A Study on the Building Process and the Change of Discourse in the Independence Hall of Korea (독립기념관의 건립과정과 담론 변화에 관한 연구)

  • A discourse on the Independence Hall of Korea, a representative cultural project of the 1980s, has been understood as a repetition of the traditional debate of the 1960s. It was considered as a petrified propaganda aimed at ensuring the fragile legitimacy of the military regime, and the architect as a sympathizer. Even if all these facts are true, it does not give any explanation for the architecture. Scrutinizing the building process and the change of discourse in the Independence Hall of Korea, this paper tries to explore a section of contemporary Korean architecture in the 1980s. The architect who designed the Independence Hall of Korea is Kim Kiwoong, however, it was Kim Won who took charge of overall scheme for it. Kim Won replaced the role of a technocrat in the 1960s, who deprived architects of his autonomy. Against this backdrop, Kim Kiwoong attempted to explain his own building via various concept like postmodernism, which gave him very proper context. But, later, he appropriated words like void and madang. These derived from some architectural historian's researches in 1970s, and were to predict the architecture of the 1990s.

A Critical Review on the Historiography of Modern Architecture (근대건축의 역사 서술에 대한 비판적 검토)

  • This study is on historiography of Modern Architecture since its beginning to present. As a critical review of the history of the writing history of Modern Architecture, this study tends to be a meta-history and criticism of historical text. This study try to analyse historiographical project of Modern architecture at specific phase since the beginning of modern architecture. The historiography of Modern architecture shows that writing a history is making a discourse of Modern architecture as a imaginative representation to define and justify Modernism in architecture. The analysis of canonic text since early 20th century proves that the history of writing history of Modern architecture played a critical role not only to shape of our ideal but the practice of architecture with a ideology construction in retrospect. With a name of truth or morality they made myths about the modernity in architecture. So we can find deep 'Hagelean Unconscious' in writing history of Modern architecture not even the first generation of historians but the second generation who were influenced by earlier writer in spite of their intention of revision and overcoming, which is in itself the key concept of Hegel's philosophy of History. Under this kind of 'operative' discourse our view point of Modern architecture were confined and the historiography of Modern architecture itself was narrowly defined as a kind of melodrama that a few architect and work of art matters. The rise of critical history fundamentally has changed the way of seeing and writing the history of Modern architecture. but it has also a new kind of dilemma as regard to writing history and involving practice. This review of historiography traces the texts of historians as like Pevsner, Giedion, Banham, Rowe, Tafuri, Frampton, and Curtis relating to different discours making. When we consider Benjamin's famous concept of constellation, writing history necessarily is a kind of montage making in time and we always need to recognize the historicity of historiography.

  • The purpose of this paper is to organize the issues regarding the necessary components of public design in order to provide an outlook of policy guidelines on urban design based on the concept of publicity and user participation. This paper includes an in-depth analysis of CABE in order to suggest communal notions and the values of public design that would enhance the quality of public design. Thus, it can be used as a reference when catalyzing public design regulations and policies in the future. It analyzes the design review and supportive tools for good decision-making of suggested in the CABE case in order to provide an integrated model of public design to overcome the difficulties presented by current approaches of public design. The unity of values, methods, subjects, issues, and places suggested in this paper is the key notion that emphasizes the importance of the integrated model of public design through the cooperation and communication between gents involved in public design process.

A Study on the Architectural Meaning and Characteristics of L'Art Sacré Movement advocated by Marie Alain Couturie (마리 알랭 쿠튀리에가 주창한 성미술(L'Art Sacré) 운동의 건축적 의미와 특성 고찰)

  • This study aimed to find the architectural meaning and characteristics of L'Art Sacr? Movement advocated by Dominican Father Marie Alain Couturie. From 1936 till 1954 Father Couturier was the chief editor of the review L'Art Sacr? that became very influential among art critics no longer satisfied with what was considered outdated 19th century church interior decoration. Marie Alain Couturie was a French Dominican friar and Catholic priest who gained fame as a designer of stained glass windows. He was noted for his modern inspiration in the field of Sacred Art. Couturier's greatest ambition was to revive Christian art by appealing to the independent masters of his time. From these viewpoint, we investigated the background and process of the movement and analyzed the architectural meaning and characteristics which represented the Art Sacr? movement. The analyzed chapel buildings were as follows: 1) The Church of Notre-Dame de Toute Gr?ce du Plateau d'Assy, bringing together Braque, Matisse, Rouault, L?ger and Chagall, 2) The Chapel of Saint-Marie Rosaire by Henri Matisse, 3) The Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut and The Couvent de La Tourette by Le Corbusier, and 4) The Rothko Chapel by Mark Rothko and Philip Johnson. These L'Art Sacr? projects inscribedthemselveswithin what was the century's most serious attempt at the reintegration of Art and religious space. Courturier's interactions with artists and architects are traced and shown to have played a major role in the evolution of the priest's thinking and Church interior decoration. At the same time, Courturier's clear and vigorous L'Art Sacr? articles were both defining the theoretical basis of new vision and anticipating the renewal of the religious space.

A Study on Monolithic Expression Characteristics of Concrete Buildings With focus on insulated lightweight aggregate concrete (콘크리트 건축물의 모놀리스적 표현특성에 관한 연구 단열경량골재콘크리트를 중심으로)

  • In today's diversified society, it is hard to know which building style represents the architectural style of the time. The simplicity found in monolithic-style buildings forms a symmetrical point with fairly complex structure, and its value can be acknowledged. This study analyzes buildings made of insulating lightweight aggregate concrete in the early 21st century, defines the concept of monolithic expression, and examines how these characteristics are expressed in the space, forms, and structural methods in construction. Unlike a multi-layered exterior wall system, which features multiple layers composed of a variety of materials, the exterior walls built with insulating lightweight aggregate concrete comes in a lump form with a mold form that is tightly filled with concrete as a single material and is monolithic. This is attributed to the creation of spaces characterized by the homogeneity of inner and outer spaces with the use of the same material, continuity of the surface as solidity, spatial characteristics of the stereotomic construction, expression of materiality with the use of exposed concrete, and the contrast of the lump and the space. This not only reveals formal characteristics that expose a discourse about monolithic architecture in contemporary architecture but also provide an opportunity to extend the range of discussion to structures and materials and even to their effects on space.

