  • Gasification converts coal and other feedstocks into a very clean and usable gas, called syngas, that can be used to produce a wide variety products such as electricity, chemicals, transports fuels, hydrogen production, etc. This paper was studied the gasification performance effects with the variation of the gasification operating parameters such as the feeding amounts of oxygen, steam and coal. When $O_2/coal$ ratio was below 0.8, $H_2$ mole % was increased as increasing $O_2/coal$ ratio. CO mole % was increased when $O_2/coal$ ratio was below 1.2 as increasing the $O_2/coal$ ratio. As increasing steam/coal ratio, $H_2$ mole %was increased and CO mole % was decreased. The $O_2/coal$ and steam/coal ratio was $0.8{\sim}0.9$ and $0.0{\sim}0.4$, respectively, to keep the proper gasification condition that the gasifier temperature was $1300^{\circ}C{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$ and the cold gas efficiency was over 76%.

  • Coal gasification is heading for a great future as one of the cleanest energy sources, which can produce not only electricity and heat, but also gaseous and liquid fuels from the synthesis. The work focuses on 300MW shell type one-stage entrained flow coal gasifier which is used in the Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle(IGCC) plant as a reactor. As constructing an IGCC plant is considerably complicated and expensive compared with a pulverized-coal power plant, it is important to determine optimum design factors and operating conditions using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. In this study, the results of numerical calculations show that $O_2$/Coal ratio, 0.83, Steam/Coal ratio, 0.05, coal particle diameter, $100{\mu}m$, injection angle, $4^{\circ}$ (clockwise) are the most optimum in this research.

  • Ash remaining after coal combustion was used as a catalyst support for tar steam reforming with various proportions of $Al_2O_3$ added for higher reforming efficiency. At a constant Ni content of 12 wt%, a coal ash and $Al_2O_3$ were mixed at a ratio of 5:5, 7:3, 9:1. As a result, the catalytic activity for toluene steam reforming was improved by adding $Al_2O_3$ at $500-600^{\circ}C$. The catalysts with ratio 7:3 and 5:5 reached toluene conversion of 100% above $700^{\circ}C$. When comparing the catalysts in which the coal ash and $Al_2O_3$ mixed at a ratio of 5:5 and 7:3 with the Ni/Al catalyst, it was concluded that this coal ash catalyst has efficient catalytic performance.

  • The investigation of clean and environment-friendly coal utilization technology is actively progressed due to high oil price and serious climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, the plasma gasification was performed using a 6kW microwave plasma unit under various reaction conditions: the particle sizes of coal ($45{\mu}m-150{\mu}m$), $O_2$/fuel ratio (0 - 1.3), and steam/fuel ratio (0 - 1.5). The $H_2$ composition decreases with decreasing coal particle size. With increasing $O_2$/fuel ratio, the $H_2$ composition in the syngas decreased while the $CO_2$ composition increased. As the steam/fuel ratio increased from 0 to 1.5, the $H_2$ composition in the syngas increased while the $CO_2$ composition decreased. From the results, it was proven that the variation of syngas composition greatly affected by $O_2$/fuel ratio than steam/fuel ratio. The $H_2$ composition in the syngas, carbon conversion, and cold gas efficiency increased with increasing plasma power.

  • Mathematical models for various steps in coal gasification reactions were developed and applied to investigate the effects of operation parameters on dynamic behavior of gasification process. Chemical reactions considered in these models were pyrolysis, volatile combustion, water shift reaction, steam-methane reformation, and char gasification. Kinetics of heterogeneous reactions between char and gaseous agents was based on Random pore model. Momentum balance and Stokes' law were used to estimate the residence time of solid particles (char) in an up-flow reactor. The effects of operation parameters on syngas composition, reaction temperature, carbon conversion were verified. Parameters considered here for this purpose were $O_2$-to-coal mass ratio, pressure of reactor, composition of coal, diameter of char particle. On the basis of these parametric studies some quantitative parameter-response relationships were established from both dynamic and steady-state point of view. Without depending on steady state approximation, the present model can describe both transient and long-time limit behavior of the gasification system and accordingly serve as a proto-type dynamic simulator of coal gasification process. Incorporation of heat transfer through heterogenous boundaries, slag formation and steam generation is under progress and additional refinement of mathematical models to reflect the actual design of commercial gasifiers will be made in the near futureK.

  • In order to develop the carbonation process as a core technology of zero emission coal power plant, study on characterization of methane steam reforming (MSR) which is main reaction of this process was carried out. The effects of gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), steam/carbon (S/C) ratio and pressure in the MSR using reforming catalyst were investigated. The equilibrium composition of the gases produced in the MSR were obtained below GHSV 7,000 hr$\^$-1/. The operating conditions of carbonation process using hybrid reaction (MSR+CO$_2$ adsorption using CaO) were 700∼800$^{\circ}C$ and S/C ratio of 2.5∼3. The equilibrium mixture of gases composed of 75∼78% H$_2$ and 8∼9% CO$_2$ at atmospheric pressure and 60∼78% H$_2$ and 9∼l1% CO$_2$ at 1∼30 atm respectively under above operating conditions.

  • This paper presents results on $CO_2$ gasification of 17 raw coals containing a wide range of volatile matter (21-57 wt%). The gasification is performed using a TGA under $CO_2$ and also under $N_2$ atmosphere. An amount of weight loss with increasing temperature is proportional to that of volatile matter in a coal under $N_2$ atmosphere. Reactivity of $CO_2$ gasification also increases with a content of volatile matter. However, the correlation is a little scattered. Oxygenated functional groups in a coal are generally reactive and therefore, an increase in O/C ratio leads to enhanced reactivity. However, $CO_2$ reactivity is affected by neither H/C ratio nor a content of ashes that possibly activate the gasification reaction. These findings are also applicable to steam coal gasification and the reactivity series are confirmed in the test at a fixed bed reactor.

  • A series of activated carbons were prepared from coconut shells and coal-tar pitch binder by physical activation with steam in this study. The effect of variable processes such as activation temperature, activation time and ratio of mixing was investigated for optimizing those preparation parameters. The activation processes were carried out continuously. The nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K on pellet-shaped activated carbons show the same trend of Type I by IUPAC classification. The average pore sizes were about 19-21${\AA}$. The specific surface areas ($S_{BET}$) of pellet typed ACs increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. Specific surface area of AC treated for 90 min at temperature $900^{\circ}C$ was 1082 $m^2/g$. The methylene blue numbers continuously increased with increasing the activation temperature and time. On the other hand, iodine numbers highly increased till activation time of 60 min, but the rate of increase of iodine numbers decreased after that time. This indicates that new micropores were created and the existing micropores turned into mesopores and macropores because of increased reactivity of carbon surface and $H_2O$.
