  • The condensation reaction of 9,9'-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene with epichlorohydrin to prepare 9,9'-bis[4(glycidyloxy) phenyl]fluorene (2), an important building block for fluorene-containing epoxy polymers, has been studied. The reaction is found to be quite sensitive to several experimental conditions such as reaction temperature and time, added amount of epichlorohydrin, the presence of catalysts and the use of co-solvent. Several conditions for obtaining the best yield in the reaction are: the reaction temperature is below 373 K and the reaction time is shorter than 1.5 h, and the ammonium salts act as a catalyst. Also, the use of ternary solvent (toluene, DMSO, water) has been proved to be crucial to maintain the reaction temperature and for an easy purification. Thus, the reaction proceeds in an environment-friendly manner where the use of reactants and the production of chemical wastes is minimized.

  • Cysteine-cysteine chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) homologue cDNA was isolated from olive flounder leukocyte cDNA library. Olive flounder CCR9 homologue consisted of 1709 bp encoding 367amino acid residues. When compared with other known CCR peptide sequences, the most conserved region of the olive flounder CCR9 peptide is the seven transmembranes. A phylogenetic analysis based on the deduced amino acid sequence showed the homologous relationship between the olive flounder CCR9 sequence and that of Mouse CCR9. The olive flounder CCR9 gene was predominantly expressed in the Peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs), kidney, spleen, and gills.

  • Callus and cell suspension cultures of Eurycoma longifolia Jack could be an alternative supply of 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one and 9-methoxycanthin-6-one. The callus tissues were initiated from leaves of different trees. The friable calli were used for the preparation of the cell suspension cultures of E. longifolia. The leaf explant of tree Eu-9 produced the most callus and also induced high cell biomass in the cell suspension culture, but it produced low quantity of 9-methoxycanthin- 6-one and 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one. The leaf explant from tree Eu-8 produced low quantity of callus and cell biomass, but produced the highest quantity of 9-methoxycanthin- 6-one and 9-hydroxycanthin-6-one. Optimum production of cell biomass was obtained on cell culture medium with pH 5.75 prior to autoclaving, but high alkaloids content could be induced in culture medium in acidic condition with pH 4.75 and 5.25 prior to autoclaving.

  • 소에서 경정맥, 경동맥 및 갑상선의 초으파상에 관한 기초자료를 확립하기 위하여 본 연구를 실시하였다. 한우 9두에서 6개월경으로부터 12개월령에 도달할 때까지 1개월 간격으로 성장에 따른 경정맥, 경동맥 및 갑상선의 초음파상을 측정하였다. 경정맥, 경도맥 및 갑상선은 경부의 양측에서 관찰하였다. 경정맥의 내경은 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 및 13개월령에서, 각각 8.5, 8.7, 8.8, 9.5, 10.0, 10.5, 11.5 및 12.2mm를 나타내었다. 경동맥의 내경은, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 및 13개월령에서, 각각 7.4, 7.5, 8.6, 9.1, 9.4, 9.7, 10.1 및 10.3mm 이었다. 갑상선엽의 길이는 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 및 13개월령에서, 각각 28.0, 32.1, 36.4, 42.2, 51.7, 53.2, 55.1 and 58.8mm이었다. 갑상선엽의 높이는 6, 7, 8, 9. 10, 11, 12 및 13개월령에서, 각각 13.6, 15.3, 16.1, 20.7, 22.9, 25.6, 28.9 and 29.4mm를 나타내었다. 본 연구에서는 초음파측정 결과는 한우에서의 경정맥, 경동맥 및 갑상선에서의 형태학적 변화의 진단을 위한 참고자료가 될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

  • Human NeuNAc-9-P synthase is a two-domain protein with ability to synthesize both NeuNAc-9-P and KDN-9-P. Its mouse counterpart differs by only 20 out of 359 amino acids but does not produce KDN-9-P. By replacing the AFL domain of the human NeuNAc-9-P synthase which accommodates 12 of these differences, with the mouse AFL domain we examined its importance for the secondary KDN-9-P synthetic activity. The chimeric protein retained almost half of the ability of the human enzyme for KDN-9-P synthesis while the NeuNAc-9-P production was reduced to less than 10%. Data from the homology modeling and the effect of divalent ions and temperature on the enzyme activities suggest conformational differences between the human and mouse AFL domains that alter the shape of the cavity accommodating the substrates. Therefore, although the AFL domain itself does not define the ability of the human enzyme for KDN-9-P synthesis, it is important for both activities by aiding optimal positioning of the substrates.

