Leachate from landfill sites contains high organics, chloride and ammonium nitrogen in concentration which might be potentially major pollutants to surface and groundwater environment. Most of landfill leachate treatment plants in Korea consist of biological processes to remove BOD and nitrogen. However, the efficiencies of refractory organics removal, nitrification and denitrification have not met frequently the national effluent regulation of wastewater treatment facility, especially in winter season. Simultaneous removal of organics and nitrogen from leachate is strongly necessitated to meet the national regulation on effluents from leachate treatment facilities. The intermittently aerated biological activated carbon fluidized bed(IABACFB) process was applied to treat real landfill leachates containing refractory organics and high concentration of ammonium nitrogen. The IABACFB reactor consisted of a single bed in which BAC fluidizing and an aerating column. The fluidized bed is intermittently aerated through the blower located at the aerating column. Experiments were performed to evaluate the applicability of Intermittently Aerated BACFB for simultaneous removal of refractory organic carbon and ammonium nitrogen of leachate. Organics and ammonia nitrogen($NH{_4}{^+}-N$)are oxidized during the aerobic stage, and nitrite-nitrate nitrogen($NO{_x}{^-}-N$) are removed to nitrogen gas through denitrification reaction during anoxic state. The IABACFB reactor condition reached a steady state within 40 days since the reactors had been operated. The blowing mode of 60 min.-On/60 min.-OFF is more compatible to remove TOC and ($NH{_4}{^+}-N$) operated. The blowing mode of 60 min.-On/60 min.-OFF is more compatible to remove TOC and ($NH{_4}{^+}-N$) simultaneously than the mode of 30 min.-On/90 min.-OFF. The average removal efficiencies of TOC, the refractory organic carbon, and the average efficiencies of nitrification and denitrification were 90%, 75%, 80%, 95%, respectively.
In this study, simulation results of nitrogen and phosphorus removals and microbial activities for an $A_2O$ process in wastewater treatment plant are presented by using Activated Sludge Models (ASMs). Simulations were performed using pre-calibrated model and layout implemented in GPS-X simulation software. The models were used to investigate variations of SRT, water temperature, DO and C/N ratio effect on nutrients removal and microbial activity. According to the simulated results, the successful nitrification required SRT higher than 10.3 days, whereas increase of $NO_3$-N loading in the anaerobic reactor caused phosphorus release by PAOs; the effluent $NH_4$-N showed rapid change between $12^{\circ}C$(21.7 mg/L) and $13^{\circ}C$(3.2 mg/L); the effluent phosphorus was increased up to 1.9 mg/L at water temperature of $25^{\circ}C$; the DO increase was positive for heterotrophs and autotrophs growths but negative for PAOs growth; the PAOs showed low activity when C/N ratio was lower than 2.5. The experimental results indicated that the calibrated models can assure the prediction quality of the ASMs and can be used to optimize the $A_2O$ process.

