A Study on Distance Estimation in Virtual Space According to Change of Resolution of Static and Dynamic Image (가상현실공간에서 정적 및 동적 이미지의 해상도 변화에 따른 거리추정에 관한 연구)

  • The virtual reality (VR) technology has been used as the application of architectural presentation or simulation tool in the field of industry. The high immersion and intuitive visual information are the great merits of design evaluation or environmental simulation when we are using the virtual environments. But the distortion of distance perception in VR is still a big problem when the accuracy of distance presentation is strictly required. For example, distance estimation is especially important when the virtual environments are applied to the presentational tool for evaluation the space design or planning in the field of architecture. If there are some perception error between the built space in real and represented space in virtual, the accurate design evaluation or modification of design is hard to be carried out during the design development stage. In this paper, we have carried out some experiments about distance estimation in the immersive virtual environments to verify the factors and their influence. We made a hypothesis that the lack of the information for the user in VR causes the different distance estimation from the real world because users are usually comfortable with moving fast and long distance in VR environments compared with moving slow and short distance in real space. So, we carried out basic experiment to prove our hypothesis that the lack of information makes subjects estimate the distance of walking in VR shorter compared with the same distance in real. Also, among the factors that probably affect the distance estimation in VR, we have verified the influence of the image resolution. The influence of resolution degradation of image on the distance estimation was verified with the condition of static and dynamic images. The results showed that the resolution has deep relation with the distance estimation. For example, the subject underestimated the distance at the lower resolution condition. We also found the methods of the making the lower resolution image could affect on the visual perception of subjects.

Predicting Crime Risky Area Using Machine Learning (머신러닝기반 범죄발생 위험지역 예측)

  • In Korea, citizens can only know general information about crime. Thus it is difficult to know how much they are exposed to crime. If the police can predict the crime risky area, it will be possible to cope with the crime efficiently even though insufficient police and enforcement resources. However, there is no prediction system in Korea and the related researches are very much poor. From these backgrounds, the final goal of this study is to develop an automated crime prediction system. However, for the first step, we build a big data set which consists of local real crime information and urban physical or non-physical data. Then, we developed a crime prediction model through machine learning method. Finally, we assumed several possible scenarios and calculated the probability of crime and visualized the results in a map so as to increase the people's understanding. Among the factors affecting the crime occurrence revealed in previous and case studies, data was processed in the form of a big data for machine learning: real crime information, weather information (temperature, rainfall, wind speed, humidity, sunshine, insolation, snowfall, cloud cover) and local information (average building coverage, average floor area ratio, average building height, number of buildings, average appraised land value, average area of residential building, average number of ground floor). Among the supervised machine learning algorithms, the decision tree model, the random forest model, and the SVM model, which are known to be powerful and accurate in various fields were utilized to construct crime prevention model. As a result, decision tree model with the lowest RMSE was selected as an optimal prediction model. Based on this model, several scenarios were set for theft and violence cases which are the most frequent in the case city J, and the probability of crime was estimated by $250{\times}250m$ grid. As a result, we could find that the high crime risky area is occurring in three patterns in case city J. The probability of crime was divided into three classes and visualized in map by $250{\times}250m$ grid. Finally, we could develop a crime prediction model using machine learning algorithm and visualized the crime risky areas in a map which can recalculate the model and visualize the result simultaneously as time and urban conditions change.

Analysis on Disaster Information Effect Process to Occupant Behaviour : Focusing on Relationship to Egress Time (피난시간을 중심으로 본 재실자특성에 대한 재난정보의 작용 과정 분석)

  • Existing efforts to reduce total egress time actually focused on reducing travel time. However, consideration to reduce perception time or response time was insufficient although the ratio of travel time is one-third of total egress time and situations which the safety cannot be ensured by only reducing travel time were aroused. Therefore, the concept of disaster information, which could reduce both perception time and response time got attention To analyze the effect of disaster information on occupant behaviour, this study identified a relationship between 10 major disaster information and 3 occupant behaviour factors in terms of reducing egress time. By referring the relationship, this study conducted an virtual egress experiment with survey on 4 cases, the elderly, intellectual disabled, hearing disabled and visual disabled, to identify disaster information which reduce total egress time effectively. Finally, by analyzing the experiment result, this study proposed the process of disaster information effect on occupant behaviour as complementing insufficient occupant behaviour to ensure the minimum level of safety and maximizing relatively high occupant behaviour to ensure enough level of safety. The results are expected to account for relationship between disaster information and occupant behaviour with more explanatory power in terms of egress time. With further studies of disaster information and group behaviour, these series of studies could provide basic references for disaster information and occupant behaviour.

A Classification of Korean Traditional Materials Focused on Visual Texture (시각적 질감을 중심으로 한 한국 전통소재의 체계적 분류)

  • A designed object reveals its meaning and image through form, color and material. Among these three elements, material has more powerful influence with its tactile and visual characteristics. In Korea, traditionally materials itself were mainly used to design artifacts rather than various color or formal decoration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Korean traditional materials, and to classify them by the characteristics of their texture. For this study, the pictures of Korean traditional artifacts were collected from the national museums and literature. Those are architectural and interior elements, furniture, cloths and textiles, arts and crafts. Total of 533 collected artifacts were classified into seven categories, metal, day, stone, paper, wood, straw, fabric things. : 59 metal things, 115 clay things, 62 stone things, 73 paper things, 80 wood things, 47 straw things, 97 fabric things. Each materials were classified into its forming methods and surface treatment focused on the he characteristics of their surface texture. Throughout this study, the uniqueness of forming method and surface treatment of each materials in Korea has been clarified. And furthermore the classification by this various traditional methods of materials will provide plentiful information and ideas to today's designers of the world.

