To investigate differences in Cd and Zn contents in paddy soils and rice plants polluted by aerial emissions from the Janghang smelter, soil samples in the different directions and at the surface (0-15cm) and subsurface (15-30cm) in 1982 and 1990, and rice plants at the corresponding sampling sites in 1990 were collected from the Janghang Smelter Area. Soil samples were extracted with $4M-HNO_3$ and plant samples were digested with a mixture of $HNO_3$ and $HClO_4$for analyzing by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Cd and Zn contents in soils ranged from 0.09 to 4.42 and from 16.0 to 959.5mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively. The average contents of Cd and Zn in 1990 were higher than those in 1982. The Cd and Zn contents of soils near the center of the smelter were higher than those of soils farther from the center and also decreased in the order of east > north-north east > north east > north. The Cd and Zn levels in surface soils were higher than those in subsurface soils. The contaminated areas of Cd and Zn were within 4km in the east, and within 3km in the north-north east and the north east. Metal contents in brawn rice were the lowest in rice plants. The Cd content of brown rice was one sixth of that in leaf blade and in leaf sheath. The Cd content of leaf blade, stem and panicle axis were significantly correlated with the levels of Zn, Cu and Pb in soils, and Zn content of stem was significantly correlated with the levels of Cu and Pb. The Cd and Zn content in brown rice ranged from 0.05 to 0.25mg $kg^{-1}$ and from 10.5 to 30.9㎎ $kg^{-1}$ in the smelter area, respectively.
The mixing treatment process using lime (CaO) and limestone ($CaCO_3$) as the immobilization amendments was applied for heavy metal contaminated filmland soils around Goro abandoned Zn-mine, Korea in the batch and pilot scale continuous column experiments. For the batch experiments, with the addition of 0.5 wt.% commercialized lime or limestone, leaching concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn from the contaminated filmland soil decreased by 70, 77, 94, and 95 %, respectively, compared to those without amendments. For the continuous pilot scale column experiments, the acryl column (30 cm in length and 20 cm in diameter) was designed and granulated lime and limestone were used. From the results of column experiments, with only 2 wt.% of granulated lime, As, Cd, and Zn leaching concentrations decreased by 63%, 97%, and 98%, respectively. With 2 wt.% of granulated limestone, As leaching concentration reduced from 135.6 to 30.2 ${\mu}g/L$ within 5 months and maintained mostly below 10 ${\mu}g/L$, representing that more than 46% diminution of leaching concentration compared to that without the amendment mixing. For Cd and Zn, their leaching concentrations with only 2 wt.% of limestone mixing decreased by 97%, respectively compared to that without amendment mixing, suggesting that the capability of limestone to immobilize heavy metals in the filmland soil was outstanding and similar to that of lime. From the column experiments, it was investigated that if the efficiency of limestone to immobilize heavy metals from the soil was similar to that of lime, the limestone could be more available to immobilize heavy metals from the soil than lime because of low pH increase and thus less harmful side effect.
The effects of the particle size of precursor powder on the microstructure and Jc of Ag-sheathed Ri-2223 tapes were investigated. The calcined powder with overall composition of $Bi_{1-89}Pb_{0-41}Sr_{2-01}Ca_{2-23}Cu_{3-03}O_{y}$ was milled for various times using planetary ball mill. The transport property of the tapes were found to depend strongly on the particle size of the precursor powder Enhanced reactivity of the milled powder facilitated the formation of 2223 phase and resulted in an increase of Jc. Excessive milling, however, led to the amorphisation of the powder and degraded the electrical property of the tapes.

