  • The destruction of synthetic acetic acid wastewater was carried out using UV, $O_3$, $H_2O_2$, $Fe^{2+}$ oxidants in various combinations by the advanced oxidation processes. $UV/H_2O_2$, $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$, $O_3$, $O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes were tested. $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$, $O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes shows the most effective destruction efficiency at low pH (3.5) condition of wastewater, but $UV/H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ processes were observed less than 20%. Destruction efficiency was gradually increased with the reaction time in the $O_3/H_2O_2$ and $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$ processes, in case of the $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ and $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes shows rapid increasing of destruction efficiency within 90 min, then slightly decreasing with time. The destruction efficiencies of $UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$, $O_3/H_2O_2$, $UV/O_3/H_2O_2$ and $UV/O_3/H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ processes were observed 55, 66, 66 and 64%, respectively.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the destruction efficiency and to determine the fundamental parameters of oxidation kinetics under the supercritical water(SCW) condition. Target material was cephradine, toxic and antibiotic material, in the pharmaceutical wastewater. For this purpose, the effect of reaction temperature and oxidant were investigated on the destruction efficiency of cephradine. And the oxidation kinetics of cephradine was derived by using a empirical power-law model. The experiment was carried out in a cylindrical batch reactor made of Hastelloy C-276 which was endurable high temperature and pressure. The destruction efficiency of cephradine increased with increment of the temperature and reaction time. Also the type of oxidants was effected and oxidants(Air and $H_2O$$_2$) were enhanced the destruction efficiency. The global oxidation kinetics for cephradine has led to two rate expressions according to type of oxidant. - In the presence of air oxidant: Rate=k. $e^{-Ea}$RT/(Ceph.)$^{1.0}$ ( $O_2$)$^{0.51}$$\pm$0.05(k=3.27${\times}$$10^{5}$ sec. Ea=63.25 kJ/mole) - In the presence of $H_2O$$_2$ oxidant : Rate=kㆍ $e^{-Ea}$RT/(Ceph.)$^{1.0}$ ($H_2O$$_2$)$^{0.62}$$\pm$0.02(k=2.76${\times}$$10^4$/sec. Ea=47.65 kJ/mole)ole))

  • The degradation of o-chlorophenol(o-CP) in the presence of NaOH and the byproducts formed were investigated in a supercritical water(SCW) destruction process. The conversion of o-CP in the absence of NaOH was less than 20%, however it showed 100% conversion in the presence of NaOH(mole ratio[NaOH]/[o-CP] over than 2) with a residence time of less than 1 second. The formation of PAHs and the phenolic compounds formed were decreased in the presence of NaOH. The results revealed that the formation of byproducts during the destruction of o-CP in SCW was effected by the addition of NaOH. Phenol, cresols, chlorinated phenols, PAHs, p,p'-dihydroxybiphenyl and oxygenated polyaromatic compounds such as 1-indanone, dibenzofuran and dibenzo-p-dioxin were detected in both conditions(presence and absence of NaOH). At the same time, in the presence of NaOH, 2-ethylphenol, o-hydroxyacetophenone, hydroquinone, 4-allylphenol, 3-phenoxyphenol and 4,4'-oxybisphenol were also detected. The observed results suggest that the destruction of o-CP in SCW with NaOH occurs through a number of complicated reaction pathways. Dibenzofuran and dibenzo-p-dioxin were also detected during destruction of o-CP by SCW. The above observation suggests that there may be a common relationship between the thermal incineration process and SCW decomposition process.

  • The photocatalytic degradation of Mordant Yellow-12 (MY-12) was investigated using a UV-Visible Spectrophotometer and pH meter. The UV-Visible absorbance spectra of the MY-12 contaminated water before and after treatment were presented in figure. The decrease of absorbance occurs at the range of 250 and 450 nm, this result suggests that photocatalytic degradation involves destruction of the aromatic rings in this experiment. More than 32% of the MY-12 was decomposed after one hour in 26-W fluorescent lamp, whereas it was 17% and 24% respectively in 15-W and 21-W lamps. MY-12 was decomposed completely after three hours in 26-W fluorescent lamp. The destruction rate constants were calculated from the change of absorbance and pH.

  • This study examines the local ozone photochemistry in the urban air. The photochemical formation and destruction of ozone was modeled using a photochemical box model. For the model prediction of ozone budget, measurements were carried out from an urban monitoring station in Seoul ($37.6^{\circ}N,\;127^{\circ}E$), Korea for intensive sampling time period (Jun. $1\~15$, 2003). Photochemical process is likely to play significant role in higher ozone concentrations during the sampling period. The results of model simulation indicated that photochemical ozone production pathway was the reaction of NO with $HO_2$ while ozone destruction was mainly controlled by a photochemical destruction pathway, a reaction of $H_2O$ with $O(^1D).$ The contribution of NMHCs to formation and destruction of ozone in the urban was significant. This was entirely different from remote marine environment. The rates of net photochemical ozone production ranged from 0.1 to 1.3 ppbv $h^{-1}$ during the study period.

