The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes that family caregivers have experienced since using the Korean Long-Term Care Insurance(LTCI) system. In-depth interviews were conducted to determine how the services offered within the LTCI program had affected family caregiving and what changes they had incurred. Results from the qualitative content analysis show that the LTCI program significantly reduced the caregiving burden among family caregivers although burdens that family caregiver perceived varied greatly depending on the types of service that the family selected, and assigned family caregivers different identities and diverse roles(i.e., service user, family caregiver, certified care provider) depending on the service they use. The phenomenon of 'certified family care provider', which was not an intention of LTCI, demonstrates the practical need of elderly persons who require both care and the comfort of family and economic status of the family. Despite the positive impact of the LTCI policy on the family caregivers' burden and family relationship, the current LTCI system should be modified in order to better meet the needs of beneficiaries and their family caregivers.
The model of family decision-making in child protection has been widely discussed and adopted in many countries. The purpose of this study was to introduce the model and, then, investigate whether this process is applicable in child care and protection services in Korea. The main goal in the study has been to explore the philosophical and practical foundations of the family involvement approach in decision-making and describe the international applications of the model. Family group conferencing, originally developed and enacted in New Zealand, has been critically examined. The potential contributions of the study may include seeking a more effective intervention for child protection through determining whether the model is appropriate or desirable in issues of philosophy, practice and policy within the Korean culture.
This study is about the relationship between traditional familism and welfare consciousness in Korea. Traditional familism is known as the value that most Koreans share with, and the impeding value for welfare program development. Strong family solidarity and family-centered perception among Koreans influences other social values and ideology. Especially, care of the family members is understood as a family duty and responsibility. And this inhibits Koreans to develop welfare consciousness and further to develop welfare programs at the governmental level. Thus, this study purposes to explore the relationship between the two. The sample of 1,131 men and women was selected in Seoul area. As a result, traditional familism is found to be quite influential to welfare consciousness among Koreans. First, perception of welfare institution is strongly related with welfare consciousness. The respondents in high familism group showed low welfare consciousness. Second, state-friendly welfare responsibility was shown low in the group of high familism for the aged and youth. In the same context, for the disabled and the unemployed, state-friendly welfare responsibility was shown high in the group of low familism. Lastly, the relationship between familism and the welfare need was not apparent. Such results make possible to conclude that traditional familism among Korean is still influential to welfare consciousness and welfare ideology. However, although this conclusion should not be used for an excuse to avoid state responsibility but used as a tool to develop a welfare model to strengthen family function as one solid family.
In this study, we investigate the current status of family friendly management and determinants of its level. We choose measures about family friendly management and use their results from ESG evaluation model by Korea Corporate Governance Service. We find that firms with larger size, lower leverage and higher firm value are more family friendly. And in contrast to previous studies, firms are more family friendly when they have less women to total employees. But firms with higher largest shareholder holdings are less family friendly. These results show that listed firms in Korea should be more family friendly considering their level of woman employment. Also the interest and support from top management are needed for activating family friendly management, but largest shareholder of korean firms are not active yet.
The purpose of this study is to understand why female labor force participation rates decline in early times after their marriage. Data were derived from the 4th(2001) to 9th(2006) Korea Labor & Income Panel Study. 194 Korean married women in twenties and thirties who had a job before marriage were analyzed. Survival analysis was used to explore the first labor force exit of married women longitudinally. The major findings are as follows. First, nearly half of them went away from labor market in the first 3 years after marriage. Second, child birth was the most significant factor in predicting women's labor force exit. Married women's employment discontinuity tend to be lowered after child birth, with working hour decreasing, and with the number of available family-friendly policies increasing. Married women's income encouraged them to hold on their career, though husband's income and household income were not significant. Third, married women tended to leave their job before giving birth. Women who remained in the labor market at child birth or until a year after birth were inclined to continue their job thereafter. Fourth, maternity leave and childcare leave diminished the probability of employment discontinuity. Many working wives could not use a maternity leave or childcare leave. This study shows married women usually underwent labor market exit in their newly married time. They cannot help facing conflict between the role of mother's and a worker's. Family-friendly policies could encourage working wives to rear child and continue work at the same time. The findings of this study could serve as fundamental material for further studies and would be a key to find effective solution for problematic issues on reconciling work and family.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of long-term care insurance(macro-system) on family relationship(micro-system)s' change based on ecosystems theory. Data come from the second(2007) and the fourth(2009) Korean Welfare Panel Study(KWPS). Experimental group is the beneficiary using long-term care insurance and the member of household in their households, and control group is the non-beneficiary not using long-term care insurance and the member of household in their households. The main findings of difference-in-difference model analysis are as follows. First, the ecosystems theory is a theory examining the correlation between long-term care insurance and family relationship. Second, the effects of long-term care insurance is not income effect but independent effect. This result shows that the meaning of family has faded away and family relationship has been weaken and that long-term care insurance has not complete characteristics as a social insurance. Thus, system reforms of long-term care insurance is highly needed for system comprehensiveness, coverage, adequacy, and service accessibility and is changed into family-friendly social policy.
