  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the slab thickness on the tensioning design and to determine the optimal slab thickness of the post-tensioned concrete pavement (PTCP). The tensile stresses due to the vehicle and environmental loads were obtained using a finite element analysis model and the tensioning stress was calculated employing an allowable flexural strength. The environmental loads of both the constant temperature gradient and the constant temperature difference between top and bottom of the slab were considered. The tensioning designs for various slab thicknesses were performed considering prestressing losses. The comparison results showed that generally as the thickness increased, the number of tendons became larger. Consequently, the design was not economical for a thicker slab thickness. Even though the number of tendons became smaller with an increase in the thickness under the small environmental load, a thicker PTCP slab was not economical because of a higher cost of concrete than that of steel. Therefore, the slab thickness should be kept in minimum within the construction available thicknesses.

  • Purpose: Autologous fat grafting is a popular procedure for the correction of the soft tissue depression and deformity. But there are several issues required to be carefully considered in relation to this procedure, mainly about the unpredictability and the low survival rate of the grafted fat due to absorption and partial necrosis. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a lysophospholipid mediator that has been proposed to promote angiogenesis and to regulate the differentiation of adipose derived stromal cells (ASCs). In this study, we analyzed the viability of the grafted fat tissue mixed with S1P into each 12 nude mice (cann.cg-fox1nu/crlori) compared to the group of mice grafted fat tissue only. Methods: Human aspirated fat was grafted subcutaneously into the backs of 8-week-old nude mice with or without S1P. Eight weeks later, the grafted fat was harvested and the weight and volume were checked. The fat was stained with hematoxylin-eosin and 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole. Results: S1P group weighed significantly more than the control group (p=0.009), and the volume from the S1P group was considerably larger than that of the control group (p=0.004) either. In histological features, the surviving layer of the S1P group was thicker than the control group and microvasculature appeared to be prominent in the S1P group, especially in the outer layers. Conclusion: These findings suggest that S1P plays a vital role in the soft tissue augmentation, potentially providing a novel point of the control in adipose tissue for microfat graft.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the causes that induce the T-shape cracks at the joints in the jointed concrete pavements(JCPs). The finite element models of JCP including dowel bars were developed and the stress distribution in the slab was investigated under environmental loads. To investigate the effect of dowel bars on the transverse stresses at the joints that induce the T-shape cracks, the slab curling behavior was analyzed with and without dowel bars. In addition, the stress concentration was investigated when the dowel bar was not installed at the mid-depth of the slab. The results of this study showed that the transverse stresses were not affected by the dowel bars if the dowel bars were installed at the mid-depth of the slab. However, if the dowel bars were not installed at the mid-depth, the transverse stresses were concentrated at the dowel bar locations when the slab curled. The stress concentration was dependent on the contact characteristics between the dowel bar and concrete, and was significantly large when the dowel bar not installed at the mid-depth was located far from the edge of the slab. Therefore, to mitigate T-shape cracking in JCP, dowel bars should be very carefully installed and leveled at the proper locations.

  • Many studies have been reported on the successful replacement of missing teeth with osseointegrated dental Implants. However, little research has been carried out on the bio-mechanical aspect of the stress on the surrounding bone of the free-standing type of dental implant prostheses. This experimental study was aimed to analyze the stress distribution pattern on the supporting tissues depending upon the position of osseointegrated implants supporting fixed bridges. In the cases of unilateral partially edentulous mandible (the 2nd premolar and the 1st and 2nd molars missing), two osseointegrated implants were placed at the 2nd premolar and 2nd molar sites (Model A) , the 1st and 2nd molar sites (Model B, Anterior cantilevered type), the 2nd premolar and 1st molar sites (Model C, Posterior cantilevered type). Chewing forces of dentate patients and denture wearer were applied vertically on the 2nd premolar, the 1st molar, and the 2nd molar of each model. A 3-Unit fixed partial denture was constructed at each model and cantilevered extension parts were involved in Model B and Model C. Two dimensional finite element analysis was undertaken. The commercial software (Super SAP) for IBM 16 bit personal computer was utilized. The results were as follows : 1. The magnitude of applied load influenced on the total value of stresses, but did not in-fluence on the pattern of stress distribution. 2. The magnitude of stress developed from the supporting tissues were in order of Model C,Model A,Model B. 3. High stresses were concentrated on the cervical and apical portion of the implant/bone interface. 4. A difference of the stress magnitude on the implant/bone interface between mesial and distal implant was most prominant in Model C and in order of Model A and Model B. 5. The stresses developed in Model A were evenly distributed throughout both implants. 6. The stresses concentrated on the cervical portion of cantilevered side were higher in the posterior cantilevered type than in the anterior cantilevered type.

