The Effects of Highlighted Review Type on Consumer's Perception and Behavior: Focusing on Review Usefulness and Skepticism (강조된 리뷰 노출 방식에 따른 소비자 행동 연구: 리뷰의 유용성과 회의감을 중심으로)

  • Though there have been a lot of studies about online product review, the effects of highlighted reviewhave not been examined enough. Highlighted review is a type of review that the platform designer changes its size or position in order to highlight without any sponsorship or incentive. The main subject of this study is about how highlighted review type affects consumer's perception and behavior in online information acquisition. We collected data from 171 subjects to test hypotheses. Using three different types of screen captures, we compared three groups - general review group, positive highlighted review only group, and both positive and negative highlighted review group. As a result, disclosing both of positiveand negative highlighted review was perceived more useful than disclosing only positive highlighted review. However, correlation between highlighted review type and review skepticism was not statistically significant. The impacts of review usefulness and skepticism on platform credibility were statistically significant, and the correlation between platform credibility and usage intention was also significant. All of results is almost similar across two product types, search goods and experiential goods. This research provides practical implications to online shopping platform designers when they design review systems to make people use their platforms.

  • 사용자의 참여를 강조하는 Web2.0 시대를 맞이하여 개인의 블로그나 까페에 올라오는 무수히 많은 리뷰들이 실제 소비자의 마음을 움직이는 데에 많은 영향을 미치고 있다. 하지만 많은 리뷰들이 상당히 길게 작성되어 있기 때문에 원하는 정보만을 찾아내는 것은 어려운 일이다. 본 논문에서는 다양한 종류의 리뷰들 중에서도 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 음식점에 관한 리뷰들을 분석하여 사용자가 원하는 정보를 요약하여 제공하는 방법을 제안한다. 이러한 방법을 통해서 사용자는 객관적인 판단을 내릴 수 있고, 시간적인 측면에서의 효율성을 획득할 수 있을 것이다.

  • Today, the online market has grown rapidly due to the development of digital platforms and the pandemic situation. Therefore, unlike the existing offline market, the distinctiveness of the online market has prompted users to check online reviews. It has been established that reviews play a significant part in influencing the user's purchase intention through precedents of several studies. However, the current review writing method makes it difficult for other users to understand the writer's emotions by expressing them through elements like tone and words. If the writer also wanted to emphasize something, it was very cumbersome to thicken the parts or change the colors to reflect their emotions. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a technique to check the user's emotions through facial expression recognition using a camera, to automatically set colors for each emotion using research on existing emotions and colors, and give colors based on the user's intention.

A Study on the Impact of Chinese Online Customer Reviews on Consumer Purchase Behavior in Online Education Platforms

  • In the post-pandemic era, the demand for online education platforms has surged, leading to increased consumer reliance on online reviews for decision-making. This study investigates the impact of Chinese online customer reviews on consumer purchase behavior in online education. By examining the role of trust, review sentiment, and the quantity and timeliness of reviews, the research aims to understand how these factors influence consumer decisions. By using regression model, findings reveal that negative reviews, timely feedback, and a higher volume of reviews positively affect consumer purchase decisions, while course pricing demonstrates an inverse relationship. Furthermore, cognitive and affective trust mediate the relationship between reviews and purchase behavior, highlighting a reverse U-shaped effect on consumer decision inclination. These insights provide valuable implications for online education providers, emphasizing the need to manage and leverage online reviews to foster consumer trust and improve sales performance.

Author Identification Using Artificial Neural Network (Artificial Neural Network를 이용한 논문 저자 식별)

  • To ensure the fairness, journal reviewers use blind-review system which hides the author information of the journal. Even though the author information is blinded, we could identify the author by looking at the field of the journal or containing words and phrases in the text. In this paper, we collected 315 journals of 20 authors and extracted text data. Bag-of-words were generated after preprocessing and used as an input of artificial neural network. The experiment shows the possibility of circumventing the blind review through identifying the author of the journal. By the experiment, we demonstrate the limitation of the current blind-review system and emphasize the necessity of robust blind-review system.

  • Since 2011, after beginning of the systematic study on STEAM education, South Korea has developed a number of related programs. At this point we see that this is the time to clarify the challenges. The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of their education through the review of many domestic and foreign papers in order to propose the challenges of STEAM education of Korea. The results are as follows. First, the course of integration cannot be separated by the difference in superiority but should be separated in accordance with the purpose of integration. Second, curriculum integration such as STEAM education is characterized by the emphasis on horizontal linking than vertical depth fusion. Accordingly, the content knowledge and vertical linkages are inevitably weakened. In order to overcome this problem, the key concepts and features that were emphasized in the previous curriculum need to also be emphasized in STEAM training, and the comparative study on the core concept and function of each subjects should be preceded. Third, after looking upon the current situation of our country's fusion research and talent training, the limits and the challenges that need to be overcome has been suggested. Fourth, with the basis on research results, we offered an example of the approach on STEAM education which is applicable to the current situation and proposed the challenges and implications that need to be addressed in the STEAM education of Korea in educational contexts such as curriculum, teaching and learning, and evaluation.

