  • A predicting method for ultimate vertical and horizontal bearing capacity by means of PAR(Pile Analysis Routines) was suggested. Based on the static pile load test data, case studies by means of PAR were performed. Ultimate pile capacity predicted by PAR was within 15% error range of that determined by stairs pile load tests. Also, the results of static pile load test, statnamic tests and PDA data performed on pipe piles were compared and, by using PAR, ultimate pile capacity was determined. Distributions of atrial pile load could be predicted and load transfer analysis could be done approximately by those distributions.

  • Conventionally, because evaluation methods of the bearing capacity for double steel pipe-concrete composite pile design have not been established, the conventional vertical bearing capacity equations for steel hollow pile are used. However, there are severe differences between the predictions from these equations, and the most conservative one among vertical bearing capacity predictions are conventionally adopted as a design value. Consequently, the current prediction method for vertical bearing capacity of composite pile prediction composite pile causes design reliability and economical feasibility to be low. This paper investigated mechanical behaviors of a new composite pile, with a cross-section composed of double steel pipes filled with concrete (DSCT), vertical bearing capacities were analyzed for several DSCT pile conditions. Axisymmetric finite element models for DSCT pile and surrounding ground were created and they were used to analyze effects on behaviors of DSCT pile pile by embedding depth, stiffness of plugging material at pile tip, height of plugging material at pile tip, and rockbed material. Additionally, results from conventional design prediction equations for vertical bearing capacity at steel hollow pile tip were compared with that from numerical results, and the use of the conventional equations for steel hollow pile was examined to apply to that for DSCT pile.

  • The typical bonding methods which connect steel pipe pile and spread footing is bolted bonding method using +type cover plate for reinforcing a head of steel pipe pile. In this paper, stability of spread footing in pile foundation have been evaluated by loading test of +type cover plate for reinforcing a head of pile and hook type bonding method. The presents results from a series of pilot model test on vertically loaded piles foundation of bolted bonding method and hook type bonding method, pile foundation is identified to safety due to pile foundation exceed 8.5~21% which more than yield stress of steel pipe pile. As the results of horizontal loading tests, peak load of piles foundation of hook type bonding method has estimated in 41.1tonf and it was exceed about 33% which more than pile foundation of bolted bonding method.

  • The project comprised the construction of the new oil pier and associated topside facilities and demolition of exiting south pier. The site is located approximately 33km south of Kuwait city at MAA refinery. The approach trestle and berth structures of the new oil pier were designed to be supported by steel tubular piles Total 2,480 numbers of piles(795 piles at Approach Trestle, 1187 piles at Berth 1 -4 and 498 piles at Berth 5-6) had to be driven through the calcareous silty sand In this study, the design procedures for offshore steel pipe piles, evaluation for the compression and tension capacities by static and dynamic load test and effective driving criteria by the final set values are discussed

  • A composite pile consisted of a concrete lower part with a steel tubular pile at upper part was installed by pre-drilling method. Seven pairs of strain gauges and inclinometer were attached on the pile in order to measure stresses and displacement along the pile during the lateral loading test. The results of instrumentation were analyzed using various theoretical approaches. The back analysis showed that the measured stresses were smaller than those of the calculated. The maximum stress is measured at the steel upper part and decreased rapidly with depth of the pile. The calculated lateral displacement along the pile provide very good agreement with the measured values if the coefficient of subgrade reaction is selected properly. The design concept of a composite pile is verified by the measured stresses and displacement which is within the tolerable limits of the pile.

  • Jacked pile that involves the use of hydraulic jacks to press the piles into the ground is free from noise and vibration, and is possibly installed within a limited construction area. Thus, as an alternative to conventional pile driving methods, pile jacking could become widely accepted for the construction projects in urban area (e.g., reconstruction or remodeling construction projects). Great concern has arisen over the prediction of axially loaded jacked pile behavior. Against this background, a series of pile load tests were hence conducted on a jacked steel pipe pile installed in weathered zone (i.e., weathered soil and weathered rock). From the test results, base resistance and shaft resistance for each test condition were evaluated and compared with the values predicted by the previous driven pile resistance assessment method. Test results showed that the previous driven pile resistance assessment method highly underestimated both the base and shaft resistances of a jacked pile; differences were more obviously observed with the shaft resistance. The reason for this discrepancy is that a driven pile normally experiences a larger number of loading/unloading cycles during installation, and therefore shows significantly degraded stiffness of surrounding soil. Based on the results of the pile load tests, particular attention was given to the modification of the previous driven pile resistance assessment method for investigating the axially loaded jacked pile behavior.

  • Mudstone has characteristics that it has high enough strength and stiffness in a dry condition, but the strength and stiffness decrease in a wet condition with groundwater infiltration. The sliding of cut slope frequently encountered in Pohang area has been reported due to the rapid reduction of shear strength in mudstone after being exposed to the air. The study in this paper shows that mudstone having enough strength in a boring stage has lost the strength after installing PRD (percussion rotary drill) steel pipe pile inducing an insufficient bearing capacity. Field test has been performed to investigate the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone with various methods such as MSG (Micro Silica Grouting) around the tip and side of a pile, the perimeter grouting combined with Micro pile reinforcement, and concrete filling after tip reinforcing grouting. MSG has been turned out to be the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone, confirmed by the static load test.

  • In this study, the load-transfer behavior along the shaft of the prebored and precast piles was investigated by pile loading tests. Special attention was given to quantifying the skin frictions developed between the pile-soil interfaces of the 14 instrumented test piles. Based on this detailed field tests, the load - settlement curves and axial load distributions of piles were obtained and the load-transfer curves (t-z curves) for the test piles were proposed. As such, it is found that the test results show two different load transfer behaviors; ductile and brittle behavior curves. The corresponding t-z curves are proposed based on the hyperbolic- and sawtooth-shape, respectively. By validating the accuracy of the proposed curves, it is also found that the prediction results based on the proposed load-transfer curve are in good agreement with the general trends observed by the field loading tests.

  • Various kinds of shear connector such as headed stud, channel, perforated steel plate and others are commonly used to transfer stress and present composite performance in composite structures, and many researches have been conducted to improve the characteristics of different types of shear connectors. It is focused in this study on the bending performance of steel pipe pile cap with the open type perforated shear connector for the composite connection to the spread footing. Nonlinear analysis was conducted, using ABAQUS, a finite element analysis program, to obtain information for determining the characteristics of the structure and to allow various parametric analysis for bending performance of steel pipe pile cap with the open perforated shear connector.