  • Construction sites are becoming larger and complex with the growth of national economy. Accordingly, It is essential to indentify real-time information about materials, equipments and manpower during construction at job sites. Even though research utilizing cutting-edge sensors has been conducted in architectural engineering field; this area of research is almost nil in civil engineering field. Therefore a feasibility study to find a way to apply cutting-edge sensors to an in-situ tunnel construction site adopting NATM is tried as the first step. After listing all construction materials needed in each activity, the most representative materials were identified so that IT technology can be applied by attaching and monitoring sensors to the selected materials; shotcrete and lining were selected as representative materials. Moreover, a plan to visualize construction process and progress management system using selected representative materials was proposed.

  • V.M.D(Visual Merchandising Design) covers every space, environment, and visually stimulating factor. This includes not only the architectural appearance but interior, graphic sign boards, window display, layout, store appliances, lighting, and even the looks and service attitude that sales employees have and show to customers. V.M.D aims to display merchandise in multiple ways; to heighten brand images; to steadily lure many customers to the store. One of the characteristics that V.M.D has is, that this abandons the previous design concept which solely puts stress on luxurious interior-focused display; that this displays merchandise in a rational and systemic way and induces customers to buy products. In this regard, the objective of this study is to study brand perception and effect of V.M.D displayed in the stores, on customers, and thereby to present the concepts of V.M.D, suitable for display in the stores, which can be used continuously in the future.

  • In construction site, BIM is used in part of construct-ability review and design mistake checking. However, in a current domestic construction site, except public order project, most of work in private order project has been processing based on 2D work. As an expert resists to certain point in introduction of new technique, it may be shown in the introduction of BIM. For this, We need to analysis construct-ability of introducing BIM, work field of introducing and operational capability about present domestic construction engineers. Therefore, this study solves the problem of existing construct-ability analysis, and it visualizes the various information and objects for an effective job performance. Furthermore, construct-ability analysis by BIM that can use an intergrated management is theoretically examined and practical field-application priority among conclusions is proposed through a survey targeting on the hand-on worker. Therefore, this study suggests a factor supplying for a business-centric introduction plan and support condition.

  • Display in commercial space is one of the most important fields in modem advanced industrial sectors as means of promoting the volume of sales. Additionally, consummers' preferences are more complicated and various than before because of improvement of quality of life. In order to satisfy the various comsumer's desire, the role of display must be an important factor in commercial space. On the other hand, the facade of commercial buildings in the concept of visual merchandising has important effect on the commercial space such as layout of a shop, setting up presentation space, and visual expression. The structure of the facade of the store provides not only an advertising function but also an important position to the composition of external space. Besides, enterance space is a part of a store, and it is closely related to outdoor space. Therefore, the relationship between a store and outdoor space should be carefully considered in terms of functional and expressional problems.This study introduces all sort of characteristics of the facade of enterance speac in the commercial buildings. It also investigates the relationship among the characteristics. Moreover, it analyzes the effect of facade style on shop environment such as zonning, inducement plan, and allocation plan. For the purpose of this study, 57 fashion stores, located in Myung-Dong(Seoul), are investigated. Based on the sample, this study analyzes the relationship between the facade style and visual presentation. Finally, it suggests the desirable direction of space composition based upon the concept of visual merchandising.

  • The act of design in landscape architecture consists of a concept within a designer's mind, technical representations, and finally, a process of construction. In the 4th Industrial Revolution, the design process is facing many changes due to the rapid development of computer technology and the IT ecosystem. Computer technology was initially developed for simple functions, such as mathematical calculation and graphic representation. However, after the spread of Personal Computers, starting with IBM and Macintosh, programming languages and hardware rapidly developed, algorithms and applications became specialized, and the purpose of using computers became very diverse. This study diagnoses issues concerning the functions and roles that new design methods, such as computational design, parametric design, and algorithmic design, can play in landscape architecture based on changes in the digital society. The study focused on the design methodology using parametric technology, which has recently received the most attention. First, the basis for discussion was developed by examining the main concepts and characteristics of parametric design in modern landscape architecture. Prior research on the use of parametric design in landscape architecture was analyzed, as were the case studies conducted by landscape design firms. As a result, it was confirmed that parametric design has not been sufficiently discussed in terms of the number and diversity of studies compared to other techniques investigated by landscape design firms. Finally, based on the discussion, the study examined specific cases and future possibilities of the parametric design in landscape architecture.

Comparative analysis of the soundscape evaluation depending on the listening experiment methods (청감실험방식에 따른 음풍경 평가결과 비교분석)

  • The present study aims to investigate the difference of soundscape evaluation results from on-site field test and laboratory test which are commonly used for soundscape surveys. In order to do this, both field and lab tests were carried out at four different areas in Cheongju city. On-site questionnaire surveys were undertaken to 65 people at 13 points. Laboratory listening tests were carried out to 48 adults using recorded sounds and video. Laboratory tests were undertaken to two different groups who had experience of field survey or not. Also, two different sound reproduction tools, headphones and speakers, were used in laboratory tests. As a result, it was found that there is a very close correlation between sound loudness and annoyance in both field and laboratory tests. However, it was concluded that there must be a difference in recognizing the figure sounds between field and laboratory tests since it is hard to apprehend on-site situation only using visual and aural information provided in laboratory tests. In laboratory tests, it was shown that there is a some difference in perceived most loud figure sounds in two groups using headphones and speakers. Also, it was analyzed that there is a tendency that field experienced people recognize the figure sounds using their experienced memory while non-experienced people can not perceive the figure sounds.
