This study investigated the effects of naringin, and chitosan in rabbits' corneas. Naringin, a glycone of naringenin, is a widely distributed bioflavonoid in the grapefruit and citrus peel, and it has already been reported as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer agent. It has been used as a food preservatives and cosmetics. One of the natural preservatives, chitosan has also used in food preservatives, health drinks, and teas. Chitosan is distributed in the epithelium of crustacea, insects, and fungi. Naringin and chitosan have no harmful effects of cytotoxicity in the human body and they are recognized as an antibacterial for various forms of bacteria. The purpose of this study is to search for the ideal percentage of natural products to substitute the chemical preservatives occuring within the cornea and conjunctiva cytotoxicity and inflammations as wearing on soft contact lens. The present study compared the morphology of corneal epithelium and endothelium observed by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In vivo methods, We investigated the effects of natural preservatives on soft contact lens. We inserted 3-4 drops of the naringin and chitosan, directly on rabbits' corneas 4 times per a day during one week. After enucleation of cornea, morphorgical damages of the epithelium and endothelium were observed by LM and TEM. In view of ultrastructure, chitosan caused siginficant damage on the epithelium and endothelium of cornea. The damage of cells was higher in chitosan treated cornea than 0.01, 0.1, and 1% of naringin. The 1% of naringin also expressed cell damage seriously. The results suggest that the most important thing is to use the reasonable percentage of preservatives for contact lens solutions.

The eye movement of the eyeball's center of a rotation can represent with the rotation matrix $R_x$, $R_y$, $R_z$ due to a coordinate axis rotation transformation of Cartesian coordinate, and describes of an abduction, an adduction, an elevation, a depression, an intorsion, an extorsion in principle rotation six forms of the eye. The eye movement from primary eye position to tertiary eye position could be composed with the rotation matrix combination, and by the primary rotation of six and the secondary rotation of eight, could be represented with the extrocular muscle of six. The position of the cornea vertex point or pupil point due to the eye movement can describe to transform the rotation matrix of the cartesian coordinate to spherical coordinate$(r,{\theta},{\phi})$.

Recently, the population of people exploring High Mountain trekking or expedition is increasing as an increase in the backpackers. Many accidents occurring at High Mountain above 6,000 m are the results of snow blindness. The damage of cornea and/or retina is direct cause of snow blindness. The UV intensity increases on the hand, along with the altitude caused by decrease in the atmospheric pressure, on the other hand the reflections by bright snow at high mountain area. And it increases approximately 3 times and 4 times higher than the ground level at altitude of 4,000 m and 8,000 m, respectively. The use of sunglasses is more favorable than goggles for the protection of snow blindness at High Mountains. The eye frames that have high mechanical strength and the plastic lenses which can protect UV 100% are recommended. The attachable shielding pads are needed to prevent the incident UV light reflected or scattered from the gap between glasses frame and face. The sunglasses must have flexible and long temples to wind the ears adequately for the prevention of detachment during climbing and it is recommended that the metal frame to be coated with plastics to prevent the eye surroundings from frostbite.

We have developed a hand-held probe for an ophthalmic OCT system. The hand-held probe for imaging was designed to be compact and portable. The cornea and retinal images were acquired by replacing the objective lens at the front of the probe. To verify the performance of the hand-held OCT probe, we acquired two dimensional OCT image of the rat eye in vivo and reconstructed three dimensional rat eye rendering images. In vivo 3D OCT images were showed distinct structural information in the posterior and anterior chamber with minimal motion artifacts. Thereby, OCT imaging speed is suitable for an dynamic in vivo experiment.
n-Butyrate (n-BT A) increased the rate and number of infectious units produced in the in vitro reactivation of latent herpes simplex virus. While the mechanism of action of n-BT A is obscure, a continuous presence of n-BT A is necessary for its inductive effect.

As the security of personal information is becoming more important in mobile phones, we are starting to apply iris recognition technology to these devices. In conventional iris recognition, magnified iris images are required. For that, it has been necessary to use large magnified zoom & focus lens camera to capture images, but due to the requirement about low size and cost of mobile phones, the zoom & focus lens are difficult to be used. However, with rapid developments and multimedia convergence trends in mobile phones, more and more companies have built mega-pixel cameras into their mobile phones. These devices make it possible to capture a magnified iris image without zoom & focus lens. Although facial images are captured far away from the user using a mega-pixel camera, the captured iris region possesses sufficient pixel information for iris recognition. However, in this case, the eye region should be detected for accurate iris recognition in facial images. So, we propose a new fast iris detection method, which is appropriate for mobile phones based on corneal specular reflection. To detect specular reflection robustly, we propose the theoretical background of estimating the size and brightness of specular reflection based on eye, camera and illuminator models. In addition, we use the successive On/Off scheme of the illuminator to detect the optical/motion blurring and sunlight effect on input image. Experimental results show that total processing time(detecting iris region) is on average 65ms on a Samsung SCH-S2300 (with 150MHz ARM 9 CPU) mobile phone. The rate of correct iris detection is 99% (about indoor images) and 98.5% (about outdoor images).

Knowledge of morphological changes in eel larvae is very important for artificial rearing of eel larvae. In this study, we investigated the morphological structure of the head region and histological changes of the eye retina in artificially reared larvae at various stages and in glass eel just after metamorphosis. Structural changes were observed in the upper jaw (maxilla) and the lower jaw (mandible) after 100 dah (day after hatchery) and after metamorphosis. Teeth had degenerated by the time of completion of metamorphosis. Major histological changes observed in the eye retina were the formation of the outer plexiform layer and the outer nuclear layer from 100 dah larva and a change in the rod cell layer after metamorphosis. The cornea was not observed at 10 dah in the eel larva. More information is needed on the early developmental stages of eel larvae to enable mass production of glass eels. The results obtained in the present research will be useful when developing novel rearing programs for eel larvae.
Using both light and scanning electron microscopies, it was investigated on the visual cells as well as the eyes of Macropodus ocellatus (Pisces, Osphronemidae). This species had a circular lens and yellowish cornea. The eyes had $3.5{\pm}0.2mm$ which is $31.1{\pm}3.0%$ in a percentage of eye diameter relative to head length. The retina ($158.2{\pm}10.6{\mu}m$) was built of several layers, including the visual cell layer which consists of three types of cells: single cons ($27.8{\pm}1.6{\mu}m$) and equal double cone ($33.9{\pm}3.7{\mu}m$), and large rods ($57.3{\pm}1.3{\mu}m$). The visual cell layer then was classified into the correct pattern. All visual cells were clearly distinguished from two parts (inner and outer segments). The elongated rod cells were extend to the bottom of the retinal pigment epithelium. In scanning electron microscopy, the outer segment links to inner segment by so-called calyceal piles. The M. ocellatus single and double cones appearance form a flower-petal arrangement, which is a regular mosaic pattern that contains quadrilateral units by four double cones surrounding a single cone.