  • Indirect composite resins are used as an popular effective esthetic material in prosthetic dentistry, often with metallic substructure that provides support for restorations. Recently, new indirect composite resins as a substitute of ceramic have been developed. These resins provide good esthetics, with a wide range of hue and chroma. And the flexural strength of those is in the range of 120-150MPa, Which is higher than that of feldspathic Ceramic, and similar th that of Dicor. Although it has many merits, one of the major clinical problems of composite resins is the bond failure between metal and resin due to insufficient interfacial bond strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate shear bond strength of the reinforced indirect composite resin to dental alloys. Three different composite resin systems($Artglass^{(R)},\;Sculpture^{(R)},\;Targis^{(R)}$) as test groups and ceramic($VMK\;68^{(R)}$) as control group were bonded to Ni-Cr-Be alloy($Rexillium\;III^{(R)}$) and gold alloy(Deva 4). All specimens were stored at $^37{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours and the half of specimens were thermocycled 2000 times at temperature from $5^{\circ}C\;to\;60^{\circ}C$. The shear bond strengths of reinforced indirect composite resins to dental alloys were measured by using the universal testing machine, and modes of debonding were observed by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1 The shear bond strengths of reinforced indirect composite resins to dental alloys were approximately half those of ceramic to dental alloys(P<0.01). 2. There was no significant difference between the shear bond strength of several reinforced indirect composite resins to metal. 3. Alloy type did not affect on the shear bond strengths of resin to metal, but the shear bond strengths of ceramic to gold alloys were higher than those of ceramic to Ni-Cr alloys(P<0.05). 4. The shear bond strengths of Artglass and Targil to gold alloys were significantly decreased after thermocycling treatment(P<0.01). 5. Sculpture showed cohesive, adhesive, and mixed failure modes, but Artglass and Targis showed adhesive or mixed failures. And ceramic showed cohesive and mixed failures.

  • Today's research has been focused on changing the light source from filament to LED for luminarie illumination to overcome the shortcoming of a filament. The purpose of this research is to make an appropriate high power LED package structure for luminarie. We simulated radiation patterns of the various structures by the ray tracing simulator (Light Tools), and also analyzed the radiation patterns using an LED test system (OL770). As we increased an inner reflector angle, the radiation pattern split into two peaks and the angle between two peaks became larger. In addition, when we increased an outer reflector angle, the angle between side peaks gradually decreased, while it increased again when the angle reach $50^{\circ}$. These results could be understood from the ray tracing of the light reflected from two reflectors. We made the high power LED package for luminarie on the condition of the optimized structure which was made by ray tracing simulation results, and we measured the radiation patterns by using an LED test system, and these results were well matched to the simulation results.

  • The extruder screw material is mainly SKD11, but the recent development of synthetic resins have increased the occurrence of chemical corrosion and wear. To solve this issue, high chromium cast iron is needed because of its good abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance, but its use is avoided because of its poor machinability. In this study, to improve the machinability of high chrome cast iron, 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5% of nickel, which has excellent workability, was added to high chromium cast iron with a composition of Fe-23Cr-2.5C-1.2Si-1.08Mn-0.48Mo-0.3V, and annealed after casting. Subsequently, the effect of nickel on the machinability and corrosion resistance was analyzed using a turning test and coin polarization test, and compared with SKD11. After casting using a high-frequency vacuum induction furnace, the annealing treatment was performed at 750 ℃ for five hours and then reheated at 1100 ℃ for five hours. A turning test after annealing at 750 ℃ showed that the machinability was improved remarkably when the nickel content was over 1.0%. In the potentiodynamic polarization test in a 5% NaCl solution, the corrosion resistance decreased with increasing nickel content in the as-cast and annealing treatment. On the other hand, after reheating, the corrosion resistance was best with a 1.5% nickel content.

  • This study was conducted to develop the design methodology of longitudinal post tensioning for the post-tensioned concrete pavement (PTCP). The longitudinal stress distribution in the PTCP slab was analyzed when post tensioning was applied. Then, the tensile stress distribution in the PTCP slab due to the environmental and vehicle loads needed for the design was investigated. In addition, prestress losses were calculated considering the losses due to the frictional resistance between the slab and underlying layer and due to various reasons related to tensioning. The tensile stresses used for the design were obtained by adding the stresses from the critical conditions under both the environmental and vehicle loads. The prestress losses were obtained by considering actual field conditions. The effective post tensioning amount was determined by considering the design loads including environmental and vehicle loads and various losses, and the effect of the allowable tensile stress on the post tensioning amount was investigated. The initial stage of the design of the longitudinal post tensioning is to obtain the stresses under the design loads and the required prestress determined by subtracting the allowable tensile stress from the design stress. Then, the optimal tendon spacing and the tensioning amount can be obtained by comparing with the effective tensioning amount including various stress losses.

  • Purpose: Double - eyelid operation is one of the most common cosmetic operations among Korean patients. In such operations, however, the complexity of and individual differences in the patients' anatomical structures may cause various complications, such as asymmetry, retraction of the eyelid, and the occurrence of a high fold. A high fold occurs frequently, and its correction is not very simple. Many methods have been developed to correct it, and among these, the operation involving the excision of the skin between the previous double - eyelid line and the new double - eyelid line is usually selected by plastic surgeons. In many cases, however, patients have insufficient eyelid skins for this operation. In this study, the authors introduce an operation procedure for high - fold correction that does not involve skin excision Methods: From June 2005 to June 2009, 246 cases were treated with this procedure. After the incision of the new double - eyelid line, dissection was done between the previous scar tissue and the levator aponeurosis. Then the orbital septum, orbital fat or the retro - orbicularis oculi fat was slid down and sutured with a tarsal plate. Such sutures were repeated at four to five points, including the lateral and medial limbus, to prevent the reattachment of the previous scar and to create a new double - eyelid line at the end of the orbital septum. Results: Most of the high - fold patients were satisfied with the procedure described above. Their previous scar was hidden under the new double - eyelid line after the operation. In the six cases, the scar was visible in the patients who had a very high and deep inner line. As such, scar revision was undertaken three months after the operation. It is known that scar revision is also required after an operation involving skin excision in the case of a very high inner - eyelid line. Conclusion: This method is an appropriative procedure for high - fold correction for patients who have insufficient upper - eyelid skin.