Objectives: This study evaluated the amount of remaining root canal filling materials after retreatment procedures performed by undergraduate students using manual, rotary, and reciprocating techniques through micro-computed tomographic analysis. The incidence of instrument fracture and the instrumentation time were also evaluated. Materials and Methods: Thirty maxillary single rooted teeth were prepared with Reciproc R25 files and filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer by the continuous wave of condensation technique. Then, the specimens were assigned to 3 groups (n = 10), according to the retreatment technique used: manual, rotary, and reciprocating groups, which used K-file, Mtwo retreatment file, and Reciproc file, respectively. Retreatments were performed by undergraduate students. The sample was scanned after root canal filling and retreatment procedures, and the images of the canals were examined to quantify the amount of remaining filling material. The incidence of instrument fracture and the instrumentation time were recorded. Results: Remaining filling material was observed in all specimens regardless of the technique used. The mean volume of remaining material was significantly lower in the Reciproc group than in the manual K-file and Mtwo retreatment groups (p < 0.05). The time required to achieve a satisfactory removal of canal filling material and refinement was significantly lower in the Mtwo retreatment and Reciproc groups (p < 0.05) when compared to the manual K-file group. No instrument fracture was observed in any of the groups. Conclusions: Reciproc was the most effective instrument in the removal of canal fillings after retreatments performed by undergraduate students.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the shaping ability of the TruShape and Reciproc Blue systems and the apical extrusion of debris after root canal instrumentation. The ProTaper Universal system was used as a reference for comparison. Materials and Methods: Thirty-three mandibular premolars with a single canal were scanned using micro-computed tomography and were matched into 3 groups (n = 11) according to the instrumentation system: TruShape, Reciproc Blue and ProTaper Universal. The teeth were accessed and mounted in an apparatus with agarose gel, which simulated apical resistance provided by the periapical tissue and enabled the collection of apically extruded debris. During root canal preparation, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite was used as an irrigant. The samples were scanned again after instrumentation. The percentage of unprepared area, removed dentin, and volume of apically extruded debris were analyzed. The data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test for multiple comparisons at a 5% significance level. Results: No significant differences in the percentage of unprepared area were observed among the systems (p > 0.05). ProTaper Universal presented a higher percentage of dentin removal than the TruShape and Reciproc Blue systems (p < 0.05). The systems produced similar volumes of apically extruded debris (p > 0.05). Conclusions: All systems caused apically extruded debris, without any significant differences among them. TruShape, Reciproc Blue, and ProTaper Universal presented similar percentages of unprepared area after root canal instrumentation; however, ProTaper Universal was associated with higher dentin removal than the other systems.
Purpose: Metacarpal fractures are common hand injury that may require operative intervention to ensure adequate reduction and stabilization. Traditionally, titanium miniplate was used for rigid fixation of bone fractures. However, the use of permanent plate lends itself to multiple complications such as infection, exposure of the hardware, tendon adhesions, tendon rupture, prolonged pain, bony atrophy and osteoporosis (stress shielding), metal sensitization, and palpation under the skin. This study evaluated the usefulness and stability of biodegradable plates and screws for treatment of metacarpal bone fractures. Methods: There was 17 patients who had surgery for metacarpal bone fracture from April 2007 to June 2010. All patients had open reduction and internal fixation. We used absorbable plates and screws (Inion CPS$^{(R)}$) for internal fixation. Postoperative results were assessed with x-ray. Stability of plates and screws, healing process and its complications were observed by clinical and radiographic assessment. Results: All patients were successfully reduced of bone fracture, and fixations with absorbable plates and screws were stable. The mean follow up period was 7.1 months. 2 patients complained postoperative pain, but they were relieved with analgesics. All patients experienced transient stiffness, but they were relieved with active assistive range of motion after removal of splint. No patients suffered complications which could be occurred by using metallic plate. Conclusion: There was no critical complications such as re-fracture or nonunion among patients. No patients suffered side effects related with metallic implants. Biodegradable implants can offer clinically stable and attractive alternative to metallic implants to stabilize metacarpal bone fractures in the hand.

Although the most commonly encountered orbital tumor is metastatic tumor, adenocarcinoma of stomach metastasized to the optic nerve is rarely reported. The authors discuss a rare case of metastatic adenocarcinoma of left optic nerve with a review of literature. A 44-year-old man presented with decreased visual acuity of left eye for 3 months. Neurologic examination revealed left optic neuropathy. On MR imaging, a homogenously wellenhanced mass surrounding left optic nerve around optic canal was noticed. The X-rays and the whole body bone scan sho-wed multiple bony metastasis. Subtotal removal was performed via combined subfrontal and pterional approach and metastatic adenocarcinoma from the stomach was confirmed histologically. Postoperative course was uneventful, but there was no improvement of visual acuity.
