  • This experiment was conducted to investigate an optimum harvest time for hairy vetch (HV) seed production. The seeds were harvested at 5 times, 35, 42, 48, 54, and 58 days after flowering (DAF) in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, 3 times of harvest, 39, 49, and 53 DAF were done at Suwon, middle part of Korea. HV plants were harvested and threshed by manually at each time. Seed yield, yield components, germination rate, hard seed rate, and viviparous germination rate were investigated. The highest seed yield represented 54 DAF in 2009, 42 DAF in 2010, and 49 DAF in 2011. When the triticale, HV support plant, comes to early lodging, the time of highest yield was delayed. 1,000-seed weight linearly increased from 35 DAF to 54 DAF. The later harvested seed showed a trend of increasing germination and hard seed ratio. However, viviparous germination had occurred because of in rainy season. In conclusion, it was presumed that an optimum harvest time for safe seed production in HV should be during 42 DAF ~ 54 DAF before the rainy season considering seed yield, 1,000-seed weight and germination.

  • To develop the technics of generation shortening for the breeding of rape oil composition. effect of the ethrel and hydroperoxide treatment for the increasing of germination ability during maturing period was investigated. It was the most effect ire for a generation shortening that the seeds after, 10 days treated with $H_2O$$_2$-0.5% and 2, 000ppm of ethrel and after 15 days treated with $H_2O$$_2$-0.5% and 500ppm of ethrel on 15 day after flowering were germinated 76% and 90% respectively. It suggested that effect of ethrel and hydroperoxide was multiple and 4-5 generations could pass in a year because one generation needed only 66-71 days.

  • Orostachys japonicus, called Wasong and used as anti-tumor medicinal plant, was cultivated in plastic house. The experiment was done to clarify the effect of long-day and night-break treatment at the timing of bolting on its morphological characters, organ dry weight and flowering of florets. After grown in 15cm plastic boxes containing 2:1 soil:peat moss mixture for about 4 months, long-day of 16 hours and night-break of 2 hours around midnight were treated from Sept. 9. The plants were sampled 5 times at 2-week interval after the treatments. Long-day and night-break treatment delayed the growth of inflorescence and showed greater stem diameter on the last sampling and no. of leaves and bracts than the natural daylength. The treatments also had greater leaf and bract dry weight since 2 weeks, and the other fraction and total dry weights since 4 weeks but less floret dry weight from 4 to 6 weeks after the treatments than the natural daylength. The treatments, however, decreased no. of flowered florets and ratio of flowering plants although all the treatments showed nearly the same no. of total florets per plant until 6 weeks after the treatments, late October, which resulted in the modification of source to sink or vice versa. In the natural daylength, the florets were functioned as sink, while root, leaf and bract as source, but in the long-day and night-break treatments stem and florets were done as sink.

  • The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In both years of 1960 and 1961, the flowering times, fading times of flowers, mature times of fruits of 63 chestnut varieties grown at Choosan area, Chon Nam, have been investigated. Almost the ages of trees were 26-year-old and they are growing on the brown forest soil well drained with relatively thick surface soil. 2. Non-significant difference in flowering time by the varieties has been found between the years. The carliests in floweing time are Toyotama-wase, The isho-wase, Asami-wase, Umehira-wase, i.e., bloomed on May, 22, or a little later. 3. The fading dates of flowers of each varieties almost linearly correlated to the flowering date. The blooming period of each varieties was about 10 to 12 days. 4. Linear correlation between mature time and blooming time are observed, i.e., the earlier the blooming time comes, the earlier is the mature time of chestnut fruit. 5. The varieties having the smallest sized seed, are Otomune and Boji-kuri, however, those having the large one, are Ho-gin, Katayama, Ohara-wase.

