  • In the course of studies for anti-plaque agents, novel procyanidin structure isolated from Artocarpus heterophyllus folium was established by thiolysis and spectroscopic analysis. The chemical structure was identified for $(-)-epiafzelecin-(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8)-afzelecin-(4{\alpha}-8)-catechin$ containing the trimeric flavan-3-ols and molecular weight was 833[M-H] by FAB-MS negative ion method. The inhibitory effect on the glucosyltransferase activity was investigated, novel compound showed complete inhibition at 1.0 mM and inhibited on the glucosyltransferase noncompetitively.

  • Alnus japonica (Betulaceae) has been traditionally used for purifying blood, and curing feces containing blood, enteritis, diarrhea, alcoholism and cut wounds. In the current work, activity guided isolation of the butanol fraction of the Alnus japonica bark led to the isolation of catechin-7-O-${\beta}$-D-apiofuranoside. Anti-inflammatory activity was determined with carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice as an acute inflammation, complete Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis as a chronic inflammation. Carrageenan- induced paw edema in mice was significantly inhibited at 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 hr after carrageenan injection by administration of the flavonoid glycoside at the dose of 150mg/kg. (omitted)

  • In the course of searching for BACE1 (${\beta}$-secretase) inhibitors from natural products, the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of green tea, which was suspected to be rich in catechin content, showed potent inhibitory activity. (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate, (-)-epicatechin gallate, and (-)-gallocatechin gallate ware isolated with IC$\_$50/ values of 1.6${\times}$10$\^$-6/ M, 4.5${\times}$10$\^$-6/ M, and 1.8${\times}$10$\^$-6/ M, respectively. Seven additional authentic catechins were tested for a fundamental structure-activity relationship. (-)-Catechin gallate, (-)-gallocatechin, and (-)-epigallocatechin significantly inhibited BACE1 activity with IC$\_$50/ values of 6.0${\times}$10$\^$-6/ M, 2.5${\times}$10$\^$-6/ M, and 2.4${\times}$10$\^$-6/ M, respectively. • Qantitative analysis of six compounds: (+)-catechin, benzoic acid, gallic acid methyl ester, paeonol, paeoniflorin, and albiflorin from Paeonia lactiflora extracts was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography and an ultraviolet (UV) detector, following different extraction methods. A reverse-phase column was used in a gradient elution system, and UV detection was performed at 280 nm. The results showed that the quantity of paeoniflorin was the highest in ethanol and water extracts (73.89 and 57.87 mg/g, respectively) among the six compounds. This study contributes a good analysis method for the contents of P. lactiflora and would be propitious for developing medicines and functional foods.

  • For the utilization of chestnut inner bark as forest biomass, the diethyl ether solubles of hot water extract from chestnut inner bark was analyzed by HPLC. Each peak was identified by comparing with retention time of standard regents and their purity from obtained UV spectrum by RI detector. Identified 6 compounds were gallic acid, 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid and protocatecualdehyde as phenolic acids and aldehyde, and catechin and epicatechin as flavonoids.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the properties of soils in the sampling green tea farms and the chemical constituents of the green tea leaves at the 3 harvest stages (Ujeon ${\rightarrow}$ Sejag ${\rightarrow}$ Jungjag). The results as follows; The properties of the soils were sandy loam, loam, well drained and fertile-rich in phosphoric acids in general. The contents of chlorophyll, tannin, vitamin-c and total catechin were increased as harvest periods getting late but the contents of total nitrogen, free amino acids, theanine, caffeine were decreased on the reverse. The inorganic constituents Mg, Ca and Mn were increased as harvest periods getting late but the Na, K, B contents were decreased on the reverse. The contents of the total nitrogen, chlorophyll, total free amino acid, theanine, caffeine and total catechin and Na, Mg, Ca, B and Se were insignificant differences between Ujeon and Sejag.

  • Liquid chromatographic methods with UV and fluorescence detection have been used to determine the levels of (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epicatechin gallate, and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate in Korean green tea infusions. The extracts of Korean green tea leaves or powders in water at various temperatures (100 ${^{\circ}C}$, 80 ${^{\circ}C}$, 60 ${^{\circ}C}$) and time, were washed with chloroform and re-extracted to ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate phase was dried and re-dissolved in methanol and analyzed. Five catechin compounds were separated by gradient elution. The flavonoids were found decomposed on prolonged extraction, thus exhaustive extraction by a Soxhlet apparatus was found useless for green tea. Some unknown components were found in the extracts at 100 ${^{\circ}C}$. When the green tea was filtered and re-extracted with new fresh water, still some flavonoids were extracted. However, the contents of flavonoids in the third extract were found negligible. The flavonoid extraction rate of green tea powders was higher than that of green tea leaves, but flavonoid decomposition of green tea powders was also faster than that of green tea leaves. The traditional way of drinking green tea was found appropriate in view of flavonoids intake.
