  • An accurate and efficient numerical method for two-dimensional nonlinear radiation problem has been developed. The wave motion due to a moving body is described by the assumption of ideal fluid flow, and the governing Laplace equation can be effectively solved by the higher-order boundary element method with the help of the GMRES (Generalized Minimal RESidual) algorithm. The intersection or corner problem is resolved by utilizing the so-called discontinuous elements. The implicit trapezoidal rule is used in updating solutions at new time steps by considering stability and accuracy. Traveling waves caused by the oscillating body are absorbed downstream by the damping zone technique. It is demonstrated that the present method for time marching and radiation condition works efficiently for nonlinear radiation problem. To avoid the numerical instability enhanced by the local gathering of grid points, the regriding technique is employed so that all the grids on the free surface may be distributed with an equal distance. This makes it possible to reduce time interval and improve numerical stability. Special attention is paid to the local flow around the body during time integration. The nonlinear radiation force is calculated by the "acceleration potential technique". Present results show good agreement with other numerical computations and experiments.

  • The current study was conducted to evaluate the effect of music enrichment on the live body weight of chickens and meat quality grade of the carcasses. Fourteen flocks at four broiler farms with identical windowless houses were provided with identical starter and finisher diets. These were either exposed to classical music or not exposed to any music from the starter to slaughter age. At 30 days posthatch, the chickens were transported from farms to a slaughterhouse. Two hundred carcasses from each flock were randomly selected for measurement of the carcass traits by the licensed meat inspectors at the slaughterhouse. The live body weights at the slaughter age were not significantly different between the two treatments. In addition, music enrichment did not affect meat freshness (i.e., torrymeter values) nor did it affect other carcass trait variables including percentage of bruises, flesh blemishes, abnormalities, and quality A grade. In conclusion, music enrichment did not affect the body weight or carcass quality of broiler chickens.

  • Models to predict the ultimate strength of simply supported or continuous deep beams with web openings are proposed. The derived equations are based on upper-bound theorem. The concrete is assumed as a perfectly plastic material obeying the modified Coulomb failure criteria with zero tension cutoff. Reinforcing bar is considered as elastic-perfectly plastic material and its stress is calculated from the limiting principal compressive strain of concrete. The governing failure mechanisms based on test results are idealized as rigid moving blocks separated by a hyperbolic yield line. The effective compressive strength of concrete is calculated from the formula proposed by Vecchio and Collins. Comparisons with existing test results are performed, and they show good agreement.

  • Cystic hygroma remains a complex entity in terms of its development and management. Most recently, cystic hygroma has been categorized as part of a larger spectrum that include lymphangioma. The majorities of lymhangioma occur in the head and neck as cystic hygromas with the posterior cervical region as the most common site. Cystic hygromas usually present in infancy or early childhood as compressible masses that may rapidly and intermittently enlarge. While they may arise in any anatomic location, hygromas of the head and neck are especially difficult and speech pathology. Since as airway obstruction, feeding difficulties, and speech pathology. Since its original description, there have been many attepmts at treatment modalities : surgical excision remains the treatment of choice. Complete extirpation of these lesions is often impossible, and recurrence rates are accordingly high. This is report of a case bout 5-year-old female patient with cystic hygroma, resulted in facial asymmetry and swallowing difficulty, in left submandibular area. We obtained the successful functional and esthetic results by simple surgical excision of tumor mass. Therefore, we represents the case with literatural reviews.

  • The laryngeal carcinoma is the most frequent malignant tumor in the E.N.T. field. In the surgical treatment of laryngeal carcinoma, in 1873, Billroth performed the first total laryngectomy, and in 1863, H. B. Sands performed the first partial laryngectomy. Recently general advances (antibiotic therapy, blood trasfusion, and safer anesthesia) result in the improvement of postoperative prognosis. Because the laryngeal lymphatic system has the characteristic compartmentation, this serves the anatomic basis for performing the partial laryngectomy. Although the indications of partial laryngectomy are different from that of total laryngectomy, the partial laryngectomy has the advantage of not only removal of all malignant disease, but also maximum preservation of respiratory, phonatory, and sphincteric function of the larynx. In the latest, surgical treatment decreased the frequency of recurrence, and also increased the 5 year survival rate with combination of the chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The authors have experienced 8 cases of partial laryngectomy for laryngeal carcinoma at the department of otolaryngology, Korea University Hospital from 1980 to 1982. Among the total 8 cases, 2 cases were involved only in the epiglottis, 2 cases in the anterior 1/3 of both vocal cords with ant. comissure, 2 cases in the middle 1/3 of Lt. vocal cord, 1 case in the anterior 1/3 of Rt. vocal cord with ant. comissure, and another 1 case in the Rt. ventrical. So authors report these cases with review of the literature.

