  • To rationally secure and maintain the safety and serviceability of a high-rise building, monitoring of structural responses of members is necessary. As such health monitoring of large-scale building structures has received growing attention by researchers in recent years. However, due to a very large number of members complexity of structural responses of a high-rise building structure, practical difficulties exist in selection of structural members to be sensored for assessment of structural safety of a structure. In this paper, a selection technique for active members for safety monitoring of a high-rise building based on displacement participation factor and strain energy density of a member is investigated.

  • Recently, energy resource management is a major concern around the world. Energy management activities minimize environmental impacts of the energy production. This paper presents design and prototyping of a home electric energy monitoring system that provides residential consumers with real time information about their electricity use. The developed system is composed of an in-house sensing system and a server system. The in-home sensing system is a set of wireless smart plug which have an AC power socket, a relay to switch the socket ON/OFF, a CT sensor to sense current of load appliance and a Kmote. The Kmote is a wireless communication interface based on TinyOS. Each sensing node sends its detection signal to a home gateway via wireless link. The home gateway stores the received signals into a remote database. The server system is composed of a database server and a web server, which provides web-based monitoring system to residential consumers. We analyzed and presented energy consumption data from electrical appliances for 3 months in home. The experimental results show the promising possibilities to estimate the energy consumption patterns and the current status.

  • Recently, the collection of the sensor data and its analysis become important as the smart buildings equipped with the various sensors appear as a usual scene. The interconnection through the wire cable among the sensors is indispensible because of the information collections such as the temperature, the humidity, and the luminance in the rooms and the hallways for the effective management of the in-building energies. However, these interconnections through the cabling will be very costly, time-consuming, and a difficult task since they will cause some damages to the buildings. Therefore, the interconnections through the unwired connections are required in terms of the deployment effectiveness such as time and cost In this paper, the design and the short sequence operation appropriateness are confirmed through the simulation of the signal measurement system for in-building propagation characteristics based on short signature sequence and the analysis of the system characteristics based on the false alarm probability is performed thereafter.

  • Since data-driven building technologies have been widely applied to building energy systems, the accuracy of building sensors has more impacts on the building performance and system performance analysis. Various building sensors, however, can have typical errors including a random error (noise) and a systematic error (bias). The systematic error is indicated by the difference between the mean of measurements and their true value. It may occur due to the sensor's physical condition, measured phenomena, working environments inside the systems. Unfortunately, a conventional calibration method has limitations in calibrating the systematic errors because of the difference between working environments and calibration conditions. In such situations, a novel sensor calibration method is needed to handle various sensor errors, especially for systematic errors, in building energy systems having various thermodynamic environments. This study proposes a building sensor calibration method named Virtual In-situ Calibration (VIC) and shows how it is applied into a real building system and how it solves the sensor errors.

  • Stream data, gathered from ubiquitous sensor networks, change continuously over time. Because they have quite different characteristics from traditional databases, we need new techniques for storing and querying/analyzing these stream data, which are research issues recently emerging. In this research, we implemented a storage manager gathering stream data and storing them into databases, which are sampled continuously from sensor networks. The storage manager cleans faulty data occurred in mobile sensors and it also reduces the size of stream data by merging repeatedly-sampled values into one and by employing the tilted time frame which stores stream data with several different sampling rates. In this research furthermore, we measured the performance of the storage manager in the context of a sensor network monitoring fires of a building. The experimental results reveal that the storage manager reduces significantly the size of storage spaces and it is effective to manage the data stream for real applications monitoring buildings and their fires.

  • Structural health monitoring to determine structural conditions at an early stage and to efficiently manage the energy requirements of buildings using systems that collects relevant data, is under active investigation. Structural monitoring requires cutting-edge technology in which construction, sensing, and ICT technologies are combined. However, the scope of application is limited because expensive sensors and specialized technical skills are often required. In this study, a Raspberry Pi module, one of the most widely used single board computers, a Lora module that is capable of long-distance communication at low power, and a high-performance accelerometer are used to construct a wireless edge computing system that can monitor building response over an extended time period. In addition, the Raspberry Pi module utilizes an edge computing algorithm, and only meaningful data is obtained from the vast amount of acceleration data acquired in real-time. The raw data acquired using Wi-Fi communication are compared to the Laura data to evaluate the accuracy of the data obtained using the system.

  • Digital Magnetic Compass(DMC) has a robust feature against interference in the indoor environment better than compass which is easily disturbed by electromagnetic sources or large ferromagnetic structures. Ultrasonic Sensors are cheap and can give relatively accurate range readings. So they ate used in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping(SLAM). In this paper, we study the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping(SLAM) of mobile robot in the indoor environment with Digital Magnetic Compass and Ultrasonic Sensors. Autonomous mobile robot is aware of robot's moving direction and position by the restricted data. Also robot must localize as quickly as possible. And in the moving of the mobile robot, the mobile robot must acquire a map of its environment. As application for the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping(SLAM) on the autonomous mobile robot system, robot can find the localization and the mapping and can solve the Kid Napping situation for itself. Especially, in the Kid Napping situation, autonomous mobile robot use Ultrasonic sensors and Digital Magnetic Compass(DMC)'s data for moving. The robot is aware of accurate location By using Digital Magnetic Compass(DMC).

  • As the market for life friendly ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) services has grown up, high tech elevator with IoT (Internet of Things), a key area of the fourth industry, have become an indispensable part of life. Existing elevators are composed of up and down buttons to conveniently climb up and down high rise buildings, but there is a small inconvenience that everyone experiences depending on the characteristics of the user's composition, types of use, frequency, etc. Existing elevators are automatically closed if there are no people within the range of sensors, but they are inconvenient for the passengers with disabilities to carry luggage or to use. In this paper, the smart button, a hardware firmware device, was designed to relieve user inconvenience by opening the elevator for a certain period of time considering the boarding time of the passengers.
