Rapid and Precise Determination of Pb Isotope Ratios Using Mu1ti-Collector ICP/MS (다검출기 유도결합 플라즈마 질량분석기를 이용한 신속하고 정밀한 Pb 동위원소 분석)

  • This study investigated the effects of Pb/Tl ratio, Pb concentration and concomitant matrix elements on the measurement of Pb isotope ratios using multi-collector ICP/MS (AXIOM MC model). Accuracy and reproducibility of Pb isotope ratios in NBS 981 solution were estimated for 42 data measured from March to August 2001. Pb isotopes measured in rocks, bronzes and sediments were compared to data measured by TIMS. Reproducibilities for $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb,\; ^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb,\;and\;^{208}Pb/^{204}Pb$ ratio were about 500 ppm (2sd) and for $^{207}Pb/^{206}Pb$\;and\;^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb$ were 100~200 ppm for 200 ng of Pb in NBS 981 solution. The optimum conditions for the analysis of Pb isotope ratios with AXIOM MC for best accuracy and reproducibility were defined as follows; 1) Pb/Tl ratio is about 10 2) Pb concentration is about 100 ng/ml 3) correction for mass discrimination is performed by exponential law using 2.3887 of $^{205}Tl/^{203}Tl$ and Pb mass fractionation factor empirically obtained from $ln(^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb)-ln(^{205}Tl/^{203}Tl)$ relationship. The sample data measured with MC/ICP/MS for acid-digested and chemically separated rock samples, and acid-digested bronze samples and sediment samples coincide with those of TIMS within analytical errors. Therefore, MC/ICP/MS is a rapid analytical technique for Pb isotope ratios with the similar precision compared with TIMS.

  • Addition of various acids or organic compounds to the electrolyte solution during the electrodeposition of $PbO_2$ on titanium madras substrate strongly affected performance of the deposited $PbO_2$ layer. Results of X-ray diffractometry ascertained that ${\beta}-PbO_2$ was deposited in acidic electrolyte. Among additives used in this experiment, $PbO_2$ with a high oxygen overvoltage was electrodeposited when sodium lauryl sulfate was added, and $PbO_2$ with a lower chlorine overvoltage was electrodeposited when polyethylene glycol was added to the electrolyte solution. The oxygen and chlorine overvoltage of $PbO_2$ was strongly dependent on the stirring provided during the electrodeposition experiment. It was observed by the SEM results that the $PbO_2$ grains deposited when stirring was not provided during the electrodeposition have larger than $PbO_2$ grains deposited by stirring. In the $PbO_2$ deposition under acidic electrolyte, the oxygen overvoltage increased with larger $PbO_2$ grains and the chlorine overvoltage decreased with smaller $PbO_2$ grains. The optimal current efficiency of $PbO_2$ in the presence of perchloric acid was observed at $Pb(NO_3)_2$ 560g/l, $65{\sim}70^{\circ}C$, and pH>1.

Study of properties of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ with PbO and $BapbO_3$ additives

  • The melting temperature and critical temperature(Tc) of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ with deferent content impurities of PbO and $BaPbO_3$ were studied. When the PbO was used as addition in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$, although the melting point could be reduced, the superconductivity(the transition width, ${\Delta}T_c$) became poor. From the XRD pattern of the sintered mixture of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ and PbO it was known that there is a reaction between $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ and PbO, and the product is $BaPbO_3$. In the process of the reaction the superconducting phase of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ was decreased and in the sample $BaPbO_3$ became the main phase. Therefore the superconductivity was reduced. $BaPbO_3$ was chosen as the impurity for the comparative study. The single phase BaPbO3 was synthesized by the simple way from both mixtures of $BaPbO_3$ and PbO, $BaPbO_3\;and\;PbO_2$. Deferent contents of $BaPbO_3$(10%, 20%, 30%) were added in the $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$. By the phase analysis in the XRD patterns it was proved that there werenot reactions between $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ and $BaPbO_3$. When $BaPbO_3$ was used as impurity in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ the superconductivity was much better than PbO as impurity in $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$. But the melting point of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ with $BaPbO_3$ could not be found when the temperature was lower than $1000^{\circ}C$ in the DTA measurement.

  • Influence of Nd3+ substitution for Pb2+ on the dielectric properties and the PbO evaporation according to substituting Nd3+ for Pb2+ in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 system ceramics have been investigated. The dielectric constant at the curie temperature and evaporation of PbO were decreased with increase of Nd3+ amounts. The percentage of PbO evaporation was 2.5wt% in the PMN system substituted Nd3+ for Pb2+, while it was 3.7wt% in the PMN system.

