  • Objectives This study was performed to investigate the effects of Saengkanggamchotang (SKT) on the monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) induced osteoarthritis in rats. Methods Osteoarthritis was induced by injection of MIA (50 ul, 60 mg/ml) into knee joints of rats. Rats are divided into a total of 4 groups (normal, control, positive comparison group, SKT treated group, each n=6). Normal group are not treated at all without inducing osteoarthritis whereas control group were induced for osteoarthritis by MIA and oral medicated with 20 ml of distilled water per day. Positive comparison group was injected with MIA and after 7 days, that was taken indomethacin (30 mg/kg/mouse). SKT treated group was injected with MIA and after 7 days that was taken SKT (30 mg/kg/mouse). Positive comparison group and SKT treated group were oral medicated for each substance a total of 4 weeks with one time per day. After experiments (from 1 week after injection of papain to 4 weeks elapsed), the functions of liver and kidney, Prostaglandin E2, inflammatory cytokine (IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, TNF-${\alpha}$), osteocalcin, TIMP-1, MMP-9 within serum. Knee joint structures were observed by H&E, safranin-O staining method, and amount of cartilage were measured by ${\mu}CT$-arthrography. Results 1) Hind paw weight bearing ability was significantly improved. 2) Functions of liver and kidney were not affected. 3) Prostaglandin E2, osteocalcin, TIMP-1, MMP-9 in serum were significantly decreased. 4) Inflammatory cytokine IL-$1{\beta}$ was significantly decreased, and IL-6, TNF-${\alpha}$ were decreased but had not significant. 5) In terms of histopathology, significantly reduced subsidence of cartilage and bone in H&E staining. And in Safranin O staining, proteoglycan content in synovial membrane was significantly increased compared with control group. 6) Destruction of cartilage on ${\mu}CT$-arthrography was significantly reduced. Conclusions Based on all results mentioned above, Saengkanggamchotang (SKT) is believed to be meaningful for suppressing the progress of osteoarthritis and its treatments.

  • The antimicrobial and antioxidative effects of Opuntia ficus-indica vur. saboten (OP) extract with different solvents and extraction methods were investigated. In general, antimicrobial activity of OP was higher in extracts by reflux than in extracts by shake. However, no significant difference in antimicrobial activity was observed between methanol, ethanol and water extract. The antimicrobial activity was significant against all microbes tested, especially against Pseudomonas aeruginosa by shake extract and against Escherichia coli O-157 by reflux extract. A severe morphological change with destruction of outer layer was observed in Salmonella enteritidis treated with water extract. Though OP extract in hydrogen activity was lower than 0.1% BHT, the activity of OP extract showed very high effectivenss than the activity of control. OP extract showed a similar extent of antioxidative activity with BHT.

  • The article explores the prospects and trends for the transformation of some basic concepts of law associated with the development of artificial intelligence systems and the problems of liability for harm caused by a robot. The prospects, conditions and consequences of vesting robots with partial (quasi) or full legal personality are explored. This process should lead to a revision of the concepts of will, subjective side and legal responsibility in the direction of their greater universalization. The legally significant signs of will, legal personality, legal liability in relation to robots, artificial intelligence systems and other complex automated information systems are clarified. The author identifies the following essential factors of legal qualification of an act committed by a robot: goals, reasons for setting goals, connections between the planned result and the action taken, the actual result, the reasons for the difference between the actual result and the planned one. The article pays special attention to the preventive function of legal liability, which, when applied to robot subjects, can be expressed in the following basic procedures. 1. Accounting for legal requirements in the behavior of the robot. 2. Timely adaptation of the robot to changes in legislation and other regulatory legal acts that affect its behavior. 3. Accounting for incidents. 4. Destruction of a series of robots whose actions lead to unacceptable consequences.

  • A wide spectral coverage from near-infrared (NIR) to far-infrared (FIR) of AKARI both for imaging and spectroscopy enables us to efficiently study the emission from gas and dust in the interstellar medium (ISM). In particular, the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI offers a unique opportunity to carry out sensitive spectroscopy in the NIR ($2-5{\mu}m$) for the first time from a spaceborn telescope. This spectral range contains a number of important dust bands and gas lines, such as the aromatic and aliphatic emission bands at 3.3 and $3.4-3.5{\mu}m$, $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ ices at 3.0 and $4.3{\mu}m$, CO, $H_2$, and H I gas emission lines. In this paper we concentrate on the aromatic and aliphatic emission and ice absorption features. The balance between dust supply and destruction suggests significant dust processing taking place as well as dust formation in the ISM. Detailed analysis of the aromatic and aliphatic bands of AKARI observations for a number of H ii regions and H ii region-like objects suggests processing of carbonaceous dust in the ISM. The ice formation process can also be studied with IRC NIR spectroscopy efficiently. In this review, dust processing in the ISM divulged by recent analysis of AKARI data is discussed.