  • A series of studies on the development of autonomous surface ships have been promoted in domestic and foreign countries. One of the main technologies for the development of autonomous ships is path-following control, which is closely related to securing the safety of ships at sea. In this regard, the path-following performance of an autonomous ship should be first evaluated at the design stage. The main aim of this study was to develop a visual and quantitative evaluation method for the path-following control performance of an autonomous ship at the design stage. This evaluation technique was developed using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based path-following control model together with a line-of-sight (LOS) guidance algorithm. CFD software was utilized to visualize waves around the ship, performing path-following control for visual evaluation. In addition, a quantitative evaluation was carried out using the difference between the desired and estimated yaw angles, as well as the distance difference between the planned and estimated trajectories. The results demonstrated that the ship experienced large deviations from the planned path near the waypoints while changing its course. It was also found that the fluid phenomena around the ship could be easily identified by visualizing the flow generated by the ship. It is expected that the evaluation method proposed in this study will contribute to the visual and quantitative evaluation of the path-following performance of autonomous ships at the design stage.

  • In this paper, the research contents and results related to the automation of the hull-form optimal design of container ships are summarized. A container ship is a ship that generally operates near Froude number of 0.26. To implement hull-form optimal design automation for ships operating at this speed, an optimization algorithm, a hull-form change algorithm, a ship performance prediction algorithm, an automation algorithm, and an iterative calculation technique were applied to develop a numerical analysis computer program that enables hull-form optimal design automation of the container ship, and it was named HOTCONTAINER. In this study, a sensitivity analysis algorithm was developed and applied to appropriately set design variables for hull-form optimal design. To understand the reliability and real ship applicability of the developed algorithm, a numerical analysis was performed on KCS(KRISO Container Ship), a container ship that has been studied in various ways worldwide. Consequently, the optimal ship was derived, and the wave resistance, wave pattern, and wave height of the target and optimal ship were compared. In conclusion, compared the target ship, the optimal ship a 47.63% decrease in wave resistance, and the displacement and wet surface area decreased by 0.50% and 0.39%, respectively.

  • To investigate the relationship between the carcass defects considered by a meat grader and quality grade A, a total of 59,700 broiler carcasses, which were reared from September 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008 and randomly selected from 597 broiler farms with 100 broilers in each farm, were graded by a meat grader using the Korean meat grading system. The average slaughter weight of the broilers increased at the 31- to 33-d age but decreased after the 37-d age. The average daily gain to grade A ratio of the broilers was highest in autumn, and the bruises, flesh blemishes, and abnormalities of the carcasses were found to have been most frequent in winter (p<0.05). The number of economical defects (EDs) increased with the increase in the slaughter age, and the correlation coefficients of the EDs and grade A were -0.88, -0.48, and -0.12 in terms of the conformation, exposed flesh/cuts/tears, and skin discolorations of the carcasses, respectively. The correlation coefficients of the non-economical defects (NEDs) and the grade A of the broiler carcasses were -0.16, -0.22, and -0.32 in terms of the feathers, alien substances, and carcass treatment, respectively. The total number of defects (EDs + NEDs) and the grade A were highly correlated (-0.93), and in particular, the correlation between the grade A and the EDs was -0.91. It can be deemed that the grade A from a meat grader is highly correlated with the EDs. Therefore, the results suggest that broiler carcass grade evaluation using a meat grading system can provide direct information on profits in the market. The resulting carcass grade of broilers can also provide the information needed to decide on a proper incentive for a farm that has attained a good quality grade.

