  • In this study, strength, stiffness and confinement effect with stress-strain and stress-volumetric strain curves for improved uniaxial compressive behavior of RC circular columns laterally confined with prestressing aramid fiber strap were experimentally investigated. The test variables were the specimens with or without axial reinforcing bar and the number and spacing of strap, prestressing level, the types of reinforcing fiber (CFS, GFS). As a result, the failure type of the columns was very stable and strength increase rate was about 73% comparison with the general RC columns. Moreover, the strain increase rate is very small and the axial displacement confinement effect was very effective compared with existry methods (CFS, GFS), the initial and final lateral confinement effect was excellent.

  • Stone column or granular compaction pile have been used in widely during the several decades as a technique to reinforce soft cohesive soils and increase bearing capacity, accelerate consolidation settlement of the foundation soil. The bearing capacity of the granular compaction pile is governed mainly by the lateral confining pressure mobilized in the native soft soil to restrain bulging collapse of the granular pile. Therefore, the technique becomes unfeasible in soft, compressible clayey soils that do not provide sufficient lateral confinement. This paper presents the main results of numerical study of granular compaction pile which is partly mixed with lean concrete. 3D finite element analyses are performed with composite reinforced foundations by both granular compaction pile and partly mixed granular compaction pile with lean-mixed concrete. Finally, a regression formula for calculating settlement reduction coefficients is proposed in this study by using numerical analysis results and applicability of the proposed method is identified by a series of parametric study about settlement reduction coefficients.

  • The interest in the dynamic properties of soils has increased strongly because of earthquake, heavy traffic, and foundations undergo high amplitude of vibrations. Most of soils in Korean peninsula are composed of granite soils, especially the decomposed mudstone soils are widely spread in Pohang areas, Kyong-buk province. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the dynamic properties of these types of soils. The most important soil parameters under dynamic loadings are shear modulus and material dampings. Furthermore, few definitive data exist that can evaluate the behavior of unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils under dynamic loading conditions. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the shear modulus and damping ratio due to a surface tension for the unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils under low and high strain amplitude. For this purpose, the resonant column test and the cyclic triaxial test were performed. Test results and data have shown that the optimum saturated degree of decomposed mudstone soils under low and strain amplitude is $32{\sim}37%$ which is higher than that of decomposed granite due to the amount of fine particles as well as the type and proportion of chief rock-forming minerals.

  • Mechanical properties of steel-concrete interface were evaluated on the basis of experimental observations. The properties included bond strength, unbounded and bonded friction angles, residual level of friction angle, mode I fracture energy, mode II bonded fracture energy and unbonded slip-friction energy under different levels of normal stress, and shape parameters to define geometrical shape of failure envelope. For this purpose, a typical type of constitutive model of describing steel-concrete interface behavior was presented based on a hyperbolic three-parameter Mohr-Coulomb type failure criterion. The constitutive model depicts the strong dependency of interface behavior on bonding condition of interface, bonded or unbounded. Values of the interface parameters were determined through interpretation of experimental results, geometry of failure envelope and sensitivity analysis. Nonlinear finite element analysis that incorporates steel-concrete interface as well as material nonlinearities of concrete and steel were performed to predict the experimental results.

  • In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests were performed to evaluate the effects of clays mixed into compaction piles due to confining stress of ground on consolidation promoting. For the tests, various compaction piles such as SCP, GCP, and RAPP (Recycled-Aggregate Porous concrete Pile) were used. The ground condition was simulated at 50% and 100% of degree of consolidation. Also, confining stresses were applied to the composite ground corresponding to those of 5m depth. The amount of mixed clays into each compaction pile were estimated by measuring the drainage from the saturated compaction piles. From the test result, it was shown that the drainage area of compaction pile was changing according to the consolidation condition. GCP showed the most change of drainage area as it has relatively large void ratio; however, the amount of change was decreased by progressing consolidation of ground.

  • In this study, the change in hydraulic conductivity according to the changes in the contact area, aperture, confining pressure and temperature was observed to improve the reliability of the analysis of underground water flow. Also, the mechanical and thermal properties of domestic crystalline rocks in a great depth were obtained. It was found that the averaged intial aperture ranged from 544.33${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 898.62${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and it followed a log-normal distribution. The hydraulic conductivity decreased with the increase of normal stress on the fracture surface and the hydraulic conductivity decreased as temperature increased. The change in hydraulic conductivity was strongly correlated with the change in contact area. It was verified by experiments that hydraulic conductivity was inversely proportional to the contact area. The measured mechanical and thermal properties were very close to the existing typical properties of domestic granites.

  • For geotechnical design in practice, soils are, in general, assumed to behave as a linear elastic or perfect plastic material. More realistic geotechnical design, however, should take into account various factors that affect soil behavior in the field, such as non-linearity of stress-strain response, stress history, and water content. In this study, a series of laboratory tests including triaxial and resonant column tests were peformed with sands of various silt contents, relative densities, stress states, OCR and water contents. This aims at investigating effects of various factors that affect strength and stiffness of sands. From the results in this study, it is found that the effect of OCR is significant for the intermediate stress-strain range from the initial to failure, while it may be ignored for the initial stiffness and peak strength. For the effect of water content, it is observed that the initial elastic modulus decreases with increasing water content at lower confining stress and relative density At higher confining stresses, the effect of water content Is found to become small.

  • Recently, EPS which has unit weight of only 20~30kg/m3, is used for acquiring the safety of settlement and bearing capacity, In Korea, EPS was first used in 1993 as backfill material for abutment that was constructed on soft ground in Inchon. Since then EPS has been used increasingly as backfill material. However, adequate modelling has not yet been proposed for the prediction of the behavior of EPS. Only it's design strength was proposed as the results of unconfined strength and creep test. Accordingly this paper executed triaxial compression test on EPS with various density and confining pressure. Through the analysis of test data the behavior of EPS for strainstress, tangential modulus and poisson's ratio can be expressed in functions with parameters of density and confining pressure of EPS. From these results, this paper proposed a nonliner model describing the behavior of EPS.

  • The simulation of the field dynamic soil properties for soil modeling in the centrifuge test is important. In this study, the process of soil modeling based on the shear wave velocity profile is developed. From the resonant column test in each confining pressure, the shear wave velocity profile is expected and the modeling condition is determined by comparing it with that in the field. During the dynamic centrifuge test, the bender element test is performed for measuring the in-flight shear wave velocity profile, and the applicability of the proposed method was verified. This modeling method is applied to the centrifuge test of the Hualien Large-Scale Seismic test.