  • UV-catalytic oxidation technique was applied for the treatment of bio-refractory character of the leachate, which is generally present in the form of adsorbable organic halogens (AOX). Destruction of AOX was likely to be governed by pH adjustment, quantitative measurement of oxidants, and the selection of oxidation model type. Peroxide induced degradation ($UV/H_2O_2$) facilitated the chemical oxidation of organic halides in acidic medium, however, the system showed least AOX removal efficiency than the other two systems. Increased dosage of hydrogen peroxide (from 0.5 time to 1.0 time concentration) even did not contribute to a significant increase in the removal rate of AOX. In ozone induced degradation system ($UV/O_3$), alkaline medium (pH 10) favored the removal of AOX and the removal rate was found 11% higher than the rate at pH 3. Since efficiency of the $UV/O_3$ increases with the increase of pH, therefore, more OH-radicals were available for the destruction of organic halides. UV-light with the combination of both ozone and hydrogen peroxide ($UV/H_2O_2$ 0.5 time/$O_3$ 25 mg/min) showed the highest removal rate of AOX and the removal efficiency was found 26% higher than the removal efficiency of $UV/O_3$. The system $UV/H2O_2/O_3$ got the economic preference over the other two systems since lower dose of hydrogen peroxide and relatively shorter reaction time were found enough to get the highest AOX removal rate.

  • The LiN $i_{l-y}$ $Co_{y}$ $O_2$ samples were synthesized at 80$0^{\circ}C$ and 85$0^{\circ}C$, by the solid-state reaction method, from the various starting materials LiOH, L $i_2$C $O_3$, NiO, NiC $O_3$, $Co_3$ $O_4$, CoC $O_3$, and their electrochemical properties are investigated. The LiN $i_{l-y}$ $Co_{y}$ $O_2$ pre-pared from L $i_2$C $O_3$, NiO, and $Co_3$ $O_4$ exhibited the $\alpha$-NaFe $O_2$ structure of the rhombohedral system (space group; R3m). As the Co content increased, the lattice parameters a and c decreased. The reason is that the radius of Co ion is smaller than that of Ni ion. The increase in da shows that two-dimensional structure develops better as the Co content increases. The LiN $i_{0.7}$ $Co_{03}$. $O_2$[HOO(800,0.3)] synthesized at 80$0^{\circ}C$from LiOH, NiO, and $Co_3$ $O_4$ exhibited the largest first discharge capacity 162 mAh/g. The size of particles increases roughly as the valve of y increases. The samples with the larger particles have the larger first discharge capacities. The cycling performances of the samples with the first discharge capacity larger than 150 mAh/g were investigated. The LiN $i_{0.9}$ $Co_{0.1}$ $O_2$[COO(850,0.1)] synthesized at 85$0^{\circ}C$ from L $i_2$C $O_3$, NiO, and $Co_3$ $O_4$ showed an excellent cycling performance. The sample with the larger first discharge capacity will be under the more severe lattice destruction, due to the expansion and contraction of the lattice during intercalation and deintercalation, than the sample with the smaller first discharge capacity. As the first discharge capacity increases, the capacity fading rate thus increases.increases.s.s.s.

  • Destruction process of toluene using a wire-cylindrical BBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) reactor packed with catalysts was investigated to characterize the synergetic effects of non-thermal plasma and catalyst process. The catalysts used in the present study were ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$BO$_3$ and Pt/${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$. Under the numerous test conditions, specific energy density (SED (J/L)) and the conversion of toluene, defined as (1 -[C$_{f}$]/[C$_{i}$]), were measured. The test results showed that toluene decomposition efficiency followed the pseudo-first order in the case of plasma only process. The pseudo-first order process, however, was modified to pseudo-zeroth order reaction in the case of catalyst-assisted plasma process. This modification of the reaction order was verified based on a simple kinetic model proposed in the present study. Owing to the modification of reaction order, which resulted from the catalytic process, the specific energy to achieve the high removal efficiencies, i.e. 80~90%, was reduced significantly.y.y.

  • This paper has studied to obtain the grinding characteristics and optimal grinding renditions of ceramic materials in the grinding with diamond wheel by the experimental plan method. The load on wheel by varying the feed rate was related with the surface roughness due to the minute destruction phenomenon of grains for the Si$_3$${N^4} and Zr{O_2}$. The depth of cut is related with the surface roughness because the grinding is carried out by grain shedding process due to the brittle fracture phenomenon for the ${Al_2}{O_3}$. The major factors affecting the surface roughness and the optimum grinding conditions were obtained with minimum experiments using the experimental plan method.