  • The effects of 0 to 6 mol% excess 91PbO-9WO3 addition on the microstructure and the dielectric pro-perties in 40Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-30PbTiO3-30Pb(Mg1/2W1/2)O3 ternary system were investigated. Excess 91PbO-9WO3 addition enhanced densification at relatively lower temperature due to the formation of liquid phase. The dielectric constant of the specimen with standard composition was 16,400 and that of specimen with 1 mol% excess additive was the maximum of 18,500. And more than 2 mol% excess addition decreased dielec-tric constant. Specimens with 2~4 mol% 91PbO-9WO3 addition showed dual peak maxima in the tem-perature dependence of dielectric constant. In the specimens which have more than 5 mol% excess addition a new phase with W-rich composition was formed at grain boundary.

  • Phase transformation of PbO-precursor prepared from $Pb(NO_{3})_{2}$ by precipitation technique was observed by TG-DTA, XRD, FT-IR, and Raman spectral analysis. PbO-precursor was derived from an aqueous solution of $Pb(NO_{3})_{2}$ at $45^{\circ}C$ and pH of 9.0. The precipitate showed it to be the mixture of hydrous lead oxynitrate and lead hydroxynitrate. With increasing heat-treatment temperature ranging up to $560^{\circ}C$, the precursor changed to $3Pb(NO_{3})_{2}$ . 7Pb0, $Pb(NO_{3})_{2}$. 5Pb0 and PbO(litharge), in turn. Finally, it transformed to massicot form of PbO above $560^{\circ}C$.

From the XRD pattern of the sintered mixture of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox and PbO it was known that there is a reaction between YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox and PbO, and the product is BaPbO$_3$. In the process of the reaction the superconducting phase of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox was decreased and in the sample BaPbO$_3$became the main phase. Therefore the superconductivity was reduced. BaPbO$_3$was chosen as the impurity for the comparative study. The single phase BaPbO$_3$was synthesized by the simple way from both mixtures of BaPbO$_3$and PbO, BaPbO$_3$and PbO$_2$. Deferent contents of BaPbO$_3$(10%, 20%, 30%) were added in the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox. By the phase analysis in the XRD patterns it was proved that there were not reactions between YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox and BaPbO$_3$. When BaPbO$_3$was used as impurity in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox the superconductivity was much better than PbO as impurity in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox But the melting point of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$Ox with BaPbO$_3$could not be found when the temperature was lower than 1000 $^{\circ}C$ in the DTA measurement.

Pb-Pb Age of Marble from Muju, Korea (무주지역 대리암의 Pb-Pb 연대)

  • Pb isotope composition is analyzed from the rock chips of marbles intercalated between gneisses of Muju area and it shows very large variation ($^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$=23.74~4142, $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$=16.32~18.43, $^{208}Pb/^{204}Pb$=36.42~39.75). The data points form well defined positive relationship on $^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb$ vs $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb$ plot, which corresponds to $1.99{\pm}0.10$($2{\sigma}$) Ga. This age is very similar to the formation ages of the granitic gneisses from Buncheon and Cheondongri (Tanyang), and suggests that the fairly large volume of Sobaeksan Massif suffered regional metamorphism at this time. It is suggested that the most parts of Korean peninsula including Kyeonggi and Sobaeksan Massifs were very close each other and experienced a regional metamorphism together about 2.0 Ga ago from the fact that galenas from whole Korean Peninsula except Kyeongsang Basin and metamorphic rocks from Kyeonggi Massif also reveal a similar slope corresponding 2.0 Ga on Pb-Pb isotope plot.

The Uptake of Lead Ion with Staphylococcus epidermidis (Staphylococcus epidermidis 를 이용한 납 이온의 축적에 관한 연구)

  • Absorption of $\textrm{Pb}^{2-}$ from aqueous solution was studied using Staphylococcus epidermidis. Cells of exponential phase were employed as absorbents. Uptake ratio defined as the ratio of amount of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ absorbed to that of initial $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$. Absorption of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ increased with increase in cell concentration. while amount of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ per unit cell mass decreased. Uptake ratio of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ augmented and then diminished after exhibiting a maximum as the pH of the solution increased. Equilibrium absorption of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ deviated from Freundlich isotherm especially at higher concentration of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ due to the precipitation phenomena. HCI and EDTA were founded to desorb $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ more effectively than $\textrm{Na}_{2}\textrm{CO}_{3}$ or $\textrm{NaHCO}_{3}$. After 10 cycles of absorption and desorption. $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ absorption capability remained almost unchanged and the biomass had leaked out 30-40 wt/%. Uptake ratio of Pb2+ decreased in the presence of other heavy metal ions due to the competitive absorption The inhibition of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ absorption appeared to have a strong correlation with ionic radius of the competing ions. Especially $\textrm{Cr}^{3-}$, $\textrm{Co}^{2+}$ or $\textrm{Fe}^{2+}$ having smaller ionic radius depressed more significantly the uptake of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ than any other metal ions tested.
