  • In order to estimate peak ground motions and frequency characteristics of strong ground motions in southern korea, we employed the stochastic simulation method with the moment magnitude(M$_{w}$) and the hypocentral distance(R). We estimated same input parameters that account for specific properties of source and propagation processes, and applied them to the stochastic simulation method. The stress drop($\Delta$$\sigma$) of 100-bar was estimated considering results of research in ENA, China, and southern korea. The attenuation parameter x was calculated by analyzing 57 seismograms recorded from September 1996 to October 1997 and the estimation result of the attenuation parameter x is 0.00112+0.000224 R where R is hypocenter distance. We estimated strong ground motion relations using the stochastic simulation method with suitable input parameters(e.g. $\Delta$$\sigma$, x, and so on). At last, we derived relations between hypocentral distances and ground motions(seismic attenuation equation) using results of the stochastic prediction.esults of the stochastic prediction.n.

  • A snaked-line array antenna is investigated for the use of high gain antenna at X-band frequency by studing its attenation constant and the radiation pattern. Attenuation constant which is equivalent to the radiation resistance varies roughly as a function of the square of sinh$\theta$a where sin$\theta$a corresponds to the amplitude of sinusoidal form of snaked-line. The directivity is determined by the number of snaked-line antennas and the periodic units of a snaked line.

  • Over the 50 percents of women who are older than 45 years have osteoporosis. Because people hardly recognize this disease by themselves, the researches that measure bone mineral density have been doing widely to detect osteoporosis in the early stage. The most widely used methods for bone mineral density measurement are based on the X-ray imaging. Among them, DEXA(Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) imaging is one of the important methods in bone mineral density measurement. DEXA images are useful methods to increase diagnosis efficiency by reducing anatomic noise as two images obtained from two different energy levels. However, it has some problems to a calibration parameter determined by the heuristic method for bone extraction. In this paper, we propose the method to extract bone in DEXA image using calibration parameter based on anatomic attenuation coefficient. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method is effective.

  • A set of field investigations was performed to estimate accurately the predominant periods of seismic 8round motions and the attenuation characteristics of the seismic ground vibration. Predominant periods of ground motions were estimated from the measurement of the continuous microseismic vibratins of certain periods, inherent in the ground and in the buildings, utilizing the high sensitivity digital velocity seismometer consisting of 3-component geophones and a digital seismograph. Estimated predominant periods of microseismic vibraion of the ground(measured on'the ground surface) and the building (measured on the second floor) were in the range of 0.18~0.235 sec. and 0.26~0.31 sec. respectively. The subsurface structure of the site ground was surveyed by the seismic refraction method utilizing the digital seismicwave probing system. The ground structure was found to be a two-layered system : an upper top soil layer of 7m in thickness with the P-wave velocity of 662m1sec and a lower layer of silty-clayey soils with the P -wave velocity of 2210m1 sec. The attenuation characteristics of the seismic ground vibrations were determined by the amplitude decay measurement method us;ng the Seisgun, which produces strong artificial seismic energy. Measured spatial attenuation coefficients of the ground vibration in vertical(Z) longitudinal(X), transverse(Y) direction were 0.1137, 0.0025, and 0.0290 respectively. Estimated Spartial QP's (inverse of the specific dissipation constant w.r.t. shear waved of X, Y, and Z directions were in the range of 5.913~7.575, 32.371~41.452, 2.794~3.579 re spectively. This indicates that aseimic design of the structures on the site should take stronger consideration regarding the earthquake resistance characteristics of the structures against longitudinal ground motion.
