Comparison of PSA and VSA processes for air separation (공기 분리를 위한 O2 PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption)공정과 VSA (Vacuum Swing Adsorption) 공정의 설게 및 성능 비교)

  • PSA and VSA processes have been used broadly to produce oxygen from ambient air in midium- or small-sized plants. PSA and VSA processes are the separation methods which use difference of amount adsorbed as pressure is changed periodically, but they have the differences in pressurization and regeneration. In this study, the performance of 6-step PSA process was compared with that of 5-step VSA process with respect to purity and recovery. In addition, the effects of each step (pressurization step, adsorption step, and pressure equalization step) on purity and recovery were investigated. As a result, the VSA process using zeolite 10X showed better performance than the zeolite 5A PSA and zeolite 13X VSA process in comparison with purity, recovery and productivity. And it was enough to apply the vacuum pressure of 200 torr for the VSA, which produced over 90% oxygen with 70% recovery.

Solid $CO_2$ sorbents and WGS catalyst for pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture (연소전 $CO_2$ 회수를 위한 고체 흡수제 및 WGS 촉매 특성 평가)

  • 석탄가스화복합발전(IGCC: Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle)의 고온 고압 합성가스로부터 $CO_2$를 저비용으로 포집하기 위한 연소전 포집 기술 중 유동층 촉진수성가스전환(SEWGS) 공정이 제안되어 연구개발 중에 있다. 연소전 $CO_2$ 포집을 위한 SEWGS 공정은 동일한 2탑 순환 유동층 반응기에서 고온 고압의 합성가스($H_2$, CO)를 유동층 WGS 촉매를 사용하여 CO를 $CO_2$로 전환하는 동시에 전환반응으로 생성된 $CO_2$를 흡수제를 이용하여 포집하는 기술이다. 본 연구는 $CO_2$ 회수와 WGS 반응이 동시에 이루어지는 공정에 적용 가능한 건식 재생 흡수제 및 유동층 WGS 촉매 개발을 목표로 $CO_2$ 흡수제(P Series) 및 WGS 촉매(PC Series) 조성을 제안하고 분무건조기를 이용하여 6~8kg/batch로 성형 제조하였다. 제조된 $CO_2$ 흡수제 및 촉매의 특성 평가 결과 내마모도(Attrition resistance)를 포함한 물리적 특성이 유동층 공정의 요구조건을 만족하는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 또한, 모사 석탄 합성가스를 이용하여 20bar, $200^{\circ}C$ 흡수/$400^{\circ}C$ 재생 조건에서 열중량 분석기(TGA) 및 가압 유동층(Fluidized-bed) 반응기를 통한 흡수제의 $CO_2$ 흡수능 평가를 수행하였다. 그 결과 내마모도(AI) 3% 이하로 기계적 강도가 우수하며, $CO_2$ 흡수능 17.6 wt%(TGA) 및 11wt%(가압 유동층)를 나타냈다. 유동층 WGS 특성 평가 결과 내마모도가 7~35%로 우수하였고, CO 전환율은 $200^{\circ}C$에서 80% 이상으로, 유동층 SEWGS 공정에 적용 가능한 특성을 확인하였다.

