  • This research regards that experiencing certain space according to looking through sensations of body will finally make visual perceptional experience to happen. Our bodies incorporate sensible experience along with interactions with surrounding environment while making movements. The analysis of Seongyojang in Gangleung through top and bottom, depth, movement and experience space which are Merleau Ponty's phenomenological space elements has led to the following conclusions. First, the up and down directivity inherent in Seongyojang has different directions in movements by the axis of plane. Second, the depth by the correlation between things and bodies shows the interactions with things and the depth of space rendered by the servants' quarters of '一字形' and the overlapping effect from the movement between buildings can be seen and felt. Third, mobility is focused on the surroundings for the movements of body and thing. Fourth, the experienced space remains as what it is and is experienced through the experience of traditional cultures. The temporality where the past and the present subsist is given with the application of the modern living pattern in the traditional space. That is, the space from the point of phenomenological view makes the visual-perceptual experience possible through the senses of body, with which the space is experienced and sensed. In other words, the space from the phenomenological viewpoint makes visual-perceptual experience possible through the senses of body so that the space may be experienced and perceived. Through this study, a new viewpoint toward Korean traditional space is expected to be discovered.

  • Basic concept of this study is that architectural form as a material at present has meaning for the dweller's life on the past historical plane. Main method to recover history is ethnographic interview to dwellers. Secondary method is to analyze ancestors' writings, buildings in the background of the family photos, and past drawings and then to relate them with architectural form at present. Taxonomy is a starting point: general name of the building by outside researcher is quite different from it by inside dwellers. 'Haengrang-chae', servant quarter, has never been used for servants. Function of the haengrang went outside thatched houses at the front village. Firsthand observation or simple analyses as results of several precedent research are reexamined and criticized through this study. The mansion has moaning when we synthesize with the site location based on farming land and tenant farmer, and decline of the Kyongpo Lake. Territoriality of the mansion is reinterpreted to 'In-Out Structure' by Yin-Yang thinking, Dwellers extend buildings gradually to outside village, surrounding rear hills, the lake, DongHae Sea, and finally goes to imaginative Taoist heaven beyond real nature through the literary life. Confucius principle, known to govern upper class house at Yi Dynasty also affect general composition of the buildings: perpetuation of the family by ancestor worship, elder dominance and male dominance, fraternity love in the extended family, charity display by reception of guests, Taoist scholarly life harmonized with nature. However, the study of the particular life and usage of the dwellers reinforces or corrects general supposition of precedent researches. Unique shape of the house has been formed by convenience of the dwellers' life style, early modernized free thought over the rigid Confucius design principle, and female power in male dominant society.

  • The human scale of the interior space of a korean traditional residence is normally user-friendly. And this aspect is reinterpreted and implemented in the modern structure. While our conscious awareness has become greatly westernized through the east-west exchanges, the interior of the traditional Korean residence has always reflected the people and their daily lives of the time. In this study, an attempt has been made to identify the aesthetic characteristics of the inner space elements through the analysis of visual perception inside a Korean traditional upper class residence, kangreung Sunkyojang, designated as the 5th Cultural Information Material with regards to the inherent philosophy and human scale that influenced the emotions of the Korean people. The different parts of the interior space of Anchae, and the Symmetrical of Formal, Balance of the walls give a sense of calmness, and the ornaments are used to give gaiety. The ceiling of Yeolwhadang hall give an energetic feeling and pillare are used to enhance spaciousness. In Whalejeong, by making use of similar and continuous lines, the light and darkness was controlled and the link with nature has been emphasized. Different decorations used reflect scholarly spirit.