The major purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the long-term care insurance program. In order to estimate the impact of policy accurately, certain bias which might hamper the validity of this study has been removed by Propensity Score Matching(PSM) and Double Difference(DD) method from the semi-experimental design. To study the effects of long-term care insurance on the elderly and their family members as social outcome variable sand the quality of life of their family and satisfaction in family relationships, the third and fourth waves of Korea Welfare Panel are used to match experimental and comparative groups by the propensity score matching. Then, DD method, using the panel fixed effects model, is applied to estimate the differences of those groups'treatment effects before and after the policy implementation. As a result, it was found that the Quality of life on the elderly and their family members is statistically meaningless, while the satisfaction in family relationships has much increased after the policy implementation. The result has a limitation in that this evaluation is performed at the point when the long-term insurance program has not been ripened enough. However, there is an important implication on the significance of realizing the main goal of the long-term care insurance to improve the quality of life of the elderly and their family members and as for the potentiality of further system improvements.

A 5 days working system and a 6 days working system will be put in force at a food service consumption behavior of company workers. As a 5 days working system have adopted company, which the number of employee is more than 50, from July 1, 2007. The purpose of this paper is to study the In food service consumption behavior of company workers. There is no doubt that it is only way of surviving In current society to analyze the change of social situation and actively cope with the development. Especially, in the field of restaurant industries, they have to be equipped with a great store of experience and skill, theory and practical business, pertinent and rapid disposal. Consequently, it is very important to know the objective and practical knowledge for the restaurant industries trend by having a through grasp of the need of consumer and their propensity to consume. In order to study motives of eating-out and restaurants selection, office workers, who live in the national capital region, are interviewed. The period of interview is from Oct 1 to Nov 20, 2007. According to the result of interview, The most workers prefer to eating-out on week with family and friends. But family is eating-out the more preference to weekend compare to friends. And it is deduced that restaurant near tourist resorts or outside the city rather than in downtown will be prosperous with this result. That is to say, workers go out to eat delicious food regardless of traffic problem and distance, with the increase of national income and the car holding. This paper is worthy of notice in terms of trying to find the relevance between the working system and the restaurant industries development. In after research, I expect the more synthetic and deeper study should be made though the more technical methods.
The main purpose of this study is to examine the rewards for "Family Care" from the Japanese Long-Term care policy, to investigate the effects of "The commodification of Family Care" after the introduction of "The Long-Term Care Insurance", and to find out the institutionalization of reward system for "Family Care". First of all, the socialization of "The Long-Term Care" is redefined to be the commodification of family care in this study. Based on this definition, the commodification of family care and the government's involvement are analyzed in conjunction with considering the role of family in the process of Long-Term Care supply, the social evaluation for family care, the family carers' home environment and the position in the labor market. In result, the commodification structure of family care in the Japanese Long-Term Care policy is found, and it helps to understand the reason why the cash payments was just partially introduced.
The purpose of this study is first to examine the tendency in what kind of activities and difficulties are carried out as family rituals. Second, the study was to investigate the effects of family rituals on family strengths. To accomplish study purpose, 216 married women/men were asked to fill out the survey questionnaires. For analysis of data, SPSS Win program was used to perform Frequency Analysis, MANOVA, Multiple Regression Analysis. (1)In the dinner rituals, it turned out that a main activity was 'serving homemade food' and a majority of subjects had a difficult time establishing a regular ritual due to 'their busy schedule at work'. In the weekend leisure rituals, a main activity was 'paying a visit to suburbs' and a main difficulty was 'lack of mutually available time for all family members'. In the birthday rituals, a main activity was 'preparing a birthday cake' and a main difficulty was 'because family members forget their birthday'. In the wedding anniversary rituals, women's main activity was 'eating out' and men's main activity was 'give a partner to a flower or gift', and a main difficulty was 'because family members forget their birthday' and 'because it was not a wanted celebration'. Finally, in the traditional rituals, women's main difficulty was 'partner doesn't understand my difficulties' and men's main difficulty was 'trouble human relationships with relatives'. (2)The family rituals were significantly different according to the age. (3)'Closeness of family members', 'task performance and problem solving skills' and 'sharing a value system of family members' were affected by the family rituals.