PSZT powders having the particle size of 0.5~5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ with cubic shapes, were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction in the temperature range of 150~$^{\190circ}C$ for a 2 h reaction. Experimental results showed that as the reaction temperature increased, the nucleation and crystal growth were accelerated and the the particle size became larger. However, the particle size became smaller with its narrow distribution as the concentration of a mineralizer (KOH) increased. It was possible to reduce the reaction temperature by increasing mineralizer concentrations. With increase in Zr/Ti ratio, the major crystal phase of synthetic PSZT powders was seen to change from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase.
Ferroelectric Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 thin films were successfully fabricated on ITO/Glass substrate by sol-gel proces-sing and characterized to determine the dielectric and electric properties. Viscosity of PEN sol measured to investigate rheological properties was 3.25 cP which was proper for coating. The sol also showed Newtonian behavior. RTA(Rapid Thermal Annealing) was used for the annealing of the thin film and 1200~1700$\AA$ thick PEN thin films were fabricated by repeating the intermediate and the final annealing. After the deposition of Pt as top electrode by vacuum evaporation dielectric and electric properties were measured. Dielectric properties of FFN thin film were enhanced by increasing the perovskite phase fraction with increasing the annealing temperature. Measured dielectric constant of 1700$\AA$ PFN thin film annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ was 890 at 1kHz Capacitatnce density and dielectric loss were 47 fF/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$2 and 0.47 respectively. As a result of measuring Curie temperature PFN thin films had Curie point with a rang of 110~12$0^{\circ}C$ and showed broad dielectric peak at that point. Leakage current of the PFN thin films were increased with increasing the annealing tempera-ture.

We have studied the effects of La concentration on the optical and electrical properties of lead lanthanum titanate (PLT) thin films by using sol-gel method. Both the optical and electrical properties are greatly affected by the La concentration. The refreactiv eindices of the films varied from 2.23 to 1.93 with varying La concentration in the range from 15 to 33 mol%. The dielectric constants of the films vary form 340 to 870 with varying La concentration in the range form 15 to 33 mol%. Hysteresis loop becomes slimmer with the increase of La concentration form 15 to 28mol% and little fatter again with the increase of La concentration form 28 to 33 mol%. Among the films investigated in this research, PLT(28) thin film shows the best dielectric properties for the application to the dielectrics of ULSI DRAM's. At the frequency of 100Hz, the dielectric constant and the loss tangent of PLT(28) thin films are 940 and 0.08 respectively. Its leakage current density at 1.5${\times}10^{5}$V/cm is 1${\times}10^{-6}A/cm^{2}$. The comparision between the simulated and the experimental curves for the switching transient characteristics shows that PLT (28) thin films behaves like normal dielectrics.

We jointed Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O multifilament tapes and evaluated their electrical and mechanical properties. In order to improve connectivity of multifilaments, one or two single-filament tape was inserted between two multifilament tapes. The critical current ratio(CCR) and n-value of the jointed tapes were evaluated as a function of uniaxial pressure. It was observed that critical current ratio and n-value were 24.8-29.0% and 2.5-2.8 for MM lap-jointed tape. On the other hand, the corresponding values were improved to 24.7-53.9% and 3.1-4.2 for MSM jointed tape, and 63.4-76.0% and 3.4-5.1 for double MS:vr lap-jointed tape, respectively. The highest electrical properties of double MSM lap-jointed tape are considered to be owing to the presence of single core, causing better interconnections of multifilaments between the two tapes. The mechanical property of jointed tape was evaluated and correlated to the microstructural evolution. The strength of jointed tapes was 44-64% less than that of the unjoined tape. The strain tolerance of jointed tape was also reduced compared to that of the unjoined tape. These lower mechanical properties of jointed tape are probably due to the induced nonuniform microstructure such as the existence of cracks and Ag-intrusion in the joined region.

In this study, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(TC $F_{r}$), dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Pb[(S $b_{1}$2/N $b_{1}$2/)$_{0.0035}$-(M $n_{1}$3/N $b_{2}$3/)$_{0.0065}$-(Z $r_{x}$$Ti_{1-x}$ )$_{0.90}$] $O_3$ceramics is investigated with Zr/Ti ratio. The dielectric constant and electromechanical coupling factor( $k_{p}$) showed the highest values of 1257, 0.562 respectively when the Zr/Ti ratio is 49.5/50.5. The mechanical quality factor( $Q_{m}$) is the lowest value of 713 when the Zr/Ti ratio is 49.5/50.5, and increased with the decrease of the Zr/Ti ratio. The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(TC $F_{r}$) change abruptly at the morphotropic phase boundary(MPB), which is between the rhombohedral phase with highly negative TC $F_{r}$ of -106ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and the tetragonal phase with highly positive TC $F_{r}$ of +64pp $m^{\circ}C$ as Zr/Ti ratio changes from 50/50 to 49.5/50.5.50.5..5.50.5.5.