Semantic analysis via application of deep learning using Naver movie review data (네이버 영화 리뷰 데이터를 이용한 의미 분석(semantic analysis))

  • With the explosive growth of social media, its abundant text-based data generated by web users has become an important source for data analysis. For example, we often witness online movie reviews from the 'Naver Movie' affecting the general public to decide whether they should watch the movie or not. This study has conducted analysis on the Naver Movie's text-based review data to predict the actual ratings. After examining the distribution of movie ratings, we performed semantics analysis using Korean Natural Language Processing. This research sought to find the best review rating prediction model by comparing machine learning and deep learning models. We also compared various regression and classification models in 2-class and multi-class cases. Lastly we explained the causes of review misclassification related to movie review data characteristics.

The Effects of Sentiment and Readability on Useful Votes for Customer Reviews with Count Type Review Usefulness Index (온라인 리뷰의 감성과 독해 용이성이 리뷰 유용성에 미치는 영향: 가산형 리뷰 유용성 정보 활용)

  • Customer reviews help potential customers make purchasing decisions. However, the prevalence of reviews on websites push the customer to sift through them and change the focus from a mere search to identifying which of the available reviews are valuable and useful for the purchasing decision at hand. To identify useful reviews, websites have developed different mechanisms to give customers options when evaluating existing reviews. Websites allow users to rate the usefulness of a customer review as helpful or not. Amazon.com uses a ratio-type helpfulness, while Yelp.com uses a count-type usefulness index. This usefulness index provides helpful reviews to future potential purchasers. This study investigated the effects of sentiment and readability on useful votes for customer reviews. Similar studies on the relationship between sentiment and readability have focused on the ratio-type usefulness index utilized by websites such as Amazon.com. In this study, Yelp.com's count-type usefulness index for restaurant reviews was used to investigate the relationship between sentiment/readability and usefulness votes. Yelp.com's online customer reviews for stores in the beverage and food categories were used for the analysis. In total, 170,294 reviews containing information on a store's reputation and popularity were used. The control variables were the review length, store reputation, and popularity; the independent variables were the sentiment and readability, while the dependent variable was the number of helpful votes. The review rating is the moderating variable for the review sentiment and readability. The length is the number of characters in a review. The popularity is the number of reviews for a store, and the reputation is the general average rating of all reviews for a store. The readability of a review was calculated with the Coleman-Liau index. The sentiment is a positivity score for the review as calculated by SentiWordNet. The review rating is a preference score selected from 1 to 5 (stars) by the review author. The dependent variable (i.e., usefulness votes) used in this study is a count variable. Therefore, the Poisson regression model, which is commonly used to account for the discrete and nonnegative nature of count data, was applied in the analyses. The increase in helpful votes was assumed to follow a Poisson distribution. Because the Poisson model assumes an equal mean and variance and the data were over-dispersed, a negative binomial distribution model that allows for over-dispersion of the count variable was used for the estimation. Zero-inflated negative binomial regression was used to model count variables with excessive zeros and over-dispersed count outcome variables. With this model, the excess zeros were assumed to be generated through a separate process from the count values and therefore should be modeled as independently as possible. The results showed that positive sentiment had a negative effect on gaining useful votes for positive reviews but no significant effect on negative reviews. Poor readability had a negative effect on gaining useful votes and was not moderated by the review star ratings. These findings yield considerable managerial implications. The results are helpful for online websites when analyzing their review guidelines and identifying useful reviews for their business. Based on this study, positive reviews are not necessarily helpful; therefore, restaurants should consider which type of positive review is helpful for their business. Second, this study is beneficial for businesses and website designers in creating review mechanisms to know which type of reviews to highlight on their websites and which type of reviews can be beneficial to the business. Moreover, this study highlights the review systems employed by websites to allow their customers to post rating reviews.

A Study on the Enhancing Recommendation Performance Using the Linguistic Factor of Online Review based on Deep Learning Technique (딥러닝 기반 온라인 리뷰의 언어학적 특성을 활용한 추천 시스템 성능 향상에 관한 연구)

  • As the online e-commerce market growing, the need for a recommender system that can provide suitable products or services to customer is emerging. Recently, many studies using the sentiment score of online review have been proposed to improve the limitations of study on recommender systems that utilize only quantitative information. However, this methodology has limitation in extracting specific preference information related to customer within online reviews, making it difficult to improve recommendation performance. To address the limitation of previous studies, this study proposes a novel recommendation methodology that applies deep learning technique and uses various linguistic factors within online reviews to elaborately learn customer preferences. First, the interaction was learned nonlinearly using deep learning technique for the purpose to extract complex interactions between customer and product. And to effectively utilize online review, cognitive contents, affective contents, and linguistic style matching that have an important influence on customer's purchasing decisions among linguistic factors were used. To verify the proposed methodology, an experiment was conducted using online review data in Amazon.com, and the experimental results confirmed the superiority of the proposed model. This study contributed to the theoretical and methodological aspects of recommender system study by proposing a methodology that effectively utilizes characteristics of customer's preferences in online reviews.
