By operating a focus group composed of the program participants, a qualitative analysis of the participant's evaluation was performed. The pre and post comparative analysis showed a significant enhancement in belief system, organizational pattern, communication process, and dyadic adjustment. The results of the qualitative study in the focus group also reinforced the effectiveness of the program. • The purpose of this study is to present the results of in-depth analysis of family disintegration experience as a qualitative study to understand the meaning and nature of the experiences of marriage and divorce of women who have divorced in Vietnam. The participants were selected as six Vietnamese women who had been divorced for less than two years after five to 12 years of marriage. The collection of data and the analysis of the data were done by six concrete steps that should be followed in the scientific phenomenology suggested by Colaizzi(1978) Through this study, 74 subjects from 203 semantic meanings were derived and identified as 23 subject groups and finally organized into 7 categories. The seven categories were presented as life in Vietnam before marriage, motive of getting married, method and process of marriage, good experience of marriage, difficult experience in marriage, cause of divorce, changed life after divorce. The results of this study suggest that sexual relationship is a major conflict factor in marriage, and that this problem can lead to divorce. It is hoped that this study will help to find a solution for the dissolution of multicultural families.

  • This study empirically tests whether community participation has a positive effect on parenting efficacy among marriage immigrant women in South Korea. The 3rd wave of the Gyoenggi Education Welfare Panel data was used, which includes 396 marriage immigrant women residing in Gyoenggi Province. Findings of hierarchical multiple regression analyses suggested that higher Korean language proficiency, shorter duration of residency, lower parenting stress and more positive family environment were associated with higher parenting efficacy. Community participation level had a statistically significant and positive impact on parenting efficacy, even after controlling for other variables. The type of community activities did not have significant impact on parenting efficacy, except for children's school activities, which had a negative impact on parenting efficacy. Implications for social work practice are discussed.

  • The quickening pace of international migration in the last twenty years brought fundamental demographic and social changes to the Korean society. Increasing number of marriage-based immigrant families imposes new challenges on social work community; however, the social work community has not been equipped with necessary practice models, sets of skills and professionals with cultural competency. This study aims to explore an integrative framework of social work practice with this client group. Research foci include the profile of marriage-based immigrant families in Korea, available social services at the time, challenges and issues they face, the compatibility of the empowerment based social work practice, and micro/mezzo/macro level concerns that arise for the effective service provision. Challenges among marriage-based immigrant families are converged into personal/familial, community related, and larger social-cultural issues. Empowerment is a multi-dimensional social process to help people gain control over their lives; a process that fosters power in people, for use in their lives, their communities and in their society. Empowerment based social work practice can be the most competent framework for working with multi-cultural families considering their multi-faceted acculturation issues while they navigate thru Korean society. Issues of educating and training of culturally competent social workers are discussed.

The data were underwent through the SPSS 19. Win for frequency, paired-t-test, multiple regression analysis, and for the further analysis of hiearchical multiple regression and the analysis for the mediation effect proposed by Baron & Kenny(1996) and Sobel test(Sobel, 1982). The results were as follows. First, hiearchical multiple regression analysis showed that education level, couples' problems, replanning strategies were proved to be significant for the marital satisfaction of the husbands, while age, couples' problems, acceptance strategies were significant for the marital satisfaction of the wives. Second, cognitive emotion-regulation strategies were proved to partially mediate in the relationship between family stress and marital satisfaction. The limitations of the study and implications for the further research were discussed based on the results.

  • Objectives: This study examined the effects of perceived equity in decision-making and gender role attitudes on marital satisfaction among Chinese-Han and Korean-Chinese migrant women. Methods: Data were drawn from the 'National Survey on the Multi-Cultural Families in 2015' and 1,350 Chinese migrant women born after 1979 under the implementation of "one child policy" were selected. Chi-squared test, t-test, and multiple regression analysis were performed for analysis. Results: There were differences between Chinese-Han and Korean-Chinese in marital satisfaction and perceived equity in decision-making. For Chinese-Han, 'balanced group (perceived fairness in decision-making)' showed higher marital satisfaction than 'underbenefited group (husband is more dominant in decision-making)'. For Korean-Chinese, there was no significant difference between the groups. Conclusions: This study found how the perception of equity in decision-making would affect the quality of international marriage relationship. Especially, for Chinese-Han women, the equity plays an important role in marriage relationship.

  • This study aims to analyze marital satisfaction over the family life course and to find its determinants in Korea and Japan. The data for this study came from nationwide representative sample surveys on family in these two countries including 5,308 Korean and 4,920 Japanese men and women living with their spouses. In order to see the cultural difference and similarity in marital relations, the effects of education, income, employment, marriage gradients (normative patterns between the spouses), family stress, and quality of conjugal interactions on Korean and Japanese couples' marital satisfaction were examined. It was found that the marital satisfaction showed a U-shape pattern for both Korean and Japanese couples. In both countries husbands tend to have higher marital satisfaction than wives over the entire life course. The most important determinants of Korean and Japanese couples' marital satisfaction are good qualities of conjugal interactions including deep trust and concerns for spouse and sex life satisfaction. For Korean couples good conjugal interactions is better predictor of marital satisfaction than sex life, while for Japanese couples sex life is more important determinant of marital satisfaction.

  • To explore the device to allow the marriage immigrants' family to take jobs in our country, the social and economic environments that they face are investigated and analyzed through literature survey and field inquiry. The principal motive of the marriage to Korean is economic problem. But their actual economic conditions are inferior, and other legal problems, such as getting jobs and remitting money to their home country, drive them to unstable status. The present hiring policy is applied only to foreign workers with no domestic relations(E-9), hence the marriage immigrants are excluded from the domestic employment. To make institutional devices for giving them the employment opportunity, the modification of the existing laws are proposed. For examples, the 'Act on employment of foreign workers' can be revised to permit immigrant's relatives to get jobs, and 'Immigration control law' can be amended to guarantee legal qualification for taking jobs. It is desirable that the overall control be made by the Prime Minister's Office, and operation as well as surveillance be performed by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MGEF) and the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MEL).
