Object-oriented analysis-synthesis coding (OOASC) subdivides each image of a sequence into a number of moving objects and estimates and compensates the motion of each object. It employs a motion parameter technique for estimating motion information of each object. The motion parameter technique employing gradient operators requires a high computational load. The main objective of this paper is to present efficient motion parameter estimation techniques using the hierarchical structure in object-oriented analysis-synthesis coding. In order to achieve this goal, this paper proposes two algorithms : hybrid motion parameter estimation method (HMPEM) and adaptive motion parameter estimation method (AMPEM) using the hierarchical structure. HMPEM uses the proposed hierarchical structure, in which six or eight motion parameters are estimated by a parameter verification process in a low-resolution image, whose size is equal to one fourth of that of an original image. AMPEM uses the same hierarchical structure with the motion detection criterion that measures the amount of motion based on the temporal co-occurrence matrices for adaptive estimation of the motion parameters. This method is fast and easily implemented using parallel processing techniques. Theoretical analysis and computer simulation show that the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of the image reconstructed by the proposed method lies between those of images reconstructed by the conventional 6- and 8-parameter estimation methods with a greatly reduced computational load by a factor of about four.
In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic segmentation method which can be used to generate video object plane (VOP) for object based coding scheme and multimedia authoring environment. Semi-automatic segmentation can be considered as a user-assisted segmentation technique. A user can initially mark objects of interest around the object boundaries and then the selected objects are continuously separated from the un selected areas through time evolution in the image sequences. The proposed segmentation method consists of two processing steps: partially manual intra-frame segmentation and fully automatic inter-frame segmentation. The intra-frame segmentation incorporates user-assistance to define the meaningful complete visual object of interest to be segmentation and decides precise object boundary. The inter-frame segmentation involves boundary and region tracking to obtain temporal coherence of moving object based on the object boundary information of previous frame. The proposed method shows stable and efficient results that could be suitable for many digital video applications such as multimedia contents authoring, content based coding and indexing. Based on this result, we have developed objects based video editing system with several convenient editing functions.
In this paper, improved contour region coding method is proposed to accomplish better depth map coding performance. First of all, in order to use correlation between color video and depth map, a structure in SVC is applied to 3DVC. This can reduce bit-rate of the depth map while supporting the video to be transferred via various collection of network. As the depth map is mainly used to synthesize videos from different views, corrupted contour region can damage the overall quality of video. We hereby adapt a new differential quantization method when separating the contour region. The experimental results show that the proposed method can improve video quality by 0.06~0.5dB which translate the bit rate saving by 0.1~1.15%, when compared to the reference software.
In this study, we propose an efficient method for monitoring continuous top-k queries. In contrast to the conventional top-k queries, the presented top-k query considers both spatial and non-spatial attributes. We proposed a novel main-memory based grid access method, called Bit-Vector Grid Index (BVGI). The proposed method quickly identifies whether the moving objects are included in some of the grid cell by encoding a non-spatial attribute value of the moving object to bit-vector. Experimental simulations demonstrate that the proposed method is several times faster than the previous method and uses considerably less memory.
In this paper, we present a method to reduce complexity of depth modeling modes (DMM) that are used in the current 3D-HEVC standardization. DMM adds four modes to the existing HEVC intra prediction modes for accurate object edge representation in the depth map. Especially, Mode 3 requires distortion calculation of numerous pre-defined wedgelets, inducing high complexity. The proposed method employs absolute differences of neighboring pixels in the sides of the reference block to find high intensity changing positions. Based on such positions, the number of wedgelet candidates is reduced to six and distortion calculation is skipped for irrelevant wedgelets. Experimental results show complexity reduction by 3.1% on average, while maintaining similar coding performance.
The new video coding standard Iv1PEG-4 is enabling content-based functionalities. It requires a prior decomposition of sequences into video object planes (VOP's) so that each VOP represents moving objets. This paper addresses an image segmentation method for separating moving objects from still background (non-moving area) in video sequences using a statistical hypothesis test. In the proposed method. three consecutive image frames are exploited and a hypothesis testing is performed by comparing two means from two consecutive difference images. which results in a T-test. This hypothesis test yields a change detection mask that indicates moving areas (foreground) and non-moving areas (background), Moreover. an effective method for extracting

A bit-rate controller that can achieve a constant bit rate when coding object-based video sequences is an important part to achieve an adaptation to bit-rate constraints, desired video quality, distribution of bits among objects, relationship between texture and shape coding, and determination of frame skip or not. Therefore we design content-based bit rate controller which will be used for relevant bit-rate control. The implementation is an extension of MPEG-4 rate control algorithm which employs a quadratic rate-quantizer model. The importance of different objects in a video is analyzed and segmented into a number of VOPs which are adaptively bit-allocated using the object-based modelling. Some test sequences are observed by a number of non-experts and interests in each object are analysed. The initial total target bit-rate for all objects is obtained by using the proposed technique. Then the total target bits are jointly analyzed for preventing from overflow or underflow of the buffer fullness. The target bits are distributed to each object in view of its importance, not only of statistical analysis such as motion vector magnitude, size of object shape, and coding distortion of previous frame. The scheme is compared with the rate controller adopted by the MPEG-4 VM8 video coder by representing their statistics and performance.

The vertex-based boundary encoding scheme is widely used in object-based video coding area and computer graphics due to its scalability with natural looking approximation. Existing single framebased vertex encoding algorithm is not efficient for temporally correlated video sequences because it does not remove temporal redundancy. In the proposed method, a vertex point is selected from not only the boundary points of the current frame but also the vertex points of the previous frame to remove temporal redundancy of shape information in video sequences. The problem of selecting optimal vertex points is modeled as finding shortest path in the directed acyclic graph with weight The boundary is approximated by a polygon which can be encoded with the smallest number of bits for maximum distortion. The temporal redundancy between two successive frames is efficiently removed with the proposed scheme, resulting in lower bit-rate than the conventional algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a new pre-processing algorithm applied to depth map to improve the coding efficiency. Now, 3DV/FTV group in the MPEG is working for standard of 3DVC(3D video coding), but compression method for depth map images are not confirmed yet. In the proposed algorithm, after dividing the histogram distribution of a given depth map by EM clustering method based on GMM, we classify the depth map into several layered images. Then, we apply different mean shift filter to each classified image according to the existence of background or foreground in it. In other words, we try to maximize the coding efficiency while keeping the boundary of each object and taking average operation toward inner field of the boundary. The experiments are performed with many test images and the results show that the proposed algorithm achieves bits reduction of 19% ~ 20% and computation time is also reduced.
