response resembles needle sickness during acupuncture therapy. Methods : In this article, we discussed the general characteristics of vasovagal syncope and went into more detail on vasovagal syncope in people who have a fear of blood injection and injury. We also offer a recommendation for the prevention and management of vasovagal syncope brought on by acupuncture. Results : The vasovagal reaction related to acupuncture is closely associated with needle sickness. The prevention can be done using PEACHES (position, experience, anxiety, constitution, hydration, environment, symptom recognition) principles. The management should be conducted using the RIPCORD (recognize, initiate, position, communicate, order treatments, reassess, document) techniques. Conclusions : It is important to comprehend the characteristics of needle sickness as a vasovagal reaction related to acupuncture. According to the recommendation, practitioners should effectively prevent and manage needle sickness.

  • Objectives : There are many variations in the ST36 acupoint location. The purpose of this article is to suggest a method of locating the ST36 acupoint. Methods : Based on the available research and the neuroanatomical characteristics of the underlying acupoint, we summarized the proper procedure for finding the ST36 acupoint. Results : ST36 is 3 B-cun inferior to ST35 and is vertically situated on the line that connects ST35 and ST41. The ST36 acupoint corresponds to the deep peroneal nerve, which is situated in the tibialis anterior muscle's back. The neurovascular bundles that are located on the interosseous membrane between the interosseous crests of the tibia and fibula include the deep peroneal nerve, anterior tibial artery, and anterior tibial vein. According to both classical and modern literature, this acupoint can be found horizontally between the two muscles, tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus. Conclusions : Based on a review of the literature and neuroanatomical features, we suggest that ST36 can be positioned horizontally between tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus. Additional imaging studies and clinical proof are required to determine ST36 acupoint.

  • Objectives : Source acupoint is one of the representative acupoints to treat various diseases in each meridian. We aimed to identify the patterns of selection of Source acupoints and their associations with diseases using clinical trials data. Methods : We extracted the frequency of Source acupoints across 30 diseases from clinical trials database. Acupuncture treatment regimens were retrieved from the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The frequency of Source acupoint use was calculated as the number of studies using a certain acupoint divided by the total number of included studies. Using hierarchical clustering and multidimensional scaling, the characteristics of Source acupoints were analyzed based on the similarity of the relationships between the Source acupoints and the diseases. Results : A total of 421 clinical trials were included for this analysis. LR3, HT7, KI3, and LI4 acupoints were most frequently used for the treatment of 30 diseases. Cluster analysis showed that LR3 and LI4 acupoints were grouped together and HT7 and KI3 acupoints were grouped together. Multidimensional scaling revealed that LR3, LI4, HT7, and KI3 acupoints have intrinsic properties in the two-dimensional space. Conclusions : The present study identified the selection patterns of the Source acupoints using clinical trials data. Our finding will provide the understanding of the characteristics of Source acupoints.
