  • To derive easily the coefficient of permeability from several other soil properties, the estimation model of coefficient of permeability was proposed using linear regression analysis. The coefficient of permeability is one of the major factors to evaluate the soil characteristics. The study area is located in Kangwon-do Pyeongchang-gun Jinbu-Myeon. Soil samples of 45 spots were taken from the study area and various soil tests were carried out in laboratory. After selecting the soil factor influenced by the coefficient of permeability through the correlation analysis, the estimation model of coefficient of permeability was developed using the linear regression analysis between the selected soil factor and the coefficient of permeability from permeability test. Also, the estimation model of coefficient of permeability was compared with the results from permeability test and empirical equation, and the suitability of proposed model was proved. As the result of correlation analysis between various soil factors and the coefficient of permeability using SPSS(statistical package for the social sciences), the largest influence factor of coefficient of permeability were the effective grain size, porosity and dry unit weight. The coefficient of permeability calculated from the proposed model was similar to that resulted from permeability test. Therefore, the proposed model can be used in case of estimating the coefficient of permeability at the same soil condition like study area.

  • Probabilistic prediction methods of landslides which have been developed in recent can be reliable with premise of detailed survey and analysis based on deep and special knowledge. However, landslide susceptibility should also be analyzed with some reliable and simple methods by various people such as government officials and engineering geologists who do not have deep statistical knowledge at the moment of hazards. Therefore, this study suggests an evaluation chart of landslide susceptibility with high reliability drawn by accurate statistical approaches, which the chart can be understood easily and utilized for both specialists and non-specialists. The evaluation chart was developed by a quantification method based on canonical correlation analysis using the data of geology, topography, and soil property of landslides in Korea. This study analyzed field data and laboratory test results and determined influential factors and rating values of each factor. The quantification analysis result shows that slope angle has the highest significance among the factors and elevation, permeability coefficient, porosity, lithology, and dry density are important in descending order. Based on the score assigned to each evaluation factor, an evaluation chart of landslide susceptibility was developed with rating values in each class of a factor. It is possible for an analyst to identify susceptibility degree of a landslide by checking each property of an evaluation factor and calculating sum of the rating values. This result can also be used to draw landslide susceptibility maps based on GIS techniques.

  • The wireless sensor network system has the advantage of confirming the behavior of the entire facility by improving the disadvantages of conventional monitoring system. As a result, it is widely proposed as safety diagnosis and measurement of structures, water management systems, and management systems for dam structures. However, there is a lack of research that can evaluate the condition of facilities such as safety at the same time as monitoring. In this study, it is proposed a wireless sensor network system which can evaluate the behavior characteristics of facilities and evaluate the safety status for improving the technical disadvantages on conventional monitoring system. The geotechnical risk factors for the reservoir dam facility were evaluated and the limit values for the risk factors causing the failure of the facility were set. In other words, the system was set up so that the risk factors can be measured and the limit status can be evaluated immediately for each factor. In this study, numerical analysis is carried out for seepage and slope stability analysis using the typical cross section for reservoir dams. The stress-porewater coupling finite difference numerical analysis is performed for establishing the limit displacement for reservoir dam structures. It is developed a system that can estimate the time to reach the critical value by regression analysis using the measured datas.

  • This paper presents the results of investigation on tunnelling-induced ground surface settlement characteristics in water bearing ground using finite element (FE) stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. Fundamental interaction mechanism of ground and groundwater lowering was first examined and a number of influencing factors on the results of the coupled FE analysis were identified. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as rock type, thickness of soil layer, permeability of shotcrete lining, among others. The results indicate that the tunneling-induced groundwater drawdown results in a deeper and wider settlement trough than without groundwater drawdown, and that the Error function approach does not yield satisfactory result in predicting a settlement profile. The results of analysis are summarized so that the relationship between the settlement and the influencing factors can be identified.

  • Road subsidence, frequently occurring in urban areas, is caused by collapsing of surface layer due to underground cavities followed by a loss of soils. To better understand this phenomenon, the mechanism of cavity formation should be identified firstly. Two kinds of possible subsidence mechanisms were established through previous case studies and the numerical analyses based on Distinct Element Method were conducted for each of these mechanisms. It was confirmed that particle loss and surface settlement can develop differently depending on slit size, void ratio, and particle shape among the various factors influencing the road subsidence. The result demonstrated that the effects of varying cavity diameter and depth could be quantified as a damage chart.

  • In this study, the thermal-structural behavior of the combustor assembly of 200 kW micro gas turbine system was performed. The typical combustor assembly consists of a Liner, Inner & Outer Case, Burner and Nozzle ring, etc. There are some gaps and friction elements between the components to compensate for the different thermal expansions of various components. Therefore, the developed finite element model includes nonlinear elements. The boundary support conditions of the combustor assembly significantly affect the stress distribution due to the high temperature gradient. This paper deals with parametric studies to quantitatively determine the effects of the variation of the support conditions on the stress distribution and deformation of various components of combustor assembly. These results may be useful for the design of the combustor assembly.

  • In this study, laboratory test, in-situ vane shear test and piezocone penetration test in the study area were conducted to investigate the engineering characteristics of soft soils at Cheongra District, Songdo District in Incheon City, the west coast of Gyeonggi province, and Sihwa District in Ansan city. The correlations among compression index, and in-situ vane shear test, and cone resistance were obtained. The variations of liquid limit, plasticity index, water content and compression index with respect to depth exhibit strong similarity. This means that they have strong correlations, which can be used to evaluate the local characteristics of the study area. Thus, the correlations between compression index and physical properties were analysed to investigate the engineering characteristics of soft soil in the study area. The relationships between the measured piezocone factor by empirical methods, and undrained shear strength obtained by triaxial compression test or in-situ vane shear test were compared. It shows the significant correlation and piezocone factors, $N_{kT}$are suggested for the study area.

  • Self-weight consolidation test and soil property of dredged soil at Incheon habour route were analyzed to determine the initial dredging reclamation amount, reclamation depth, and estimating the required time of self-weight consolidation with calculation of the final planned height of dredging reclamation site. The moisture content, void ratio and ratio of volume change with elapsed time after throwing were estimated through Yano's empirical equation. As a result, there was a less variation in elements when fine-grained soil content was low as similarly to the behavior of coefficient of sedimentation-consolidation, Cs and the highest variation was shown at the fine-grained soil content of 50%. The retention ratio according to the fine grained soil content that could reinforce the comprehensive aspect of retention ratio for each particle size presented in the standard of estimate for reclamation construction work was calculated and presented using the calculated ratio of volume change.

  • Accurate prediction of consolidation behaviors of the soft ground improved by plastic board drains is not easy because the consolidation characteristics of the improved ground has not been fully elucidated yet. The shape of drains is one of the most important factors which affect the consolidation characteristics of the improved ground. In this paper, a series of model consolidation tests of soft clay ground improved by plastic board drain were carried out, in order to investigate the effect of both plastic board width and stress level on consolidation characteristics of the improved ground. As the results, behaviors of both settlement and excess pore pressure dissipation were elucidated. Also, the non-uniform distribution of water content in the model ground was obtained. Then, in order to investigate the effect of vertical drainage on the consolidation behavior in the model tests, the comparison between experimental consolidation behaviors and Barron's theoretical ones were carried out. As the results, it was elucidated that the consolidation behavior in the model tests was affected not only by radial drainage but also by vertical drainage.
