  • In the present study, the Direct Inelastic Design (DID) for steel structures developed in the previous study was improved to expand it applicability. The proposed design method can perform inelastic designs that address the design characteristics of steel structures: Group member design, discrete member sizes, variation of moment-carrying capacity according to axial force, connection types, and multiple design criteria and load conditions. The design procedure for the proposed method was established, and a computer program incorporating the design procedure was developed. The design results from the conventional elastic method and the DID were compared and verified by the existing computer program for nonlinear analysis. Compared with the conventional elastic design, the DID addressing the inelastic behavior reduced the total weight of steel members and enhanced the deformability of the structure. The proposed design method is convenient because it can directly perform inelastic design by using linear analysis for secant stiffness. Also, it can achieve structural safety and economical design by controlling deformations of the plastic hinges.

  • This study presents a practice of a scientific methodology, i.e., technology tree to describe hierarchies of functions and technologies of research projects. In this study functional developments of a well-known steel space frame truss are dealt with for an application of the technology tree process to execute the maintenance of road tunnels without blocking vehicles. It is verified that established results of technology tree process can be linked to a proof process of revealed functions and component technologies such as reference works and structural analyses. In the future the technology tree methodology can be extendedly used for an effective tool setting up research plans and developing integrated technologies of a specific item such as a steel structure.

  • In order to quantify the relationships of the important physical factors relating failure to strong earthquake loading, the plastic fatigue problems for structural components under repeated loading were reviewed first. A new concept of very low cycle fatigue failure for structural components under severe cyclic excitations as in strong earthquakes was represented. Also, an experimental study was made of the very low cycle fatigue failure of structural steel elements. It was attempted to realize the ultimate failure in the course of loading repetitions of the order of several to twenty. The test specimen had a form of rectangular plate, representing a thin-plated element in a steel member as wide-flange cross section. It was subjected to uniaxial loading repeatedly, until complete failure takes place after undergoing inelastic buckling, plastic elongation and/or their combination. It was seen as a result that the state of the ultimate failure is closely related to the maximum strain at the extreme fiber in the cross section.

  • This study investigates developments in a prestressing method using the thermal-expanded cover-plates that increases the load-carrying capacity of structures by installing it on upper or lower flanges in case that huge flexural stiffness according to the increase in span length or load are required of steel structure, such as rolled H-beam or built-up beam. This method applies multi-stepwise contraction forces generated by the contraction of cover plates as prestressing forces after joining the cover plate applied by multi-stepwise thermal expansion that was applied to induce prestressing to structures. To perform a theoretical investigation of the prestressing force applied to a structure due to the thermal expansion and induce a multi-stepwise prestressing method using multi-stepwise thermal distribution, this study proposes a theoretical heat transfer solution for the multi-stepwise thermal distribution of cover plates and analyzes the effect of a multi-stepwise prestressing method using the multi-stepwise thermal expansion.

  • Thermally sprayed metals or organic coatings is often used in corrosion protection of steel structures. Duplex coating systems of thermally sprayed metal in combination with organic coating are selected as a new generic type of coatings on steel structures under the highly corrosive environments. In this study, three types of corrosion tests were carried out on four types of thermal sprayed specimens with sealing: zinc, zinc-15%aluminum alloy, aluminum and aluminum-5%magnesium alloy, four types of duplex coated specimens; thermally sprayed metals in combination with paint of acrylic urethane, and painted specimens. NORSOK M-501, Wet/dry cyclic seawater tests and outdoor exposure tests of nine types of specimens were conducted. From the corrosion test results, weathering performance of them were presented.

  • The objective of this study is to examine fatigue behavior of as-welded butt-welded joints with incomplete penetration from fatigue tests. The test results are the following. In static tests, tensile strength and yield strength of butt-welded joints are constant regardless of incomplete penetration. And in fatigue tests, fatigue strength of fully penetrated butt-welded joints satisfies fatigue limits, prescribed in Korean Specifications and JSSC, respectively. The results show that as the magnitude of incomplete penetration increases, fatigue strength decreases. In fractured surfaces, full and incomplete penetration specimen show different shapes, it is because that stress concentration factor vary with structural geometry in bead toe and root tip, and certify in FEM analysis. This study suggests that defects such as incomplete penetration from welding must be avoided in order to attain the sufficient life of steel structures.

  • Steel structures have a higher probability of being damaged by fatigue than by other causes of deterioration. As such, their maintenance to prevent fatigue damage is essential to sustain their safety and performance during their service period. In their maintenance, the current state of their fatigue cracks must be assessed to determine appropriate reinforcement methods and the suitable time intervals of periodic inspections when fatigue cracks are detected. Determining the crack growth rate is a successful method of predicting fractures, but it requires technical knowledge on fracture mechanics and experience in numerical methods and software for finite element analysis. In this study, a fatigue crack growth test on through-thickness cracked steel plates was conducted to assess the crack growth rate without superior technical knowledge and experience. The relationship between the Crack Opening Displacement (COD) and the crack growth rate was found in relatively long fatigue cracks.

  • A through diaphragm is often used to ensure their stiffness for moment-resisting connections using rectangular steel-tube column and H-shaped beam. The through-diaphragm connections, however, have some difficulties for their applicabilities to the field due to the complexity of the fabrication and construction processes. This study thus proposes a new modular system of steel structures assembled only using bolts without welding, by bringing a connection module composed of rectangular steel-tube column, H-shaped beam and oneway bolt onto the site. An experimental study to evaluate the seismic performance of the proposed connection details based on the new modular system is then conducted. The length and type of the inner reinforcement plate are considered as the primary design parameters, and the strength, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capability of the new connections are experimentally analyzed by comparison to those of conventional through diaphragm connections.

  • Generally the connection of members is defined as hinge or rigid. But, real joints on structure have to be considered semi-rigid connections because this permits relative rotation for members on joints. The purpose of this study is to derive a generalized tangential stiffness matrix of frames with semi-rigid connections and to develop a buckling analysis program. For the exact stiffness matrix, an accurate displacement field is introduced using an equilibrium equation for beam-columns under the bending and axial forces. Also, stability functions that consider sway deformation and force-displacement relations with rotational spring on ends were defined. In order to illustrate the accuracy of this study and the characteristics of semi-rigid for system buckling load, samples of angle-, portal- and 3-story frames with semi-rigid connections are presented, where the proposed approach is found to be in excellent agreement with other research results. Meanwhile, the application of codes such as Eurocode 3 and LRFD led to significant inaccuracies.

  • In the fabrication of steel bridges, blast cleaning prior to painting is carried out on the steel members to clean the forged surface and to increase the adhesive property of the applied painting systems. The effect of blast cleaning on the fatigue strength improvement of the weld joints, however, is not clear. In this study, Almen strips and steel specimens were blast-treated, conforming to ten types of blast-cleaning conditions deducted from the blast-cleaning conditions of seven steel structure fabrication companies. The arc height, roughness, hardness, and compressive residual stress were measured before and after the implementation of the ten blast-cleaning methods, and the relationship between the blast conditions and the measured values was studied. The geometry of the weld toe and the compressive residual stress near the weld toe were also measured before and after the blast cleaning of the butt-welded joints, and fatigue tests were carried out on the butt weld joints. The test results showed that blast cleaning significantly increases the fatigue strength and limit.