  • Background : Most current research using prognostic scoring systems in critically ill patients have focused on prediction using the first intensive care unit (ICU) day data or daily updated data. Usually the mean ICU length of stay in Korea is longer than in the western world. Consequently, a more cost-effective and practical prognostic parameter is required. The principal aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of the seventh day(7th day : the average mean ICU length of stay) APACHE III score in a medical intensive care unit. Methods : 241 medical ICU patients from July 1997 to April 1998 were enrolled. The 1st and 7th scores were measured by using the APACHE III scoring system and compared between survivors and non-survivors. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the $1^{st}$ and $7^{th}$ APACHE III scores and the mortality risk. Results : 1 )The mean length of stay in the ICU was $10.3{\pm}13.8$ days. 2)The mean $1^{st}$ and $7^{th}$ day APACHE III scores were $59.7{\pm}30.9$ and $37.9{\pm}27.7$. 3) The mean $1^{st}$ day APACHE III score was significantly lower in survivors than in non- survivors($49.9{\pm}23.8$ vs $86.3{\pm}32.3$, P<0.0001). 4)The mean $7^{th}$ day APACHE III score was significantly lower in survivors than in non- survivors($30.1{\pm}18.5$ vs $80.1{\pm}30.4$, P<0.0001). 5)The odds ratios among the $1^{st}$ and $7^{th}$ day APACHE III scores and the mortality rate were 1.0507 and 1.0779 respectively. Conclusion : These results suggest that the seventh day APACHE III score is as useful in predicting the outcome as is such like the first day APACHE III score. Therefore, in comparison to the daily APACHE III score, measuring the $1^{st}$ and $7^{th}$ day APACHE III scores are also useful for predicting the prognosis of critically ill patients in terms of cost-effectiveness. It is suggested that the $7^{th}$ day APACHE III score is useful for predicting the clinical outcome.

Broadening the Understanding of Sixteenth-century Real Scenery Landscape Painting: Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion (16세기(十六世紀) 실경산수화(實景山水畫) 이해의 확장 : <경포대도(鏡浦臺圖)>, <총석정도(叢石亭圖)>를 중심으로)

