Effect of Feeding with High γ-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Containing Giant Embryo Black Sticky Rice (Oryza sativa L.) on Alcohol Intake in C57BL/6 Mice (GABA 고함유 흑찰거대배아미의 투여가 C57BL/6형 생쥐의 알코올 섭취량에 미치는 영향)

  • It is known that black sticky rice with giant embryo (BSRGB, Milyang 263) and giant embryo rice (GER) contains higher levels of GABA than rice. Therefore, feeding BSRGB, GER, or rice freely to C57BL/6 mice with two-hour alcohol intake for 16 days was investigated. For two-hour alcohol intake, a repeated measure ANOVA (three treatment groups repeated across 16 days; 8 two-day blocks) yielded a significant group by block interaction (df=16, F=3.109, p=0.004). The independent t-test showed that significant suppression of two-hour alcohol intake was observed when subjects were administered with BSRGB, compared with the rice alone across all the two-day blocks (p<0.05). The paired t-test revealed that a significant suppression of two-hour alcohol intake was observed starting 4 to 16 days after freely feeding with BSRGB compared to before feeding. However, there is no significant difference in the two-hour alcohol intake observed between the before and after administration of rice. A repeated measure ANOVA revealed no significant group by block interaction for 22-hour water intake and body weight. However, a repeated measure ANOVA revealed a significant grouping by block interaction for food intake. These results indicate a change of two-hour alcohol intake is presumably caused by GABA, which is found in higher levels in BSRGB than in rice.

  • The subject of port efficiency is one of the important issues facing port authorities and policy makers today. A number of studies have been undertaken which compare ports in terms of their efficiency. But any port comparison can only be valid and meaningful if a port’s efficiency is compared with a similar port. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a systematic approach to identifying similar ports based on the technique of principal component analysis and cluster analysis. And it seeks to identify the most important factors underlying the port classification. Lack of awareness of which factors differentiate ports has resulted in an unnecessary collection of data which are of limited use in port classification. This paper has identified five groupings of similar ports within which port comparision can be justifiably made. This approach can be used for any future port comparision.

  • Congenital and perinatal CMV infection is the most common congenital/perinatal viral infection. Only 5 to 10% of affected patients has symptoms, and outcomes are highly vari-able. Gastrointestinal involvement is not usually a manifestation of congenital and perinatal CMV infection. We describe an infant with vomiting and poor weight gain caused by eso-phagitis attributed to perinatally acquired CMV infection.

  • Severe cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection involving multiorgan is very rare except in very low-birth weight infants, or in immunocompromised pediatric patients. We report an unusual case of severe CMV infection involving multiple organs including the central nervous system, liver, lung, and gastrointestinal tract in a late-preterm infant at 2 months of age.

  • Most of today's parallel numerical schemes use synchronous algorithms, where some processors that have finished their tasks earlier than others must wait at synchronization points for correct computation. Hence overall performance of the system is dependent upon the speed of the slowest processor. In this paper, we det·ise a synchronous/asynchronous hybrid algorithm to accelerate convergence of the solution for finding the dominant eigenpair of a large matrix, by reducing the idle times of faster processors using MPMD programming methodology.

  • Atherosclerotic giant aneurysm of the common femoral artery is rare. Because the patients who lose timing of the operation face amputation or death, the surgical treatment must be performed at the proper time. A 72-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a 20-days history of pulsatile growing mass on his left groin. After the diagnosis of giant aneurysm of the common femoral artery by computerized tomography and digital subtraction angiography, an emergent operation was performed. Both deep and superficial femoral arteries were successfully reconstructed with Gore-tex grafts after aneurysmectomy. The pathology of the aneurysm was proved to be atherosclerosis.

  • Silane dendrimer with 96 allylic end groups has been synthesized in excellent yield using repetitive alkenylation-hydrosilylation cycles. Each of the two steps provided the products in almost quantitative yields. After a simple chromotograpic purification (silica gel, chloroform), pure dendrimers were obtained and their purity was checked with 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopic method and elemental analysis.

  • 정보생물학 분야에 있어서 분자 구조를 3차원으로 렌더링하여 보여주는 것은 매우 중요한 작업이다. 특히 분자의 표면 렌더링은 분자의 3차원 구조 분석 등에 중요하게 사용된다. 그러나 분자 표면 렌더링을 수행하기 위해서는 많은 양의 폴리곤이 필요하게 된다. 특히 대장균 바이러스와 같은 분자량이 많은 거대 분자를 자연스럽게 렌더링 하기 위해서는 고가의 그래픽 전용 워크스테이션을 사용해야 한다. 본 논문에서는 저렴한 일반 PC 급 시스템에서도 거대 분자를 무리 없이 렌더링 할 수 있는 효율적인 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 높은 속도와 좋은 화질을 유지할 수 있는 Hybrid Point & Polygon 렌더링 기법이다. 이 알고리즘은 계층적인 자료구조인 옥트리(Octree)를 사용하였으며 최적의 성능을 내기 위하여 GPU가 작업을 처리한다. 제안된 알고리즘의 성능 평가는 일반 PC급에서 수행되었으며 특히 그래픽 카드 2개를 병렬로 연결하여 높은 성능을 낼 수 있는 SLI(Scalable Link Interface) 환경에서 평가를 수행하였다.

  • 본 논문은 거대한 메쉬를 효율적으로 처리하기 위해 이를 조각화하는 새로운 방법을 제시한다. 메쉬의 특징을 반영하여 데이타를 분할하기 위해서 로이드 양자화 방법을 적용하였으며, 거대한 메쉬 데이터를 다루기 위해 외부 메모리를 이용한 부분적인 차트화 갱신 방법을 제시한다. 차트화 갱신 과정에서 효율적으로 매쉬 데이터를 다루기 위해서 임의접근 가능 메쉬 압축구조를 활용한다.이러한 방법을 통해서 수행된 외부 메모리를 이용한 차트화 결과가 지금까지 개발된 메쉬 차트화 결과와 크게 다르지 않음을 보여준다. 이와 같은 메쉬 차트화 시스템을 통해 거대한 메쉬에 기존의 파라미터화, 몰핑, 매칭, 재매쉬화 등의 매쉬 처리기법을 적용할 수 있다.

  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonitis leading to inflammation and obstruction of the tracheobronchial tree may cause the cystic changes in the lung. We performed segmentectomy of lung under the diagnosis of congenital cystic lung disease in an infant of 2 weeks presenting severe respiratory failure. Histology and serology confirmed congenital CMV bronchiolopneumonitis.
