To reinforce bearing capacity-changed section or different foundation in the same building, empirical or simple tools have been used. To solve this problem, we suggest the analytical solution that can evaluate and reinforce the stability of foundation. To estimate the effect of reinforcement by replacement in different foundation, soil stiffness evaluation method taking into account the influence factor with respect to depth beneath the foundation need to be applied. In this paper, graphs and relevant formulae are suggested to calculate equivalent soil reaction coefficient showing the effect of reinforcement by crushed stone and lean concrete replacement.

In SPS system, steel beams are used as not only temporary struts supporting the wale but main flexural members of building. Previous experimental works show that RC wale-steel beam joints have some flexural rigidity. In this paper, nonlinear analysis is performed using DRAIN-2DX program to investigate the behaviors of the underground composite frames constructed with SPS system when the rigidity of RC wale-steel beam joints change. Analysis variables are the procedure of construction, magnitude of lateral forces, and flexural rigidity of the RC wale-steel beam joint with stud connector. Analysis results show the effects of joint rigidity for the yielding process of frame and the moment and deflection at the mid-span of beam.
Load tests for ten small-scale foundation models combined with geotextile and sand mat were conducted to study the effect of geotextile, sand mat, and foundation types on deformation of foundation soils. In addition, the experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical analysis using a software program. The main conclusions were summarized as follows : 1. The restraint effect on GIT is more outstanding on the lateral displacement than on the vertical one. 2. The only use of SIM has better effect for the restraint of lateral displacement than vertical ogle. 3. The use of both SIM and GIT are required for the restraint of lateral and vertical displacement.

With developing the next generation high speed railway, there need to be plans to make sure of running safety though researchs on the crack and break of rail by rolling contact fatigue. Therefore, this study performed the parametric analysis effecting on the fatigue life of rail using simplified equations. It analyzed the internal stress of rail according to the track quality, train velocity, wheel radius, track stiffness, sleeper space, wheel load. For the more, via the finite element method, it analyzed shear force on the rail head which could be changed by the early length of crack, angle of crack and temperature. As a result, this study continued the main parameter effecting on the fatigue life of rail.
Recently, the finite element method has been sucessfully extended to treat the rather complex phenomena such as nonlinear buckling problems which are of considerable practical interest. In this study, a finite element program to evaluate the elasto-plastic buckling stress is developed. The Stowell's deformation theory for the plastic buckling of flat plates, which is in good agreement with experimental results, is used to evaluate bending stiffness matrix. A bifurcation analysis is performed to compute the elasto-plastic buckling stress. The subspace iteration method is employed to find the eigenvalues. The results are compared with corresponding exact solutions to the governing equations presented by Stowell and also with experimental data due to Pride. The developed program is applied to obtain elastic and elasto-plastic buckling stresses for various loading cases. The effect of different plate aspect ratio is also investigated.
It is difficult to clarify the dynamic response characteristics of trackbed because of various environmental conditions. However, track irregularity be affected by ununiformed bearing capacity and its dynamic response, study for dynamic response characteristics is required to investigate the cause of track irregularity and countermeasure. In this paper, the response variation for dominant frequency and vibration energy by trackbed structure and material stiffness are investigated. The analysis section is two layered ground structure that is comprised of trackbed and soft rock. This structure amplifies the energy of dominant range easily. It is evaluated to affect track irregularity on comparing by theoritical, analytical and empirical method for dynamic response of the trackbed.
Examining the mechanical characteristic of the bamboo net structure is necessary in order to evaluate the influence of bending rigidity of bamboo on bearing capacity, however, there is no equipment to examine such mechanical behavior of the bamboo net structure in the world. In this study, a specific equipment to examine stress-strain behavior characteristics of the structure of bamboo net is developed. In comparison with Bamboo's stress-strain behavior characteristic and vertical stress caused by various dozer equipments, the case of estimating minimum embedded depth considering ground settlement is analyzed.
In the prediction of response of a pile in soil, numerical approaches such as a finite element method are generally applied due to complicate nonlinear behaviors of soils. However, the numerical methods based on the finite elements require heavy efforts in pile and soil modelling and also take long computing time. So their usage is limited especially in the early design stage in which principal dimensions and properties are not specified and tend to vary. On the contrary, theoretical approaches adopting linear approximations for soils are relatively simple and easy to model and take short computing time. Therefore, if they are validated to be reliable, they would be applicable in predicting responses of a pile in soil, particularly in early design stage. In case of wind turbines regarded in this study, it is required to assess their natural frequencies in early stages, and in this simulation the supporting pile inserted in soil could be replaced with a simplified elastic boundary condition at the bottom end of the wind turbine tower. To do this, analysis for a pile in soil is performed in this study to extract the spring constants at the top end of the pile. The pile in soil can be modelled as a beam on elastic spring by assuming that the soils deform within an elastic range. In this study, it is attempted to predict pile deformations and influence factors for lateral loads by means of the beam-on-spring model. As two example supporting structures for wind turbines, mono pile and suction pile models with different diameters are examined by evaluating their influence factors and validated by comparing them with those reported in literature. In addition, the deflection profiles along the depth and spring constants at the top end of the piles are compared to assess their supporting features.

