  • In this paper, we use image processing algorithms to detect the defects existed on a welding area automatically. It is difficult to detect the welding defects because it is sensitive to lights and has irregular patterns. For this reason, images are captured with 2 kinds of illumination condition, and are processed by 2 different algorithms for each image. The first algorithm separates some ROI's from the captured image and compares the similarity of intensity between each divided region. The second algorithm extracts boundary information from the processed image by the first algorithm, and calculates the length of boundary, curvature and base line area based on boundary information. The proposed method showed high performance in detection and classification of defects.

  • As the rapid growth of Internet, computer systems are growing in its size and complexity. To meet high availability requirements for the systems, one usually uses both hardware and software fault tolerance techniques. To prevent failures of computer systems from software-aging phenomenon that come from long mission time, we adopt software rejuvenation method that stops and restarts the software in the servers intentionally. The method makes the systems clean and healthy state in which the probability of fault occurrence is very low. In this paper, we study how switchover time affects software rejuvenation of primary-backup server systems. Through experiments, we find that switchover time is an essential factor for deciding the rejuvenation policy.

  • In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant QoS routing scheme based on interference awareness for providing both high throughput and minimum end-to-end delay for wireless sensor networks. With the proposed algorithm, it is feasible to find out the optimal transmission path between sensor nodes to the sink node by using cumulative path metric where real-time delivery, high energy efficiency and less interference are considered as in path selection. Finally, simulation results show that network throughput and delay can be improved by using the proposed routing scheme.

  • Many nondestructive test methods used for metallic materials have some limit in application to concrete materials due to their heterogeneity. Impact echo method utilizes the resonance frequency of reflected seismic waves from defects or the boundary between two materials and can be applied to investigate the interior of concrete structures. In this study, a field data acquisition system for the impact echo method was assembled and field tests under various conditions were performed. The impact echo method was applied for investigating thickness/defects/backfilling of concrete structures/tunnel lining/airport pavement. The applicability of the impact echo method to the civil engineering field was substantiated by providing results within $10\%$ errors.

  • The purpose of this study was to detect the pin hole defect of dental composite restoration using lock-in thermography method. Amplitude and phase images of the composite resin specimens were analyzed according to the lock-in frequency and the diameter of defect area. Through the amplitude image analysis, at lock-in frequency of 0.05 Hz, defect diameters 2-5 mm exhibited the highest amplitude contrast value between defective area and sound area. The lock-in frequency range of 0.3-0.5 Hz provided good phase angle contrast for the defect area. At lock-in frequency range of 0.5 Hz, defect diameter of 5 mm exhibited the highest phase contrast value. It is concluded that the infrared lock-in thermography method verified the effectiveness for detecting the pin hole defect of dental composite restoration.

  • The necessity of ultrasonic inspection to detect the cracks in turbine blade is being increased as the forced outage of nuclear power plants have been occurred due to blade failure in turbine components. However, the complex blade root geometry causes the ultrasonic inspection technique not to be established yet and much effort is required to set up a more reliable inspection. In this paper, the ultrasonic inspection technique for flaw detectability, skew angle effect, identification of flaw and geometric signal have been investigated with a test block and discussed the interpretation of ultrasonic signal through the acquisition and analysis of RF waveform. The experimental results show that the proper examination procedure can be established. It is required that the skew angle is essential to decrease the effect of signals from the complex blade geometry. The present results of this study can be applied to the site inspection without blade disassembly.

  • Ultrasonic investigation of damage detection has been widely used for non-destructive testing of various concrete structures. This study focuses on damage detection analysis with the aid of wave propagation in two-phase composite concrete with aggregate (inclusion) and mortar (matrix). To fabricate a realistic simulation model containing a variety of irregular aggregate shapes, the mesh generation technique using an image processing technique was proposed. Initially, the domains and boundaries of the aggregates were extracted from the digital image of a typical concrete cut-section. This enables two different domains: aggregates and mortar in heterogeneous concrete sections, and applied the grids onto these domains to discretize the model. Subsequently, finite element meshes are generated in terms of spatial and temporal requirements of the model size. For improved analysis results, all meshes are designed to be quadrilateral type, and an additional process is conducted to improve the mesh quality. With this simulation model, wave propagation analyses were conducted with a central frequency of 75 kHz of the Mexican hat incident wave. Several void damages, such as needle-shaped cracks and void-shaped holes, were artificially introduced in the model. Finally, various formats of internal damage were detected by implementing energy mapping based signal processing.

  • Studies on nondestructive evaluation methods using electromagnetic waves have been commonly conducted to evaluate necking defects in bored piles. However, the propagation of electromagnetic waves are affected by water contents of surrounding materials. This study aims to investigate a suitability of electromagnetic waves for evaluating necking defects in bored piles embedded in sandy soils through laboratory experiments. Laboratory experiments are performed with a model pile having a necking defect. The diameter and length of model pile are 600 mm and 1 m, respectively, and the model pile is embedded in sandy soils with different water contents of 10%, 20%, and 30%. For the propagation of electromagnetic waves, a transmission line is configured in reinforcement cage using an electrical wire. The generation and detection of electromagnetic waves are conducted using a time domain reflectometer. Experimental results show that the peak amplitude of electromagnetic waves reflected at the necking defect decreases with an increase in the water content in sandy soils. In addition, the velocity of electromagnetic waves reflected from the toe of the model pile decreases win an increase in the water content. However, estimated locations of the necking defects are almost the same to that of the actual location of the necking defect. This study demonstrates that electromagnetic waves may be an effective method for evaluating necking defects in bored piles embedded in sandy soils
