  • This study set out to examine the knowledge about and preventive actions against musculoskeletal diseases among dental hygiene students according to the Health Belief Model, suggest a need for programs to promote health and prevent those diseases, and investigate their relations, A survey was taken among 83 sophomores and 114 juniors at the dental hygiene major of a college in Gyeonggi Province. Analyzed by using SAS 8.0 version. The findings are as follows: 1. The sophomores and juniors scored $22.50{\pm}2.37$ and $22.29{\pm}3.01$ points, respectively, on susceptibility of the Health Belief Model with significant differences between the two groups(P < 0.01). Significant differences were also found between the sophomores that scored $18.82{\pm}2.60$ points and the juniors that scored $18.64{\pm}2.77$ points on benefit(P < 0.05). 2. The juniors experienced a higher level of pain than the sophomores with statistical significance observed on the neck, shoulder, lower back, knee, foot, and ankle(P < 0.05). 3. Of the Health Belief Model, severity had significant positive correlations with 'Placing frequently used tools near the dental technician' and 'Trying to avoid repeating the same task and diversify tasks'(P < 0.01). And benefit was positively correlated with 'Trying to reduce the frequency of bending and stretching out during treatment, 'Trying not to lean much with the neck, back, arm, and wrist' and 'Trying to maintain the torso in the neutral position'(P < 0.01). The results suggest that there should be some instructions to help dental hygiene students practice the preventive actions against musculoskeletal diseases and further prevention programs against those diseases.

  • This study was to investigate the factors influencing colorectal cancer(CRC) screening behavior using the health belief model(HBM). It was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. A total of 148 adults aged 50 or older participants were surveyed using structured questionnaires including general characteristics,, health beliefs, and behavioral variables. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, chi-square test and multiple logistic regression using SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. The significant factors influecing CRC screening behavior were perceived sensitivity, spousal experience of CRC screening and family history. Therefore, in order to improve the CRC screening rate, it is necessary to increase the perceived sensitivity through systematic education about the importance of early CRC screening. In addition, it is necessary to assess the spousal screening experience and the family history of subjects and to develop the education program using the partnership of the couple.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influencing factors on health behavior among patients with coronary artery disease. Method: The subjects were 95 patients who visited the out-patient department of a university hospital for follow-up. The four health belief concepts (motivation, benefit, barrier, seriousness), general self-efficacy, health behaviors on medication, diet, exercise, stress management, smoking, and drinking were measured. Result: There were significant differences in the health behavior scores of subjects according to family support and the experience of surgical procedure. Subjects were found to have a high degree of compliance in taking medication. However subjects reported the lowest degree of compliance in regular exercise. In the multiple regression analysis, surgical procedure and motivation were significant predictors to explain diet. Motivation and barrier were significant predictors to explain exercise. Self-efficacy, motivation and family support were significant predictors to explain stress management. Family support and seriousness explained 16% of variance in drinking. Also, family support explained 30% of variance in smoking. Conclusion: Since predicting factors on each health behavior indicator were different, then nurses should consider these differences to construct strategy enhancing patient's recovery.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate osteoporosis knowledge, health beliefs, and influencing factors on health behaviors among female college students. Methods: Using the Osteoporosis Quiz, the Health belief Scale, and the Health Behavior Questionnaire, data were collected from 314 female college students from 4 universities located in Chungcheong providence. Results: The mean scores of knowledge and health belief were $12.7{\pm}3.81$ and $90.9{\pm}12.66$, respectively. There was a statistically significant correlation between osteoporosis knowledge and health belief (p<.001). Also, a statistically significant correlation was found between health belief and health behavior (p<.001). According to the regression model, knowledge, perceived benefit, perceived barrier, family history of osteoporosis, and health interest explained 6.7% of total variance in health behavior. Conclusion: Female college students should be taught to be aware of the importance of proper dietary intake and regular exercise as a way to maintain or promote the health of their bones so that they can prevent osteoporosis.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify nursing students' fall prevention activities, health beliefs of falling and factors associated with fall prevention activities among nursing students. Methods: 149 nursing students from a university completed self-administered questionnaires including participants' characteristics, fall prevention activities, and health belief of falling. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to determine significant independent factors of fall prevention activities. Results: The score for fall prevention activities was $62.40{\pm}9.78$, which was relatively high. The regression model had an adjusted $R^2$ of .16, which indicated that perceived susceptibility was a factor affecting fall prevention activities of nursing students. Conclusion: To increase perceived susceptibility, repetitive fall prevention education including various examples of falls could help nursing students to promote fall prevention activities. Nursing faculty should develop contents to increase recognition of obligation and responsibility regarding fall prevention in curriculum for nursing students.