A Study on the Principle of F.O.A Construction Space Creation Viewed from the Discussion of Otherness (타자성의 담론으로 본 F.O.A 건축 공간생성 원리에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how the otherness philosophy reveals itself in the principle of F.O.A construction space creation. The traditional philosophy of totality is self-centered and thoughts are based on the subject. It couldn't escape from the world associated with the self, and has subordinated the other to the main body. But the philosophy of otherness transcends the subject, to the open, creative way of thinking which acknowledges deconstruction, decentralization, and non-hierarchy. This is very similar to contemporary architecture, which pursuits change, and also to the current state of society. In construction by the construction group F.O.A, which is doing notable activity this generation, there is an attempt to transcend the fixed subject which is seen in the otherness discussion, and realize recategorization by overcoming the boundaries of subject and object. First, by the realization of landscape architecture using a topographical folding technique, boundaries of the subject and object are demolished in the relationship of the landscape construction, and recategorization. Second, by breaking up the meaning of the surface which is a visual and physical boundary for both the internal and external, recategorization is being done. Third, by making the boundary between the interior and exterior indistinct, cognitive threshold is dissolved, and the relationship between the subject and object is being recategorization. In conclusion, we can see that the many recategorization phenomenons that are happening in the F.O.A construction show the otherness that escapes from the conventional and stationary relationship, and recognizes each other at the same time, forming new relationships.

The golden ratio and mathematics education issues (황금비와 수학교육 담론)

  • The purpose of this paper is to offer a history of golden ratio, the criterion raised by Markowsky, and misconceptions about golden ratio. Markowsky(1992) insists that the golden ratio does not appear in the great pyramid of Khufu. On the contrary, we claim that there exists the golden ration on it. Elementary and middle school text books, and domestic history books deal with the great pyramid of Khuff and the Parthenon by examples of the golden ratio. Text books make many incorrect statements about golden ratio; so in teaching and learning the golden ratio, we recommend the design-composition of dynamic symmetry, for example, industrial design, aerodynamic, architecture design, and screen design. Finally we discuss the axial age how to affect the school mathematics with respect to the subject of Thales and the golden ratio.

  • The Media facade is valuing more than utilizing to the display space and has potential as a new urban culture. The possible role of the contents, which can be a variety of expression can be seen that the more importance. Using narrative structure, which is a component of the story, discourse, temporality, spatiality, to analyze to the contents of media façade and this study suggests that new contents of narrative is an appropriate utilization at the new media environment.

Le Corbusier's Influence on Modern Landscape Architecture (모더니즘 조경에 미친 르 코르뷔지에의 영향)

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence and legacy of Le Corbusier, who has been neglected in the past discourse of landscape architecture, on the formation of modernism in landscape architecture. The research examined the relationship between Le Corbusier's ideas and practices and modern landscape architecture in three parts. The first part analyzed chronologically the relationship between architecture and landscape in Le Corbusier's theories and practices. The evaluations and criticisms of Le Corbusier's landscape practices were also examined. The second part analyzed the relationship between Le Corbusier and European Modernism in landscape architecture and his influence on European modern landscape architects focusing on Vera, Lurcat, and Canneel-Claes. The third part looked into Le Corbusier's influence on American and British modern landscape architects including Tunnard, Chruch, Rose, Eckbo, and Kiley. The result of the research showed Le Corbusier's works and theories heavily influenced important landscape architects in Europe and America, who played key roles in forming Modernism in landscape architecture. Rather than introducing Le Corbusier's Modernism theory into the discourse of landscape architecture without questioning, modern landscape architects accepted his theory and practice of Modernism selectively with praise as well as criticism. Canneel-Claes, Turnnad, and Eckbo were the pioneers who tried to establish the basis of Modernism in landscape architecture by positively accepting Le Corubiser's thoughts on Modernism; whereas, Steel and Rose criticized Le Corubiser's attitude on landscape architecture. Church and Kiely were indirectly influenced by Le Corbusier in forming their Modernism style.

The Ethos of Uprising and the Community Searching for the Heart of May 18th in Gwangju (항쟁의 에토스와 공동체 1980년 5월 광주의 마음을 찾아서)

  • In South Korea, the community building projects and so-called 'community businesses' are recently regarded as one of the popular issues for the local people and social activists. The project seems to be a miracle resolution for various social matters such as the deteriorating welfare, health care, security system and the worsening income problem, etc. But these promising social discourses and practices which encourage to build communities are not only constructing 'good governance' for the sound cooperation between the state and civil society, but also allowing government technologies to manage and regulate civil society and citizens. This irony of building community is not yet thoroughly considered. The aim of this article is to ask 'Is building community good for all of people?'; 'How does community guarantee the freedom of people who participate in?'. The reflection for community in South Korean Society has related to The May 18-community in Gwangju. The May 18-community is a keystone for understanding the ethos and pathos of community. This study tries to unravel the relation between the May Uprising and the idea of community throughout affects and hearts of participants. The lived experience and testimony of the people of Gwangju in May, 1980, reveals that community should not be in an order and an notion of security. Examining hearts of members of 'whatever community' in the May Uprising is essential to imagine a new form of community which incorporates liberation and freedom as its base.
