  • As computing and network technologies are further developed, communication equipment continues to become smaller, and as a result, mobility is now a predominant feature of current technology. Therefore, demand for speech recognition systems in mobile environments is rapidly increasing. This paper proposes a novel method to recognize the Korean vowel 'ㅐ' as a part of a phoneme-based Korean speech recognition system. The proposed method works by analyzing a sequence of patterns in the time domain instead of the frequency domain, and consequently, its use can markedly reduce computational costs. Three algorithms are presented to detect typical sequence patterns of 'ㅐ', and these are combined to produce the final decision. The results of the experiment show that the proposed method has an accuracy of 89.1% in recognizing the vowel 'ㅐ'.

  • Investigating and comparing English vowels $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/$, and their-supposedly- corresponding vowels in Korean /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/, this study addresses the following questions: Do Koreans pronounce/ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ differently? Do they pronounce English $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/$ differently? And what is the relationship between the Korean vowels and the English vowels? Is the conventional correspondence (/ㅔ:${\varepsilon}/$, and /ㅐ/:${\ae)/$ appropriate? The results showed that 24 Korean male college students distinguish neither Korean /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ nor English $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/$, thus suggesting that their inability to distinguish the two vowels in their native tongue has an effect on their production of the English vowels. While not distinguishable within a language, Korean /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ still form a separate group from English $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/$. But Korean-Produced $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/$ are significantly different from American-produced $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/:$ Korean-produced $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/$ have much lower F1 and F2 than American-produced counterparts. Accordingly it is advised that, in learning English pronunciation, Korean students should be instructed to take the English vowel system as a separate system from Korean one, and thus, not to substitute Korean vowels for English vowels. And students should be provided with specific instructions on the articulatory differences between English vowels and Korean vowels. For example, Cey should be instructed to lower their jaws more for English $/{\varepsilon}/\;and\;/{\ae}/$ than for Korean /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/.

  • When an ending which begins with 'a/a'combines to a stem,'a/a'can be deleted.Especially when ot combines to an h-irregular verb,it is represented as a variant like '-a-','-e-','-ia-',or'-ie-'.In order to analyze the variants of 'a/a',we suggest the format of a grammatical morpheme dictionary which is represented as a binary tree and several procedures which process the variants so that the unexpected errors can be removed which occur frequently when we analyze Korean worl phrase.

  • This paper investigates the status of the merger between the mid front unrounded vowels ㅔ[e] and ㅐ[${\varepsilon}$] in contemporary Korean. Our analysis is based on a balanced corpus of production and perception data from young subjects from three dialectal areas (Seoul, Daegu and Gwangju). Except for expected gender differences, the production data display no difference in the realization of these vowels, in any of the dialects. The perception data, while mostly in line with the production results, show that Seoul females tend to better discriminate the two vowels in terms of perceived height: vowels with a lower F1 are more likely to be categorized as ㅔ by this group. We then investigate the possible causes of this merger: based on an empirical study of transcribed spoken Korean, we show that the pair of vowels ㅔ/ㅐ has a very low functional load. We argue that this factor, together with the phonetic similarity of the two vowels, may have been responsible for the observed merger.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate formant characteristics of Korean monophthongs spoken by Japanese learners and to compare the characteristics of vowels produced by the Japanese learners with those of the Korean native speakers. The data consisted of three categories: eight vowels in isolation, words including eight vowels in carrier sentences, and words including eight vowels in natural sentences. In this study, formant frequencies of the vowels were measured by Wave Surfer. It was assumed that the formant frequencies of the Korean vowels produced by the Japanese learners could be different from those of the Korean native speakers due to the influence of their own Japanese vowels. Results of this study showed that the Japanese learners had the difficulties to distinguish between the pairs /-/and /ㅜ/, /ㅓ/and /ㅗ/, and /ㅏ/and /ㅔ/. In Japanese vowels, F2 frequency value of /ㅜ/ was similar to that of the Korean /-/. It means that when the Japanese leaners produced Korean /ㅜ/, they might neutralize /-/ and /ㅜ/. Besides, there were not /ㅓ/and /ㅐ/ in Japanese vowels. Therefore, they tended to pronounce /ㅓ/ similar to /ㅗ/ which has the most similar formant frequency value with that of /ㅓ/, and /ㅐ/ was pronounced similar to /ㅔ/ for the same reason.

  • In this study, the system is proposed which can be used for recognition of Koean single vowles "ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅡ, ㅣ, ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅚ,", and automatic recognition is processed using $\mu$-computer. 3 men of not-being-studied are participated in this experiment. Using the period of vowels, one part of the steady state is selected for high speed recognition, and amplitude comparison method, LPC, PARCOR, and Formant are used for parameter of recognition. Formant is obtained by peak picking method using LPC, and then vowels are recognized by amplitude comparison method, LPC, PARCOR, and Formant. As a result, Recognition rates are 90.1% for amplitude comparison method, 93.1% for LPC, 100% for PARCOR, 88.8% for using formant.