고온가압소결한 SiCf/SiC 복합체에서 보호층으로써의 SiC 층이 기계적 물성에 미치는 영향

  • 고온가압소결으로 제조된 SiCf/SiC 복합체는 부식과 침식에 강하고 우수한 열적 성질과 고온에서의 높은 기계적 강도를 유지하는 장점을 가진 복합체다. 복합체의 파괴인성은 섬유와 기지 사이에 존재하는 열분해탄소 (PyC) 계면층에 의해 큰 영향을 받는데, 고온가압소결중 첨가되는 소결조제 ($Y_2O_3$, MgO, $Al_2O_3$)와 반응하여 계면이 손상되어 복합체의 기계적 특성치가 낮아지는 결과를 보였다. 본 연구에서는 계면의 손상을 보호하고자 PyC 계면상 위에 SiC 층을 증착하였는데 계면층과 SiC 층의 증착은 화학기상 증착법(CVD)을, 기지채움 공정은 전기영동법(EPD)과 고온가압소결방법(Hot Pressing)을 이용하여 복합체를 제조하였다. Tyranno-SA 섬유에 소스가스인 메탄을 열분해 하여 200nm 두께로 PyC 계면상을 증착하고, 두께를 달리하여 보호층으로써의 SiC 층을 single 과 double layer로 증착하였다. SiC 나노분말과 소결 첨가제인 $Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO를 첨가한 슬러리를 전기영동법(EPD)을 이용하여 섬유내부에 슬러리를 함침시켰고, 이러한 프리폼을 $1750^{\circ}C$/20MPa의 조건으로 고온 가압소결 하여 $SiC_f$/SiC 복합체를 제조하였다. 이렇게 single layer와 double layer로 제조된 $SiC_f$/SiC 복합체에 대해 밀도와 미세구조를 관찰하였고, 기계적 특성을 비교하여 보호층으로써의 SiC 증착효과를 고찰하고자 하였다.

  • Various ceramic particulate such as TiC, $TiB_2$, $Al_2O_3$ reinforced SUS431 matrix composites were successfully fabricated by a novel liquid pressing infiltration process. Microstructures of the SUS431 composite were analyzed to determine manufacturability of composites. $Al_2O_3$-SUS431 composite had lots of defects due to poor wettability between the $Al_2O_3$ and steel matrix. On the other hand, TiC was uniformly dispersed in the SUS431 matrix than $TiB_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ due to good wettability and interfacial properties.

  • Pressurized MF membranes are used to remove suspended solid and colloidal materials of wastewater treatment plant effluent as the pretreatment of RO in reuse water production process. Membrane operation data and pollutants removal efficiency are investigated using 100 t/d scale pilot plant in J wastewater treatment plant located in Namyangju city. 40 LMH flux of pressurized MF membrane are obtained in various turbidity and temperature condition. Coagulation of dissolved organic enables flux improvement of MF from 40 LMH to 60 LMH. Pressure drop of 1st RO elements rapidly increased after long-term pause, which is because the complex contamination of organic matter and ionic substances of pluming systems.

  • Titanium carbide (TiC) reinforced SKD11 matrix composites were successfully fabricated by a novel liquid pressing infiltration process. Microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear characteristics of the fabricated 60 vol% TiC-SKD11 composite are analyzed. The composite exhibits superior mechanical properties, such as hardness and compressive strength with 24% lower density as compared with SKD11. Improved wear resistance of the TiC-SKD11 composite originates from uniformly reinforced TiC having strong interfacial bonding strength between TiC/SKD11 interface.

  • Titanium carbide (TiC) reinforced Inconel 718 matrix composites were successfully fabricated by a novel liquid pressing infiltration process. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated 55 vol% TiC-Inconel 718 composite are analyzed. The composite exhibits superior mechanical properties, such as hardness and compressive strength as compared with Inconel 718. It is believed that Mo and Nb, which are alloying elements in the matrix, diffuse and solidify into the TiC reinforcement, resulting in generation of core-rim structure with excellent interfacial properties.

  • Global efforts are focused on achieving carbon neutrality due to the increases in the levels of greenhouse gases. Moreover, the greenhouse gases generated from the disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) are the primary sources of emissions in South Korea. In this study, we conducted the biological conversion of syngas (CO, H2, and CO2) generated from MSW gasification. The MSW-derived syngas was used as a feed source for cultivating Eubacterium limosum KIST612, and pressurization was employed to enhance gas solubility in culture broth. However, the pH of the medium decreased owing to the pressurization because of the CO2 in the syngas and the cultivation-associated organic acid production. The replacement of conventional HEPES buffer with a phosphate buffer led to an approximately 2.5-fold increase in acetic acid concentration. Furthermore, compared with the control group, the pressurized reactor exhibited a maximum 8.28-fold increase in the CO consumption rate and a 3.8-fold increase in the H2 consumption rate.
