Spray Characteristics of High Pressure Fan Spray Injector with Various Crossflow Speed (횡방향 유속 변화에 따른 고압 가솔린 팬형 인젝터의 분무특성)

  • The direct injection into the cylinders has been regarded as a way of the reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The spray produced from the injector of DIS(Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine is of paramount importance in DISI engines. Fan-spray injector as well as swirl-spray injector was developed and utilized to the DISI engines. The interaction between air flow and fuel spray was investigated in a steady flow system embodied in a wind tunnel to simulate the variety of flow inside the cylinder of the DISI engineer. The direct Mie scattered images presented the macroscopic view of the liquid spray fields interacted with crossflow. Particle sizes of fuel droplets were measured with phase Doppler anemometer(PDA) system. A faster cross-flow field made SMD larger and $D_{10}$ smaller. The experiments show the interaction of air flow field and the fuel spray field of fan-spray. The results can be utilized to construct the data-base for the spray and fuel-air mixing mechanism as a function of the flow characteristics.

Effect of ambient conditions on the spray development and atomization characteristics of a gasoline spray injected through a direct injection system (분위기 조건이 직접 분사식 가솔린 분무의 발달 과정 및 미립화 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper presents the effects of ambient pressure on atomization characteristics of high-Pressure injector in a direct injection gasoline engine both experimentally and numerically. The atomization characteristics such as mean droplet size, mean velocity, and velocity distribution were measured by phase Doppler particle analyzer. The spray development, spray penetration, and global spray structure were visualized using a shadowgraph technique. In order to investigate the atomization process numerically, the LISA-DDB hybrid model was utilized. This breakup model assumes that the primary breakup occurs when the amplitude of the unstable waves is equal to the radius of the ligament of liquid sheet near the nozzle and the droplet deformation induces the secondary breakup. The results provide the effect of ambient pressure on the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors such as spray development, spray penetration, mean droplet size, and mean velocity distribution. It is also revealed that the accuracy of prediction of LISA-DDB hybrid model is pretty good in terms of spray developing process, spray tip penetration, and SMD distribution.

  • Several efforts to meet the exhaust gas regulation have been undertaken by many researchers in recent years. Main researches are on development of design techniques of intake port and combustion chamber, atomisation of fuel and precise control of air-fuel ratio, post-treatment of exhaust gas and so on. Engine technology is changed from PFI to GDI to correspond with exhaust gas regulation. GDI technique makes it possible to preserve lean air-fuel ratio and control accurate air-fuel ratio. Nevertheless, It is not cleared that information of spray characteristics and atomization process are very dependent on fluctuation of pressure and change of temperature in intake stroke. In this study, a constant volume combustion chamber is manufactured to investigate various fluctuations of in-cylinder pressure for injection duration. It is taken photographs of injection process of conventional GDI injector using PMAS. Then, it was verified experimently that ambient conditions as temperature and pressure of combustion chamber have effects on process of spray growth and atomization of fuel.

  • The objective of this study is to examine a DI(Direct Injection) gasoline spray development process under different ambient pressures using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). fuel spray experiments were performed within a constant volume chamber. The spray structure, velocity maps, velocity and vorticity contours were obtained to investigate its spray characteristics. It was found that higher ambient pressure has a significant effect on radial growth of the spray. The position which has a maximum velocity moved from the spray edge to the spray center as ambient pressure was increased. Higher ambient pressure moved a maximum vorticity position upward of the spray.

Average Droplet Size Distribution of a GDI Spray by Simultaneous Fluorescence/Scattering Image Technique (형과/산란광 동시 측정에 의한 GDI 분무의 평균 입경 분포에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the average droplet size distributions of a GDI spray by simultaneous fluorescence/scattering image technique. GDI engine is recently very popular because of high engine efficiency and low emissions. However, the injectors must have good spray characteristics because the fuel is directly injected into the cylinder. The fuel mixtures used in this study were 2% of fluorobenzene, 9% of DEMA(diethyl-methyl-amine) and 89% of hexane by volume. The system for obtaining 2-D fluorescence/scattering images of fuel spray was constituted of a laser sheet, a doubling prism, optical filters, and an ICCD camera. Using the ratio of the fluorescence to the scattering intensities, SMD distributions were obtained. SMD measured by the technique was compared with that obtained by PDA. It was found that average droplet size was bigger at spray center in the early stage of injection and at the outer periphery of the spray in the late stage of injection.