  • Catalytic filter is capable of performing shallow bed dust filtration plus a catalytic reaction, promoted by a catalyst deposited in its inner structure. Such a feature may allow potential cost and space reduction in several environmental applications. Dust filtration and halogenated volatile organic compound (1,2-dichlorobenzene) destruction were carried out in a lab-scale reactor. $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ supplied by MaGreen, which showed high catalytic acitivity at low temperature, was used as a catalyst. P-84 that can be operated under $250^{\circ}C$ was used as a felt. The catalytic activity and filtration efficiency of catalytic filters were investigated under the operating conditions, including temperature, face velocity, and dust concentration. The catalytic activity of catalytic filter increased with increasing temperature and the amount of catalyst loaded. The test results showed that the filtration efficiency was primarily affected by the face velocity. Pressure drop variations as a function of time were investigated for a variety of conditions. In case of virgin filter, a dramatic decrease in the pulse interval and a slightly increase in the base line pressure drop were observed. A relatively slow pressure drop build-up was recorded for the catalytic filter due to smooth and slippery surface characteristics of nanofiber. The catalytic filter indicated that high filtration efficiency over 99.98% and high catalytic activity over 90% at 1 m/min and $210^{\circ}C$.

  • The objective of the present study was to evaluate catalytic performance of a commercial catalyst (Co/$ZrO_2-Al_2O_3$) for the decomposition of perfluorinated chemicals in a pilot scale reactor containing 30 L of catalysts. At a reaction condition of GHSV $1,800h^{-1}$, $T_{95}$ of $SF_6$ was increased from 580 to $610^{\circ}C$ with increasing of $SF_6$ concentration from 1,000 to 10,000 ppm. $T_{95}$ of $SF_6$ in catalytic decomposition was much smaller than that of thermal decomposition ($1,600^{\circ}C$). The 99% conversion of $SF_6$ was maintained for 72 hours a reaction temperature of $650^{\circ}C$. In order to maintain the $SF_6$ conversion more than 99%, it is necessary to operate at a reaction condition of GHSV less than $2,000h^{-1}$. An operating temperature of $710^{\circ}C$ was required to achieve >95% destruction of the $CF_4$, which was much higher than that of catalytic decomposition of $SF_6$.

  • Alunite occurs as massive, cavity-filling and veinlets in the Cretaceous Hwangsan Formation in the Sungsan mine, Korea. It is a hydrothermal alteration product of rhyolitic tuffs, and associated with dickite, quartz and barite. The average chemical formula of alunite in the mine is $(K_{0.93}Na_{0.07})_{1.00}Al_{3.00}(SO_4)_{2.00}(OH)_6$. Atomic percentage of Na substituting for K in A site of the alunite structure varies from 5.9 to 9.2. Unit-cell volume and c dimension decrease with increasing Na atomic percentage. On the basis of thermal and high temperature XRD analyses, the decomposition of alunite into $KAl(SO_4)_2$ and $NaAl(SO_4)_2$ concomitant with the liberation of structural water (12.86%) occurs at about $550^{\circ}C$. The reconstruction of $KAl(SO_4)_2$ and $NaAl(SO_4)_2$ to $Al_2(SO_4)_3$, arcanite and thenardite, and the crystallization of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ take place at about $720^{\circ}C$. The destruction of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ structure takes place at about $760^{\circ}C$ removing 3/4 of total $SO_3$ (27.32%).

  • A new HPLC method for determining malonaldehyde content in lipid peroxidation systems was developed and antioxidant activities of $\alpha$-, $\beta$- carotene, lutein and lycopene were compared by a newly developed HPLC analysis and by TBA value. In addition, malonaldehyde forming ability of rat liver microsome was determined depending on thawing numbers. As results, malonaldehyde was eluted at a retention o f5.60 min and showed a linear relationship between peak area and concentration in standard curve. The MA content of microsome decreased with thawing numbers possible by destruction of cellular membranes. Lycopene, lutein and $\alpha$-carotene showed stronger antioxidant activities than $\beta$-carotene of DL-$\alpha$-tocopherol both in Fe+3-ADP/NADPH and in paraquat/NADPH system. The inhibitory effects of carotenoids and DL-$\alpha$-tocopherol on Fe+3-ADP/NADPH lipid peroxidation system was similar by TBA value and by the HPLC analysis for malonaldehyde.