In this study, lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) strength of high-strength H-beams built up from 800MPa tensile-strength steel was experimentally and analytically evaluated according to current lateral stability provisions (KBC 2009, AISC-LRFD 2010). The motivation was to evaluate whether or not current LTB provisions, which were originally developed for ordinary steel with different stress-strain characteristics, are still applicable to high-strength steel. Two sets of compact-section specimens with relatively low (Set A) or high (Set B) warping stiffness were prepared and tested under uniform moment loading. Laterally unbraced lengths of the test specimens were controlled such that inelastic LTB could be induced. All specimens exhibited LTB strength exceeding the minimum limit required by current provisions by a sufficient margin. Moreover, some specimen in Set A reached a rotation capacity required for plastic design, although its laterally unbraced length belonged to the inelastic LTB range. All the test results indicated that extrapolation of current provisions to high-strength steel is conservative. In order to further analyze the test results, the relationship between inelastic moment and laterally unbraced length was also derived in explicit form for both ordinary- and high-strength steel based on the effective tangent modulus of inelastic section. The analytical relationship derived again showed that extrapolation of current laterally unbraced length limit leads to a conservative design in the case of high-strength steel and that the laterally unbraced length to control the inelastic LTB behavior of high-strength steel beam should be specified by including its unique post-yield strain-hardening characteristics.

The osteogenic potential of hydroxyapatite/poly $\varepsilon$-caprolactone composite (HA/PCL) scaffolds with matrigel was evaluated in a rat calvarial defect model. Calvarial defect formation was surgically created in Sprague Dawley rats (n = 18). HA/PCL scaffold was grafted with matrigel (M-HA/PCL group, n = 6) or without matrigel (HA/PCL group, n = 6). A critical defect group (CD group, n = 6) did not received a graft. Four weeks after surgery, bone formation was evaluated with radiography, micro computed tomography (micro CT) scanning, and histologically. No bone tissue formation was radiographically evident in the CD group. Bone tissue was radiographically evident in the HA/PCL and M-HA/PCL groups, however, there was more bone-similar opacity in the M-HA/PCL group. Micro CT analysis revealed that the bone volume of the M-HA/PCL group was higher than the HA/PCL group, however, no significant difference was found between the HA/PCL and M-HA/PCL groups. Bone mineral density in the M-HA/ PCL group was significantly higher than in the HA/PCL group (p < 0.05). Histologically, new bone was formed only from existing bone in the CD group, showing concavity without bone formation in the defect. In the HA/PCL group, new bone formation was only derived from existing bone, while in the M-HA/PCL group the largest bone formation was observed, with new bone tissue forming at the periphery of existing bone and around the HA/PCL scaffold with matrigel. The results indicate that the combination of HA/PCL scaffold with matrigel may be an effective means of enhancing bone formation in critical-sized bone defects.