A Study on The Φ 9mm Titanium Alloy Wire (9mm 합금타이타늄 중간 선재 연구)

  • Ti-3Al-2.5V ingot was produced, processed into a titanium alloy wire of 9mm diameter, and the characteristics were studied in comparison with imported material. The ingot satisfied ASTM Grade 9 standard showing oxygen content of 0.11wt% and iron content of 0.085wt%. The hardness of the 9mm diameter titanium alloy was similar to that of the imported material showing values between 225 and 250Hv, and the tensile strength of the imported material was 804MPa while that of the domestic development was 734MPa. The elongation of the imported material was 12% while that of the domestic development was 22%. A new process of manufacturing 9.0mm diameter titanium alloy wire through forging and multi-step hot rolling process out of 400mm diameter ingot was developed.

  • 6-(4-Iodophenyl)amino-7-chloro-5,8-quinolinedione (RCK9) was evaluated for antifungal activities. The MIC values of RCK9 were determined against A. flavus, c. albicans, C. neoformans and F. oxysporium. The RCK9 showed generally potent antifungal activities against the tested fungi. Acute oral toxicity studies of RCK9 were carried out in ICR mice of both sexes. These acute oral toxicities of RCK9 had been evaluated. RCK9 were low and LD50 values were over 2,850 mg/kg in ICR mice. The genotoxicities of RCK9 had been evaluated. RCK9 was negative in Ames test with Salmonella typhimurium and chromosomal aberration test in CHL cells. The clastogenicity was tested on the RCK9 with in vivo mouse micronucleus assay. RCK9 did not show any clastogenic effect in mouse peripheral blood and was negative in mouse micronucleus assay. The results indicate that RCK9 has no genotoxic potential under these experimental conditions.

Comparison of the safety and immunogenicity of commercial S. gallinarum 9R vaccine (국내 시판 Salmonella gallinarum 9R vaccine의 안전성 및 면역원성 비교)

  • Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar gallinarum (S. gallinarum) is the agent of fowl typhoid, and the 9R vaccine is a commercial live vaccine for the prevention of fowl typhoid. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and immunogenicity of different brands of S. gallinarum 9R vaccine used in commercial laying chickens in Korea. All 9R strains originated from three different brands showed the same pattern in the biochemical and serological properties, and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) profile. But, there was a difference in rhamnose fermentaion, agglutination with Salmonella group $D_1$ antiserum and PFGE pattern between 9R vaccine strain and field S. gallinarum isolates. In laboratory and field trials for assesment of safety and immunogenicity of 9R vaccine, all of the three 9R vaccines showed the same safety in commercial laying chickens. In addition, there was a significant difference between the vaccinated and unvaccinated control groups in mortality and the re-isolation rate of the challenge strain from the tissues (p < 0.05), and no difference by the brands of 9R vaccine. The results from this study indicated that all three different brands of S. gallinarum 9R vaccine showed highly protection against mortality and organ invasion in commercial laying chickens exposed to virulent strains of S. gallinarum.

  • The three different composition of BaTi4O9, Ba2Ti9O20 and BaTi5O11 were prepared by coprecipitation process, and then the dielectric properties of these compounds were measured at low microwave frequencies. The powder showing high level of purity was synthesised by the coprecipition reaction of BaCl2 and TiCl4 where (NH4)2CO3 and NH4OH were used as a deflocculent. Followings are the result of this study: 1. The sintering temperature increased with increasing TiO2 content. 2. BaTi4O9 powder were synthesized as a single phase by this processing technique, but the resultant Ba2Ti9O20 and BaTi5O11 phase existed with Ba2Ti9O20 and BaTi5O11 phases. 3. Single phase BaTi4O9 showed high dielectric constant value of 35, high Q value of 8100.

Treatment of Exogenous GDF9 and BMP15 during In Vitro Maturation of Oocytes increases the Cell Number of Blastocysts in Pigs

  • Growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) and bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) are oocyte-specific growth factors that regulate many critical processes involved in early folliculogenesis and oocyte maturation. In this study, effects of GDF9 and BMP15 treatment during in vitro maturation of porcine oocytes upon development after parthenogenetic activation were investigated. Neither GDF, BMP15 alone nor in combination affects the number and viability of cumulus cells or the rates of oocyte maturation and blastocyst development. However, the treatment of GDF9 on porcine oocytes increased the number of trophectodermal (TE) cells of blastocysts derived from activated oocytes (P<0.05). The treatment of BMP15 increased the cell numbers of both inner cell mass (ICM) and TE cells (P<0.05). The treatment with the combination of GDF9 and BMP15 further increased the numbers of ICM and TE cells, compared with GDF9 or BMP15 treatment alone (P<0.05). In conclusion, the treatment of GDF9 or BMP15 (or both) enhanced the quality of blastocysts via the increased number of ICM and/or TE cells.
