The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of cleavages on indirect tensile strength (ITS) of the granite. Brazilian disc tests and ring tests with three different hole sizes were performed. 2D DEM (Discrete Element Method) simulation was employed to further understand the failure process during the tests and the mechanism behind. Results show that ITS decreases across hardway, grain and rift cleavage. Measured average ITS from ring tests is about 2.5 ~ 6.4 times of those measured from Brazilian disc tests, and it decreases with increasing ratio of diameters of inner hole and specimen. Failure pattern in ring tests is influenced by both hole size and relative positions of cleavages parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction.
Isotropic rock and anisotropic rock have different tensile strength which has the greatest influence on rock failure. In this study, elastic modulus of anisotropic rock is obtained through uniaxial compression test, and tensile strength and tension failure behavior are analyzed through indirect tensile strength test. Stress concentration factor of a specimen at the center is obtained from anisotropic elastic modulus and strain by indirect tensile strength test. Theoretical solutions for tensile strength of isotropic and anisotropic rock are compared. Stress concentration factor of anisotropic rock is either higher or lower than isotropic rock depending on the inclination angle of bedding plane. The use of stress concentration factor of isotropic rock resulted in overestimation or underestimation of tensile strength.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of several dual-cure cements by different curing modes. Materials and Methods: One resin-modified glass ionomer cement (FujiCEM 2), two conventional dual-cure resin cements (RelyX ARC, Multilink N), and two dual-cure self-adhesive resin cements (RelyX U200, G-CEM LinkAce) were used. To evaluate the influence of the curing methods, each cements divided into four conditions (n = 20); Condition 1: self-curing for 10 minutes, Condition 2: immediate after 20 seconds light-curing, Condition 3: 24 hours after self-curing, Condition 4: 24 hours after light-curing. The compressive strength and diametral tensile strength were measured with a universal testing machine. All data were statistically analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's test. Results: The results showed the compressive strength and diametral tensile strength after 24 hours in all curing modes were higher than immediate except RelyX ARC light-cured and Multilink N light-cured. The FujiCEM 2 showed lowest values (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The outcome was cement-depend, but there is no significant difference about compressive strength and diametral tensile strength between dual-cure self-adhesive resin cements and conventional resin cements. And this result will be used as a base line data selecting resin cement for favorable long-term prognosis.

In general, Fracture of the material is not occurring of the maximum normal stress or the maximum shear stress failure in the state. Maximum normal stress and maximum shear stress in the state of Critical coupling from being destroyed based on the Mohr-Coulomb theory. Couple of different mixtures, including permeable asphalt pavement, SMA and dense-graded asphalt mixture, were used for compression triaxial test at $45^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. Mohr-Coulomb theory to the analysis of compression triaxial test result of the internal friction angle $38.9^{\circ}{\sim}46.9^{\circ}$ measured somewhat irregularly, but in the case of cohesion, depending on whether the temperature and immersion of the specimen appeared differently. In addition, Indirect tensile test and compression triaxial test of the asphalt mixture to determine the correlation between compression triaxial test results assessed as cohesion and internal friction angle calculated using the theoretical Indirect tensile strength and measured indirectly tensile strength were analyzed. The Measured & Predicted IDT St values tended to be proportional.
Many temperature-related problems are created in asphalt pavement due to the low temperature. In particular, loss of tensile strength due to low temperature is known to be responsible for thermal failure of pavements in cold regions under $-20^{\circ}C$. The objective of this study is to evaluate characteristics of resistance against low-temperature cracking of polymer asphalt concrete mixtures modified with LDPE and SBS. The test results showed that the mixtures had the maximum indirect tensile strength(ITS) at low temperature ranging from $-10^{\circ}C. It was proved through ITS test that the stress due to differential thermal contraction over the tensile strength did generate internal damage at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. It was shown that the asphalt mixtures modified with polymer had better ITS than the normal asphalt mixture at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. Thus the effect of modification was revealed as tensile strength improvement. From the results of this study, it was recommended that polymer-modified asphalt should be used in order to prevent low-temperature cracking in cold region.

Bonded concrete overlay is a favorable maintenance method since the material properties are similar to existing concrete pavements. In addition, bonded concrete overlay has advantage of structural performance based on being bonded together, both for the overlay layer and the existing pavement which perform as one monolithic layer. Therefore, it is important to have a suitable bond strength criteria for long term performance of bonded concrete overlay. This study aimed to investigate the affecting of bond strength on various bond characteristics, and to compare the bond strength between direct tensile test and indirect tensile test due to various conditions such as overlay materials, compressive and flexure strength of existing pavement, and deterioration status of existing pavement. As a result of this study, bond strength occurred by both of direct and indirect tensile test due to monotonic load is highly correlated such as coefficient of determination of 0.75 and P-value of 0.002. However, bond strength by indirect tensile test was relatively higher than bond strength by direct tensile test. It was known that correlation between direct and indirect tensile test was possible to use the characteristics analysis of bond fatigue behavior based on bond strength due to cyclic load which can simulate real field behavior of bonded concrete overlay.

This study examines the importance of conditioning temperature and period before measuring fundamental properties of asphalt mixture. Marshall specimens were made and cured in the air for one day and conditioned by submerging at $60^{\circ}C$ water for 30 min before loading. It was observed that if the specimen was cured in a lower (or higher) than normal lab temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) before submerging, the measured values were not consistent. Indirect tensile strength (ITS) was also measured on the specimens cured at different temperatures. Although there is no regulation specifying how long the specimen should be conditioned before testing, it is recommended that the conditioning time be for the specimen to be at $25^{\circ}C$. Test must be conducted for the specimen cured well before conditioning for desired test. If curing temperature was lower or higher than normal, and mixture was not properly cured, then test results would not be reliable. This study showed how long the specimen should be submerged at $60^{\circ}C$ for Marshall test and conditioned at $25^{\circ}C$ for ITS test for the specimens cured in different temperature.

The optimum fiber and asphalt binder contents were decided on the base of the Mashall mix design method. To compare the mechanical characteristics between the conventional(dense-graded 20) and the fiber-reinforced mixtures, indirect tension tests were conducted under three temperatures(5, 20, 60$^{\circ}C$). In particular, the wheel tracking tests were performed to evaluate the rutting resistances of the mixtures. Test results showed that the indirect tensile strength of fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete was higher than that of conventional one. The toughness of fiber-reinforced mixture was 1.27 to 1.97 times higher than that of conventional one, depending upon the temperature. In addition, the results of wheel tracking tests and the retained indirect splitting tension tests conducted at $60^{\circ}C$ revealed that the resistance to permanent deformation of fiber-reinforced mixture was stronger than that of the conventional one.

The research was performed to evaluate the cracking resistance characteristics of cold-mixed reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) using indirect tensile strength test and fatigue tests. Indirect tensile tests were conducted to estimate the indirect tensile strength at variable temperatures($10^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$). Fatigue tests were also carried out using 500kgf, 400kgf, and 300kgf of dynamic loads, and the fatigue life (Nf) for each mixture was measured. Indirect tensile strength of cold-mixed reclaimed asphalt pavement was about 90% of conventional 13mm dense-graded asphalt mixture. Fatigue life of cold-mixed reclaimed asphalt mixture was 70%, 55%, 30% (for 500kgf, 400kgf, 300kgf of load level, respectively) of the conventional one.
