  • The reusable, low-cost launch vehicle development trend in the recent launch vehicle market is being subdivided into several ways, and the throttleable engine is one of them. Plus, several nations have selected methane as a next-generation propellant due to its cleanness. In this research, a throttleable pintle injector using gas methane and liquid oxygen as propellants was developed, followed by its spray and combustion characteristics analysis, including high pressure cold and hot tests. The designed throttleable pintle injector has a double sleeve structure, and its tightness and functionality are confirmed through repetitive atmospheric, high-pressure cold tests, and hot tests. Though some design errors were discovered and a low throttling level was unable to be achieved in the combustion test.

  • In this study, the surface heat transfer coefficient of the 3D model of a thruster regulator in the high temperature and high pressure environment was estimated using the commercial CFD code. The thermal barrier coating (TBC) on the surface of the thruster regulator was modeled and the effect of the thickness of the TBC on the temperature of the thruster regulator was investigated. The thickness of the TBC was varied from $100{\mu}m$ to $500{\mu}m$. Results showed that the temperature of the surface and the inside the thruster regulator was lower for the thicker TBC case.

  • Experimental and computational study for steady-state pintle driven nozzle throat flow are carried out by changing four pintle shape. Results show that thruster performance is influenced by pintle shape greatly. This attributes to the distorted throat area and chamber pressure change as the pintle shape and its penetration.

  • A nonlinear pressure controller to actively regulate the thrust of a solid propulsion system is presented. To compensate for the parametric uncertainties with respect to the chamber pressure induced by changing nozzle throat area, Lyapunov-based parameter adaptation method has been applied. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method, the experiments were carried out using the cold gas test equipment that can simulate the operating environment of variable thrust solid propulsion system. The experiment results show that the nonlinear pressure controller has better performance than conventional P and PI controller.

  • Thrust throttling in a liquid rocket engine can be implemented via several ways such as high pressure drop injector, dual manifold, multiple chamber, pintle injector, and gas injection. Thrust throttling using gas injection controls thrust by usually injecting inert gas into propellant through an aerator to reduce the propellant's bulk density. In this study, the outside-in aerator was used in the propellant line to create two phase flow. Closed-type, open-type, and screw-type bi-swirl coaxial injectors were utilized for investigating throttling characteristics such as pressure drop, mixture density, and discharge coefficient according to gas-liquid mass ratio.

  • A Discrete continuation Method/homotopy approaches are studied for energy/fuel optimal low thrust Earth escape trajectory by solving a two point boundary value problem(TPBVP). Recently, maneuvers using low thrust propulsion system have been identified as emerging technologies. The low thruster is considered as the main actuator for orbit maneuvers. The cost function consists of a energy/fuel consumption function, and constraints are position and velocity vectors at the terminal escape point. Solving the minimum energy/fuel problem directly is not an easy task, so we adopt the homotopy analysis. Using a solution of the minimum energy, which is solved by discrete continuation method, we obtain the solution of the minimum fuel problem.

  • Thrust variation is an essential parameter in a space mission such as landing on an atmosphereless planet or docking a spacecraft. In order to achieve the thrust variation control, using throttleable injector is a representative and general method. A dual-manifold injector, one of throttleable injectors, was used to control mass flow rate. Five kinds of injectors were designed and investigated in order to compare the spray characteristics of the dual-manifold injector with various tangential entries. Spray angles and patterns were measured to determine external flow characteristics and film thicknesses were measured in order to investigate the internal flow patterns.

  • An investigation of the thrust vectoring nozzle which can be applied to the supersonic variable exhaust system was performed. The maximum mach number of the model aircraft is 1.8 and mission radius is about 400Nm. The cycle analysis are performed at each operating regime of the aircraft and the specifications of the thrust vectoring nozzle were developed. Based upon the requirement of the thrust vectoring nozzle, two dimensional thrust vectoring nozzle were designed and flow analysis was conducted by deflection of the pitch and yaw angle.

  • Variable area nozzle, where both throat and exit area vary, is required for optimal expansion and optimal nozzle shape upon operation of after-burner. Steady-state and transient analyses are carried out for each condition with and without afterburner operation and as a function of the location of the nozzle flap. Effects of that nozzle displacement on flow and thrust characteristics are analyzed from numerical results. With variable area nozzle adopted, the combustion field is variable in time, leading to periodically variable thrust. For off-design conditions, flow separation shows up due to over expansion at the flap tips and shock wave does in the nozzle due to under expansion. The undesirable phenomena can be solved by control of variable area nozzle.