This represents a case report of the retained polyethylene catheter fragment in superior vena cava. A 39 year old male was admitted to this Korea University Hospital a short time after compression wound on abdomen with heavy cement material in emergency room, a polyethylene catheter was introduced into the right subclavian vein through a needle. But when the polyethylene catheter was attempted to withdraw the catheter was severed by the beveled tip of the needle. Later that day, chest X-ray disclosed the presence of the fragment extending from right subclavian vein to the superior vena cava. {Fig. 1 and Fig. 2]. Local exploration by way of an infraclavicular incision was unsuccessful in locating the catheter fragment. Another attempt was then made remove the catheter by means a biotome, which is originally a device for the biopsy of the myocardium, introduced through the right great saphenous vein. This procedure, though well tolerated by the patient, was in vain. After 11 days later, during that time he was taken a laparotomy with drain, another operation for removal of retained catheter fragment was performed through median sternotomy. After exposure of the right subclavian vein, innominate vein, and superior vena cava, an incision 1 cm in |length was made directly over the palpated catheter. The catheter immediately was picked upward and removed. The length of the catheter was approximately 8 cm. [Fig 3 ] There was no evidence of thromboembolism from the catheter or other complications. The patient made an uneventful recovery, and was discharged asymptomatic on the 9th postoperative day.

Numerical analysis has been performed to understand flow characteristics in the reactor with bag filters in an integrated adsorption/catalytic process which can treat dioxin and $NO_{x}$ together. Computational fluid dynamics technique was employed with Euler-Lagrangian model to consider flue gas and activated carbon particles simultaneously, so that residence time of flue gas and activated carbon particle could be obtained from the numerical analysis directly. The numerical analysis has been performed with different three particle sizes and compared each flow characteristics with particle's size. Fundamental flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles, pressure distribution, residence time of flue gas and activated carbon particles, and distribution of activated carbon have been obtained from the numerical analysis. Flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles in the reactor were very complicated and they moved along very various paths. Therefore, their residence time in the reactor was also various. The results obtained would be effectively used to estimate the removal efficiency in the reactor once the residence time is combined with the reaction equation.
Small sized manganese dioxide particles are immobilized onto the surface of sand by the wet impregnation process. The surface morphology of the solid, i.e., immobilized manganese dioxide natural sand (IMNS) is performed by taking scanning electron microscope images and characterized by the X-ray diffraction data. The specific surface area of the solid is obtained, which shows a significant increase in the specific surface area obtained by the immobilization of manganese dioxide. The $pH_{PZC}$ (point of zero charge) is found to be 6.28. Further, the IMNS is assessed in the removal of As(III) and As(V) pollutants from aqueous solutions under the batch and column operations. Batch reactor experiments are conducted for various physicochemical parametric studies, viz. the effect of sorptive pH (pH 2.0-10.0), concentration (1.0-25.0 mg/L), and background electrolyte concentrations (0.0001-0.1 mol/L $NaNO_3$). Further, column experiments are conducted to obtain the efficiency of IMNS under dynamic conditions. The breakthrough data obtained by the column experiments are employed in non-linear fitting to the Thomas equation, so as to estimate the loading capacity of the column for As(III) and As(V).

An integrated adsorption/catalytic process has been considered to treat dioxin and $NO_x$ simultaneously. The process consists of a cyclone and a reactor with nine bag filters. In this study, numerical analysis has been performed to understand flow characteristics with inflow-duct types in the reactor. To consider flue gas and activated carbon particles simultaneously, Euler-Lagrangian model was employed. Fundamental flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles, pressure distribution and distribution of activated carbon have been obtained from the numerical analysis. Also trace length and residence time of flue gas, residence time of activated carbon particles have been calculated directly. Flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles in the reactor were very complicated and they moved along very various paths. Therefore, their residence time in the reactor was also various. The flow characteristics in the reactor were strongly influenced by inflow-duct types. The results obtained would be effectively used to estimate the removal efficiency in the reactor once the residence time is combined with the reaction equation.
