  • When explosives explode in water, the effect of post-explosion gas after explosion should be considered, unlike explosion in the air. During explosion in water, the propagation velocity of the explosion pressure is faster than when the explosion occurs in the air. The generated gas is diffused and trapped in the form of bubbles by water before the energy is dissipated. At this time, the bubble expands and contracts, creating a shock wave. In order to investigate this series of phenomena, a cylinder type steel water tank capable of observing the interior was fabricated and explosion experiments were conducted. In this study, a small amount of shell-free pentolite was exploded in water. Experiments were performed to observe the behavior of the generated gas bubble as well as to measure the shock wave generated. We designed the experimental method of underwater explosion and examined the results.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of the Deflagration to Detonation Transition (DDT) of flame acceleration by a shock wave in combustible gas mixture. A model consisting of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations is used. The effects of viscosity, thermal conduction, species diffusion, and chemical reactions are included. Using this model, the generation of hot spots by repeated shock and flame interaction in front and back of flame and the change of detonation occurrence by various shock intensities (Ms=1.1, 1.2, 1.3) are studied. The simulations show that as the incident shock intensity increases, the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability becomes stronger and DDT occurrence time is reduced.

  • The plant is an important facility as a infrastructure, and ensuring safety against possible accidents such as gas leaks and explosions must be considered in the design. However, there is little study on explosion pressure in plants for reasons such as economic feasibility, and overpressure data on this field is insufficient. In this study, an experimental design plan considering the explosion scenario that may occur in the plant was presented, and the explosion pressure was confirmed through an explosion experiment. Hydrogen-methane mixed gas was used as a combustible material, and the effect of confinement and congestion on overpressure was studied. The effect of overlapping pressure waves during deflagration and the turbulence effect by congested pipes are discussed. The results of this study can be used as input data in various safety designs.

  • A new novel Whipping Factor is proposed as a measure of the ship damage potential due to an underwater explosion bubble pulse. The factor was derived from the relationships among the charge weight, its depth and the fluid acceleration due to pulsating gas bubble. From the whipping response analyses for three uniform Timoshenko beams with similar characteristics of real naval surface ships, we have confirmed the maximum bending moment responses of beams due to whipping are almost same if the applied whipping factor is constant regardless of the charge weights and depths, which could validate the proposed whipping factor.

  • A study on the vented gas explosion characteristics were carried out with the liquified petroleum gas(LPG) which is used in domestics and industries fuel. To evaluate a damage by gas explosion and to predict a explosion hazards, a series of experiment have been performed in the regular hexahedron vessel of 270${\iota}$. A side of the vessel was made to setting a polyester diaphragm which was ruptured by explosion to simulate an accidental explosion which ruptured the window by explosion. Experimental parameters were LPG concentration, ignition position, venting area, a strength of diaphragm which was ruptured and distances from venting, Experimental results showed that vented gas explosion pressure was more affected by the diaphragm strength than the gas concentration, and the vented gas explosion pressure and blast wave pressure was increased with decreasing the venting area and increasing the strength of diaphragm. In this research we can find that a damage by vented explosion at the outside can be larger than the inside by blast wave pressure near the venting.

  • As the scale of explosions diversifies along with the expansion of gas handling and storage facilities, studies on explosion-proof facilities in preparation for accidents is being actively conducted. The gastight door blocks the expansion pressure caused by blast waves or internal fires, and at the same time protects the personnel and equipment inside. For gastight doors, the regulations related to explosion-proof design are not clearly presented, and studies on the explosion pressure resistance performance evaluation of the facility are insufficient. In this study, the gastight door was modeled in a 3D shape with reference to the regulation ASTM regarding the gastight door standard. Afterwards, evaluation for blast-resistant performance of gastight door using Numerical simulation was evaluated by using ANSYS Explicit Dynamics to compare the deformation.

  • The geostationary satellite COMS is going to be launched in 2010, and, in the series of test, there are some high-pressure tests concerning the vessel tank filled with helium gas of hundreds atmospheric pressure. In this paper, authors evaluates risk associated with accidental rupture of the test system. Two possible scenarios are considered: 1) the 310-bar helium tank ruptures at the center of the acoustic chamber, and 2) the 116-bar reduced-pressure helium tank ruptures in the test room shielded by bullet-proof glasses. Using the theory of blast wave propagation and computational simulation, the dynamics of wave reflected in a confined space is investigated for highly complex unsteady flow physics.

  • The gas explosions in offshore installations are known to be very severe according to its geometry and environmental conditions such as leak locations and wind directions, and a dynamic response of structures due to blast loads depends on the load profile. Therefore, a parametric study has to be conducted to investigate the effects of the dynamic response of structural members subjected to various types of load shapes. To do so, a series of CFD analyses was performed using a full-scale FPSO topside model including detail parts of pipes and equipments, and the time history data of the blast loads at monitor points and panels were obtained by the analyses. In this paper, we focus on a structural dynamic response subjected to blast loads changing the magnitude of positive/negative phase pressure and time duration. From the results of linear/nonlinear transient analyses using single degree of freedom(SDOF) and multi-degree-of freedom(MDOF) systems, it was observed that dynamic responses of structures were significantly influenced by the magnitude of positive and negative phase pressures and negative time duration.
