  • Recently, many accidents occur frequently because sprinklers aren't installed or don't work right when there are outbreak of fire in houses and aggregate buildings. Therefore, they can result in damage for humans and loss of property. Sprinklers are the most appropriate which can extinguish buildings' fire in the initial stages. Through lack of legal system, in domestic cases, sprinklers cannot operate their inherent performance. Domestic standard simply classifies installation objects according to types of business and forms of buildings, also divides into uses and floors of buildings. Especially it only regulates that sprinklers must be installed every floors in particular fire buildings that have more than eleven floors. While it doesn't need to install sprinklers below ten floors, so we are threatened the safety. In this study, we derived causes and implications by analyzing concepts of sprinklers facilities, installation standards in domestic and foreign legal system, and recent cases that expanded damages in fire accidents because of weak point of installation and control standards. In domestic cases, as a result, government has to provide an institutional strategy and law that regulate duty to install sprinklers to all aggregate buildings regardless of floors in terms of new buildings. Also, if someone who has existing buildings wanted to install them, government would guarantee subsidy to encourage installation. In addition, government supervises fire-fighting activities when there are fire by compensating standards about regular inspection by a qualified technician, operation and maintenance of sprinklers as well as reinforcement of administrative criteria.

  • The study investigates the mechanical deformation of a newly developed screwless omega-wire dynamic system for stabilization of the spine. The omega-wire spring stabilization system was tested under tension, compression, and dynamic compressive fatigue loads. In addition, its bending deformation was compared to that of a spiral-wire spring system using FEA. A model whose hanger inter-center distance is 60 mm showed an ultimate tensile stress of 3981.7 N at a displacement of 3.61 mm and an ultimate compressive load of 535.6 N at a displacement of 2.16 mm. Under fatigue loading of 5 Hz with 10 N/1 N, it did not show any failure over 5 million cycles, and the displacement was restricted to 8-9 mm. In the FEA, the omega-wire spring system showed more flexible bending features than did the spiral-wire spring system.

  • Small diameter composite helical springs (CS) are developed using a hot plated mold for reinforcement of common optical fiber jumper cord (OJC). The outer diameters of the springs are about 2 ~ 3mm. These springs are inserted into the OJC to protect the damage of an optical fiber from the sudden lateral load. Two types of CS, Yarn type (Y-type) and Band type (B-type), are manufactured to compare the effectiveness for the damage protection. The experimental works were conducted to check the effect of the CS covered around OJC on the mechanical and optical properties. Experimental observations show a considerable effect on the flexural resistance, hence slowing down the deterioration of the optical power by the internal damage of the fiber. Obtained main results are as follows: (1) Y-type CS has better protection abilities to lateral loading than B-types. (2) Compared with bare OJC, CS-OJC has less power loss under the loading. (3) OJC covered with the composite coil spring has a possibility for a practical usage with full fruits.

  • Helical compression springs have been widely used in industries. The springs should be verified through experiment whether the inherent characteristics of the spring can be maintained during the manufacturing process. Considerable time and expense is spent in the manufacturing process. Therefore, in this study, the structural integrity evaluation of a spring was conducted using linear static structural analysis. Verification and comparison of the experimental data were carried out using a variety of international industrial standards with the intent to prove the validity of this study. The spring model did not consider coil ends. As a result of conducting the structural analysis, the quality of the mesh was improved and the time needed to create an analytical model was reduced. The study indicated that Poisson's ratio had little influence on the result of the structural analysis. Additionally, the possibility of verifying the structural integrity evaluation by structural analysis was confirmed.

  • This paper presents a cloth simulation technique that implements plastic deformation. Plasticity is the property that material does not restore completely to the original state once deformed, in contrast to elasticity. We model cloth using a particle model, and posit two kinds of connections between particles, i.e. the sequential connections between immediate neighbors, and the interlaced connections between every other neighbors. The sequential connections represent the compression and tension of cloth, and the interlaced connections the bending in cloth. The sequential connections are modeled by elastic springs, and the interlaced connections by elastic or plastic spring depending on the amount of the current deformation of the connections. Our model is obtained by adding plastic springs to the existing elastic particle model of cloth. Using the new model, we have been able to simulate bending wrinkles, permanently deformed wrinkles, and small wrinkles widely distributed over cloth. When constructing elastic and plastic spring models for sequential and interlaced connections, we took pain to prevent the stiffness matrix of the whole cloth system from being indefinite, in order to help achieve physical stability of the cloth motion equation and to improve the effectiveness of the numerical method.