  • The paintings Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion were recently donated to the National Museum of Korea and unveiled to the public for the first time at the 2019 special exhibition "Through the Eyes of Joseon Painters: Real Scenery Landscapes of Korea." These two paintings carry significant implications for understanding Joseon art history. Because the fact that they were components of a folding screen produced after a sightseeing tour of the Gwandong regions in 1557 has led to a broadening of our understanding of sixteenth-century landscape painting. This paper explores the art historical meanings of Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion by examining the contents in the two paintings, dating them, analyzing their stylistic characteristics, and comparing them with other works. The production background of Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion can be found in the colophon of Chongseokjeong Pavilion. According to this writing, Sangsanilro, who is presumed to be Park Chung-gan (?-1601) in this paper, and Hong Yeon(?~?) went sightseeing around Geumgangsan Mountain (or Pungaksan Mountain) and the Gwandong region in the spring of 1557, wrote a travelogue, and after some time produced a folding screen depicting several famous scenic spots that they visited. Hong Yeon, whose courtesy name was Deokwon, passed the special civil examination in 1551 and has a record of being active until 1584. Park Chung-gan, whose pen name was Namae, reported the treason of Jeong Yeo-rip in 1589. In recognition of this meritorious deed, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Punishments, rewarded with the title of first-grade pyeongnan gongsin(meritorious subject who resolved difficulties), and raised to Lord of Sangsan. Based on the colophon to Chongseokjeong Pavilion, I suggest that the two paintings Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion were painted in the late sixteenth century, more specifically after 1557 when Park Chung-gan and Hong Yeon went on their sightseeing trip and after 1571 when Park, who wrote the colophon, was in his 50s or over. The painting style used in depicting the landscapes corresponds to that of the late sixteenth century. The colophon further states that Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion were two paintings of a folding screen. Chongseokjeong Pavilion with its colophon is thought to have been the final panel of this screen. The composition of Gyeongpodae Pavilion recalls the onesided three-layered composition often used in early Joseon landscape paintings in the style of An Gyeon. However, unlike such landscape paintings in the An Gyeon style, Gyeongpodae Pavilion positions and depicts the scenery in a realistic manner. Moreover, diverse perspectives, including a diagonal bird's-eye perspective and frontal perspective, are employed in Gyeongpodae Pavilion to effectively depict the relations among several natural features and the characteristics of the real scenery around Gyeongpodae Pavilion. The shapes of the mountains and the use of moss dots can be also found in Welcoming an Imperial Edict from China and Chinese Envoys at Uisungwan Lodge painted in 1557 and currently housed in the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University. Furthermore, the application of "cloud-head" texture strokes as well as the texture strokes with short lines and dots used in paintings in the An Gyeon style are transformed into a sense of realism. Compared to the composition of Gyeongpodae Pavilion, which recalls that of traditional Joseon early landscape painting, the composition of Chongseokjeong Pavilion is remarkably unconventional. Stone pillars lined up in layers with the tallest in the center form a triangle. A sense of space is created by dividing the painting into three planes(foreground, middle-ground, and background) and placing the stone pillars in the foreground, Saseonbong Peaks in the middle-ground, and Saseonjeong Pavilion on the cliff in the background. The Saseonbong Peaks in the center occupy an overwhelming proportion of the picture plane. However, the vertical stone pillars fail to form an organic relation and are segmented and flat. The painter of Chongseokjeong Pavilion had not yet developed a three-dimensional or natural spatial perception. The white lower and dark upper portions of the stone pillars emphasize their loftiness. The textures and cracks of the dense stone pillars were rendered by first applying light ink to the surfaces and then adding fine lines in dark ink. Here, the tip of the brush is pressed at an oblique angle and pulled down vertically, which shows an early stage of the development of axe-cut texture strokes. The contrast of black and white and use of vertical texture strokes signal the forthcoming trend toward the Zhe School painting style. Each and every contour and crack on the stone pillars is unique, which indicates an effort to accentuate their actual characteristics. The birds sitting above the stone pillars, waves, and the foam of breaking waves are all vividly described, not simply in repeated brushstrokes. The configuration of natural features shown in the above-mentioned Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion changes in other later paintings of the two scenic spots. In the Gyeongpodae Pavilion, Jukdo Island is depicted in the foreground, Gyeongpoho Lake in the middle-ground, and Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Odaesan Mountain in the background. This composition differs from the typical configuration of other Gyeongpodae Pavilion paintings from the eighteenth century that place Gyeongpodae Pavilion in the foreground and the sea in the upper section. In Chongseokjeong Pavilion, stone pillars are illustrated using a perspective viewing them from the sea, while other paintings depict them while facing upward toward the sea. These changes resulted from the established patterns of compositions used in Jeong Seon(1676~1759) and Kim Hong-do(1745~ after 1806)'s paintings of Gwandong regions. However, the configuration of the sixteenth-century Gyeongpodae Pavilion, which seemed to have no longer been used, was employed again in late Joseon folk paintings such as Gyeongpodae Pavilion in Gangneung. Famous scenic spots in the Gwandong region were painted from early on. According to historical records, they were created by several painters, including Kim Saeng(711~?) from the Goryeo Dynasty and An Gyeon(act. 15th C.) from the early Joseon period, either on a single scroll or over several panels of a folding screen or several leaves of an album. Although many records mention the production of paintings depicting sites around the Gwandong region, there are no other extant examples from this era beyond the paintings of Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion discussed in this paper. These two paintings are thought to be the earliest works depicting the Gwandong regions thus far. Moreover, they hold art historical significance in that they present information on the tradition of producing folding screens on the Gwandong region. In particular, based on the contents of the colophon written for Chongseokjeong Pavilion, the original folding screen is presumed to have consisted of eight panels. This proves that the convention of painting eight views of Gwangdong had been established by the late sixteenth century. All of the existing works mentioned as examples of sixteenth-century real scenery landscape painting show only partial elements of real scenery landscape painting since they were created as depictions of notable social gatherings or as a documentary painting for practical and/or official purposes. However, a primary objective of the paintings of Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion was to portray the ever-changing and striking nature of this real scenery. Moreover, Park Chung-gan wrote a colophon and added a poem on his admiration of the scenery he witnessed during his trip and ruminated over the true character of nature. Thus, unlike other previously known real-scenery landscape paintings, these two are of great significance as examples of real-scenery landscape paintings produced for the simple appreciation of nature. Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Chongseokjeong Pavilion are noteworthy in that they are the earliest remaining examples of the historical tradition of reflecting a sightseeing trip in painting accompanied by poetry. Furthermore, and most importantly, they broaden the understanding of Korean real-scenery landscape painting by presenting varied forms, compositions, and perspectives from sixteenth-century real-scenery landscape paintings that had formerly been unfound.
