  • This study of Shintoism is to inquire the relationships between social-political ideology and place of Shinto shrine(神社). In Korea, the Shinto shrine was a place of the center of Japanese colonial policy that symbolized the goal of Japanese Imperialism. This was one of the strategies of "Japan and Korea Are One". Before the China and Japan War in 1937, the number of shrines amounted to 51 sites, 12 of them were closely related to open ports, and the others were located at inland major cities. They also were associated with railroad transportation systems that tied coast and inland major cities. This spatial distribution of shrines was so called "Shrine Network" that was essential in tracing Japanese invasion into Korea. It was an imperial place where Japanese residence and colonial landscape were combined together to show the strength of Japanese Imperialism. Most of shrines were located at a hill with a view on the slope of a mountain and honored Goddess Amaterasu and the Meiji Emperor. I presume from these facts that Shinto Shrine was a supervisionary organization for strategic purpose. The Jeonju Shrine was located on a small hill, Dagasan(65m) where commanded a splendid view of Jeonju city and honored Goddess Amaterasu and the Meiji Emperor. It was a place which was adjacent to Japanese residence and colonial landscape. The Dagasan was changed as a symbolic site for Japanese Imperialism. But, after liberation in 1945, the social-political symbol of the hill was changed. By the strong will of civil, there was a monument to the loyal dead and the national poet, Yi Byeng-gi placed for national identity at the site of the demolished Jeonju Shrine. Dagasan as a place of national identity, shows the symbolic decolonization and the changing ideology. After all, this shows that political ideology is represented in a place with landscape.

  • This study targets ten titles of Hangul banggakbon novels in the Harvard Yenching Library to examine the bibliography, system, and characteristics. Among the ten titles, gyeongpanbon Guunmong, Leehaeryongjeon, Chunhyangjeon, Janggyeongjeon, two titles of Sodaeseongjeon, Honggildongjeon, anseongpanbon Yangpungunjeon, and two titles of wanpanbon Hwaryongdo have been found in Korea, too. However, gyeongpanbon Chunhyangjeon, 30 jangbon of Hyogyosingan(孝橋新刊), and wanpanbon Hwaryongdo seogyeseopobon are the ones that can be hardly found in Korea, and the library has possessed it there so far. With the two titles of Hangul banggakbon novels, it will be needed to reexamine the aspects of publishing Hangul banggakbon novels afterwards. Hangul banggakbon novels that Harvard-Yenching Library has now are mostly the ones that can be easily found in Korea, too. It is because the data started to be collected from the 1950's. In comparison with the materials in England, Russia, or Japan in the early 1890's, there are no rare books that cannot be found in Korea. The reason for this may be found from this.

  • Purpose of this paper is to determine the appropriate size of a center notched disk specimen for mode I fracture toughness $K_{IC}$. For this purpose, mode I test results with various sizes of center notched disk were compared with the RILEM three-point-bend test ones. Compressive strength of concrete used in this paper was 44.9 MPa. Diameters of 200, 300, 400 mm, thickness of 75, 100, 125 mm, and notch length ratios an of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 were used for the mode I disk test. Also, diameter of 300mm thickness of 100mm, and notch length ratios a/R of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 were used for the mixed mode disk test. Mixed mode stress intensity factors were investigated by changing notch angles for the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a center notched disk were calculated with the various methods for comparison. From the test results, mode I fracture toughness calculated from the disk specimen with diameter of 300 mm, thickness of Inn and notch length ratio a/R of 0.5 was very similar to the RILEM three-point-bend test ones. And it is verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen.

  • In this study the evaluation method for riverine naturalness proposed previously by other researcher has been modified to assess stream naturalness of small scaled streams. Two evaluation items have been added to the previously proposed method. That is, the modified method for evaluating naturalness of small scaled streams contains 16 evaluation items with two categories - river morphology and river environments. The three evaluation items have been improved based on the results of stream configuration and characteristics investigation. To prepare evaluation index for channel configuration of small scaled stream, 55 small scaled streams have been selected to analyze sinuosity, wavelength, etc. It has been shown that the values of sinuosity are around 1.2 and one wavelength appears approximately every 500 m in the sample streams. An equation implied diversity for width of normal flow has been proposed to add the evaluation index for diversity of channel width. The every 500 m 1,000 m along small scaled stream is also recommended through the investigation as the interval of evaluation unit. The modified method has been applied to the DangWang stream to estimate the effect of stream rectification project. It has shown that the proposed method would appropriately reflect channel morphology and environments before and after the rectification project.

  • Calcium Carbonate Saturation Index (LI: Langelier Index), an indicator of $CaCO_3(s)$ saturation, indicates corrosiveness of drinking water and it has been used to monitor drinking water conditions in USA, E.U, and Japan. The objective of this research was to measure LI parameters including water temperature, pH, total alkalinity, calcium ion concentration, and electric conductivity, and to evaluate possibility of using LI in domestic system. Results showed that water temperature varied from 2.0 to $26^{\circ}C$ during 15 months, indicating an average annual temperature of $23.9^{\circ}C$. Total alkalinity was from 20 to 45 mg/L. The concentration difference between total alkalinity and $HCO_3{^-}$ value was hardly observed; the concentration of total alkalinity can be replaced by that of $HCO_3{^-}$. Tap water had a medium corrosiveness since LI values were from 2.0 to 0.5. To reduce the corrosiveness and to increase LI values of drinking water, the results of this study showed that chemicals such as $Ca(OH)_2$, $CaCO_3$, NaOH, or $NaHCO_3$ should be added to water treatment plants.