  • Damper springs in a drive-line absorb the impulsive torque generated when a lock-up clutch is connected directly, instead of via a fluid coupling. Design optimization and finite element analysis were performed to improve the shock- and vibration-absorption capacity of the lock-up clutch. For this purpose, a multi-body dynamics model was developed by including the main parts of a vehicle, such as an engine with a clutch, a transmission, drive shafts and wheels, and a whole mass of a vehicle. The spring constants were selected so that resonance of a system could be avoided. Damper springs were optimized on the basis of the spring constants, impulsive torques, compressed angles, spring counts, fatigue constraints, etc. Topology optimization was performed for three plates with the damper springs. The compliance was set up as an objective function, and volume fraction was fixed below 0.3. A new shape for the plates was proposed on the basis of the topology result.

  • In this study, a release test bed is designed to evaluate the dynamic behaviors of a coil spring. From the release tests, the dynamic behaviors of a coil spring are analyzed. A lumped parameter spring model was established for numerical simulation of a spring. The design variables of a coil spring are optimized by using the design of experiments approach. Two-level factorial designs are used for the design optimization, and the primary effects of the design variables are analyzed. Based on the results of the interaction analysis and design sensitivity analysis, the level of the design variables is rearranged. Finally, the mixed-level factorial design is used for the optimum design process. According to the optimum design of the opening spring, the dynamic performance of the spring-operated mechanism increases by 2.90.

  • We discuss the design, fabrication, and testing of a large-displacement electromagnetic actuator with the meander springs partially exposed to a magnetic field. We compared two prototypes: a prototype (F) of the conventional actuator with the meander springs fully exposed to a magnetic field and a prototype (P) of the proposed actuator with the meander springs partially exposed to a magnetic field. For a 5 Hz square input current varying from 10.40 mA, P showed an increase of $16.9{\pm}1.2%$ in the amplitude, which was greater than the increase in the case of F. Thus, we experimentally demonstrated the large-displacement actuation performance of the proposed actuator in a small volume and at low currents (below 40 mA). The proposed electromagnetic actuator can be used for low-power and large-displacement manipulation of optical switches and optical choppers.

  • In this paper, design technique using genetic algorithms(GA) for design optimization of composite leaf springs is presented here. After the initial design has been validated by the car plate spring as a finite element model, the genetic algorithm suggests the process of optimizing the number of layers of composite materials and their angles. Through optimization process, the weight reduction process of leaf springs and the number of repetitions are compared to the existing algorithm results. The safety margin is calculated by organizing a finite element model to verify the integrity of the structure by applying an additive sequence optimized through the genetic algorithm to the structure. When GA is applied, layer thickness and layer angle of complex leaf springs have been obtained, which contributes to the achievement of minimum weight with appropriate strength and stiffness. A reduction of 65.6% original weight is reached when a leaf steel spring is replaced with a leaf composite spring under identical requirement of design parameters and optimization.

  • In order to analyze the influence on derailment safety according to the aging of primary rubber springs widely applied to railway vehicles, characteristic tests were carried out on aged primary rubber spring samples. To analyze the effect of primary rubber spring aging on derailment safety, a vehicle dynamic analysis was carried out. The results of the vertical characteristics test for the rubber spring specimens with 17 years of service life revealed that the displacement restoration function was degraded due to rubber aging and the spring stiffness significantly increased. The results of the running dynamic analysis simulating the twist track running in accordance with the EN14363 standard, compared with the normal vehicle model (Case 1), showed that the derailment coefficient and the wheel unloading of the vehicle model (Case 2) using the aging primary spring characteristic increased, and the derailment safety was degraded. IN particular, it was found that the derailment safety due to the reduction of the wheel load is weak in the transient section where a steep slope change occurs.