  • Interspecific hybrid seedlings by artificial crossing of Genus Quercus (Q. serrata, Q. dentata, Q. mongolica var. crispula, Q. aliena) were planted at nursery in Tottori University. Seedlings of hybrids by natural crossing(Q. fabri and $Q.{\times}mccormickii$) were selected and planted at Hiruzen district in Tottori University. Artificial interspecific hybrid $F_1$ and natural hybrid $F_1$ bloomed when they were 4 years old and 3 years old, respectively. The pollen fertility and seed viability were investigated from the bloomed individuals in 2001. The germination percentages of the pollens of artificial interspecific hybrid were more than 84% except one individual, and the extension of pollen tubes was normal. The normal seed percentages of artificial interspecific hybrid were more than 90% similar to parents. Germination percentages of normal seed of natural crossing family were more than 64%, respectively, and selfed offsprings of Q. fabri, and $Q.{\times}mccormickii$ hade high reproductive ability.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of shading (50% or not) and pruning height (3cm, 6cm, and 9cm) of remained above-ground plant part on shoot emergence aspect, mortality rate, flowering and cut flower characteristics of two years old Gypsophila paniculata plants. Days to shoot emergence (80%) advanced, emerged shoot number increased and mortality rate surveyed on late October decreased in 50% shading treatment. In addition to, mortality rate decreased, as above-ground plant part was highly pruned. Blooming was earlier with highly pruning the remained above-ground pan and under non-shading condition than shading. Growth traits such flower stalk length, primary branches number, stem diameter, and cut flower yield were the best and also non-particulate rate and rosette formation rate were the lowest in pruning height of 9cm under non-shading condition.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the control effect of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) for Venturia nashicola on Niitaka pear during flowering period. As a nontoxic disinfectant, sodium dichloroisocyanurate is widely used in the field of hygiene and disease prevention, medical treatment, aquiculture as well as plant protection. NaDCC was sprayed on the pear tree inoculated with conidia ($4.5{\times}10^5spores/mL$) of Venturia nashicola and as a result the incidence of pear scab was 23.8% in 750mg/L and 26.2% in 1,000mg/L compare to the 51.6% incidence in untreated tree. No damage in the pollen of pear flower was detected with NaDCC treatments in the full bloom period for six pear cultivar including Wonwhang. A NaDCC single treatment in the early bloom of Niitaka pear showed more than 98% of fertilization rate. Furthermore, there was no incidence of Venturia nashicola on Nitaka pear trees treated with NaDCC 4 times during their growth period.

  • Heading time was hastened by the combination of seeding time and longday treatment in order to elucidate the effect of early heading on earliness in maturity, vegetative growth and grain yield in five barley varieties and four wheat varieties under field conditions in Suwon, Korea, 1978-79. About 15 days of earliness in heading accelerated only 2 to 6 days in maturity. Furthermore, the duration of grain fill was not much prolonged comparing with the extension of days from heading to maturity, because of the extension of periods from heading to anthesis at lower temperature resulting in somewhat greater final grain weight. Periods from heading to anthesis and from anthesis to maturity were negatively correlated with the air temperature. In early heading, leaf area at 10 days after anthesis and net assimilation rate were much limited, and although leaf area duration got larger, presumably, it could not make up for the reduction of grain yield. Grain yield per plant reduced noticeably in early heading. This was mainly caused by the reduction of spike number and grain number per spike.

  • Peanut was cultured with varying planting density and sowing date with and without vinyl-film mulching. Vinyl-film mulching raised soil temperature 4.6$^{\circ}C$ higher than the non-mulched during April and early May, but later-on the soil temperature was similar between the two treatments. The ripening and slender grain ratio increased with closer spacing and earlier sowing. Compared with ordinary cultural practices of May 10th sowing without mulching the peanut yield increased by 9% by mulching sown May 10th, and by 49% by mulching and early sowing April 20th.

  • This experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics, flowering condition and productivity of introduced annual legumes at paddy field of Seonghwan(Cheonan, Chungnam, Korea) from September 2006 to May 2007. Annual legumes used in this study were hairy vetch(Vicia villsa, Rosa), crimson clover(Trifolium incarnatum, Contea), berseem clover(Trifolium alexandrinum, Alexandria), persian clover(Trifolium resupinatum, Prolific), balansa clover(Trifolium michelianum, Paradona), sweet clover(Melilotus officinalis, Yellow) and forage pea(Pisum sativum, Austrian). Emergency rate after seeding were 90% or more in crimson clover, hairy vetch, forage pea and berseem clover. Wintering of hairy vetch and crimson clover were excellent as 98% and 95%, respectively. Flowering rate of harvesting date(May 10) was 100% in crimson clover, 98% in balansa clover, 5% in persian clover and others were not flowering. Fresh and dry matter yield of crimson clover were highest as 72,556 kg/ha and 16,062 kg/ha, respectively. Crude protein yield of hairy vetch was highest as 2,929 kg/ha but not significant with crimson clover(2,169 kg/ha). TDN yield of crimson clover was highest as 9,007 kg/ha but not significant with hairy vetch(7,366 kg/ha). According to the results from this study, it is suggested that crimson clover would be recommendable for autumn-sowing annual legume at paddy field of Central Provinces.