  • Fracture toughness is a material property for crack initiation and propagation in fracture mechanics. For mode I fracture toughness measurement in concrete, RILEM committees 89-FMT proposed three-point bend tests based on the two-parameter fracture model. But, there is no proposed test method as a standard for mixed mode test for now. And RILEM three-point bend test procedure is complicate. Therefore, in this study, brazilian disks of various size were designed as the concrete with a similar specified concrete strength and maximum size of coarse aggregate($G_{max}$) were respectively 20mm and 40mm. And mode I fracture toughness of brazilian disks was compared with that of RILEM three-point bend test. As a result, it was suggested appropriate size(thickness, diameter) and notch length ratio of brazilan disk on the $G_{max}$. And it was verified that stress intensity factors for mixed mode can be easily calculated with the disk specimen. Stress intensity factors of a concrete brazilian disk were evaluated with finite element analysis and five terms approximation for comparison.

  • This paper critically examines the history of the theories connected to the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda that have developed over the last 100 years focusing on the original number of stories the pagoda would have reached. Part II of this paper retraces the dynamic process of the rediscovery of the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda by Westerners who traveled to Korea during the port-opening period. Koreans at the time viewed the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda as an object of no particular appeal or even as an eyesore. However, Westerners appreciated it as a wonder or magnificent sight. Since these Westerners had almost no prior knowledge of Buddhist pagodas, they were able to write objective travelogues. At the time, these visitors generally accepted the theory common among Joseon intellectuals that Wongaksa Temple Pagoda once had thirteen stories. Part III focuses on Japanese government-affiliated scholars' academic research on the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda after the proclamation of the Korean Empire and the Japanese Government-General of Korea's subsequent management of the pagoda as a cultural property during the colonial era. It also discusses issues with Japanese academic research and management. In particular, this portion sheds light on the shift in theories about the original number of stories of the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda from the ten-story theory supported by Sekino Tadashi (關野 貞), whose ideas have held a great influence on this issue over the last 100 years, to the thirteen-story theory and then to the idea that it had more than thirteen. Finally, Part IV addresses the change from the multi-story theory to the ten-story theory in the years after Korea's liberation from Japan until 1962. Moreover, it highlights how Korean intellectuals of the Japanese colonial era predominantly accepted the thirteen-story theory. Since 1962, a considerable quantity of significant research on the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda has been published. However, since most of these studies have applied the ten-story theory suggested in 1962, they are not individually discussed in this paper. This retracing of the history of theories about the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda has verified that although there are reasonable grounds for supporting the thirteen-story theory, it has not been proved in the last 100 years. Moreover, the number of pagoda stories has not been fully discussed in academia. The common theory that both Wongaksa Temple Pagoda and Gyeongcheonsa Temple Pagoda were ten-story pagodas was first formulated by Sekino Tadashi 100 years ago. Since the abrasion of the Wongaksa Temple Stele was so severe the inscriptions on the stele were almost illegible, Sekino argued that the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda was a ten-story pagoda based on an architectural analysis of the then-current condition of the pagoda. Immediately after Sekino presented his argument, a woodblock-printed version of the inscriptions on the Wongaksa Temple Stele was found. This version included a phrase that a thirteen-story pagoda had been erected. In a similar vein, the Dongguk yeoji seungnam (Geographic Encyclopedia of Korea) published by the orders of King Seongjong in the late fifteenth century documented that Gyeongcheonsa Temple Pagoda, the model for the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda, was also a thirteen-story pagoda. The Wongaksa Temple Stele erected on the orders of King Sejo after the establishment of the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda evidently shows that Sekino's ten-story premise is flawed. Sekino himself wrote that "as [the pagoda] consists of a three-story stereobate and a ten-story body, people call it a thirteen-story pagoda," although he viewed the number of stories of the pagoda body as that of the entire pagoda. The inscriptions on the Wongaksa Temple Stele also clearly indicate that the king ordered the construction of the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda as a thirteen-story pagoda. Although unprecedented, this thirteen-story pagoda comprised a ten-story pagoda body over a three-story stereobate. Why would King Sejo have built a thirteen-story pagoda in an unusual form consisting of a ten-story body on top of a three-story stereobate? In order to fully understand King Sejo's intention in building a thirteen-story pagoda, analyzing the Wongaksa Temple Pagoda is necessary. This begins with the restoration of its original name. I disprove Sekino's ten-story theory built upon flawed premises and an eclectic over-thirteen-story theory and urge applying the thirteen-story theory, as the inscriptions on the Wongaksa Temple Stele stated that the pagoda was originally built as a thirteen-story pagoda.
