  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of premixed fuel on the reduction of exhaust emissions in premixed charge compression ignition engine. The premixed fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber. The pre-mixture is ignited by a small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the case of gasoline as a premixed fuel of the engine, $NO_x$ and smoke concentration of exhaust emissions were reduced compared with the conventional diesel engine. But in the event of diesel fuel for premixed fuel, the rate of smoke reduction was small compared with the case of gasoline as a premixed fuel. HC and CO emissions were increased at high premixed ratio in the case of two premixed fuels. The combustion characteristics of the engine such as the combustion pressure, the rate of heat release, and other characteristics are compared.

  • Compressed natural gas (CNG) is well known as one of the cleanest burning alternative fuels. Bi-fuel CNG vehicle can also run on gasoline or another fuel while dedicated natural gas vehicle is designed to run on natural gas only. Recently, increased attention has been focused on bi-fuel CNG/LPG taxi because of good fuel economy of CNG. A number of LPG taxis modified to CNG Bi-fuel vehicles are running in many cities. In this paper, the emissions characteristics of in-use passenger cars running on CNG and LPG were investigated. Chassis dynamometer test was used to measure exhaust emissions from an in-use fleet of 5 cars. Exhaust emissions were collected for CVS-75 driving mode. The test results showed that for CNG fuel mode, CO, $CO_2$ and NMHC emissions decreased to 9%, 12% and 14% respectively, and $CH_4$ and $NO_x$ emissions increased to 317% and 47% respectively.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to analyze the effects of EGR ratio on the combustion, exhaust emissions characteristics and size distributions of particulate matter in a single cylinder diesel engine with common-rail injection system fueled with biodiesel derived from soybean. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emissions and measurement of size distributions of particulate matter were carried out under various EGR ratio which was varied from 20~60% and the results were compared to those of results without EGR. The experimental results show that ignition delay was extended and maximum value of rate of heat release (ROHR) was decreased according to increasing of EGR ratio. In addition, oxidies of nitrogen ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced but soot emissions were increased under increasing of EGR ratio. However, under higher EGR ratio region, soot was slightly decreased. And then the particulate size distribution shows that high exhaust gas temperature restrain the formation of soluble organic fraction (SOF) which were beyond the accumulation mode (100~300nm) and lead to increase of nuclei mode particles.

  • In this study, bulk nickel-carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites are synthesized by a novel method which includes a combination of ultrasonication, electrical explosion of wire in liquid and spark plasma sintering. The mechanical characteristics of the bulk Ni-CNT composites synthesized with CNT contents of 0.7, 1, 3 and 5 wt.% are investigated. X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques are used to observe the different phases, morphologies and structures of the composite powders as well as the sintered samples. The obtained results reveal that the as-synthesized composite exhibits substantial enhancement in the microhardness and values more than 140 HV are observed. However an empirical reinforcement limit of 3 wt.% is determined for the CNT content, beyond which, there is no significant improvement in the mechanical properties.

  • For the purpose of collecting fog droplets as a function of size a new sampling method was developed in this study. Formation of 100$\pm$10㎛ thickness of polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) on a nuclepore filter could be successfully realized. Also applicability of particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method to the chemical analysis of size-segregated fog droplets collected on PWAF was examined experimentally with synthetic fog droplets generated from a nebulizer. Absorption capacity of S-PAAS polymeric water absorbent shows marked decreases in the range less than 1 wt% and slight decrease between 1 and 3.5 wt% of every salt concentration. Dependency of absorption capacity on pH shows the maximum at pH 7. No apparent peak which can influence the quantitative analysis of elements dissolved and suspended in fog droplets was found at PIXE spectrum of PWAF blank. PWAF kept the original shape without rupture under the PIXE analytical conditions of beam intensity for 10 to 60 nA and irradiation time of 4∼5 min. It should be said that the proposed new technique in the work is helpful to get more detailed information of fog droplets, to clarify the fog formation processes, and to develop a model of acid deposition process.

  • Aluminum nitride fibers were synthesized by carbothermal reduction and nitridation of precursor fibers obtained by electrospinning. The starting materials used to synthesize the AlN fibers were $Al(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ and urea. Polyvinylpyrrolidone with increasing viscidity was used as the carbon source to obtain a composite solution. The mixed solution was drawn into a plastic syringe with a stainless steel needle, which was used as the spinneret and connected to a 20 kV power supply. A high voltage was supplied to the solution to facilitate the formation of a dense net of fibers on the collector. The precursor fibers were dried at $100^{\circ}C$ and then heated to $1,400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in a microwave furnace under $N_2$ gas flow for the carbothermal reduction and nitridation. X-ray diffraction studies indicated that the synthesized fibers consisted of the AlN phase. Field emission scanning electron microscopy studies indicated that the diameter of the calcined fibers was approximately 100 nm.

  • Biodiesel is a clean energy resource that can replace diesel as fuel, which can be used without any structural changes to the engine. Vegetable oil accounts for 95 percent of the raw materials used to produce biodiesel. Thus, many problems can arise, such as rising prices of food resources and an imbalance between supply and demand. Most of the previous studies using waste cooking oil used waste cooking oil from a single material. However, the waste cooking oil that is actually collected is a mixture of various types of waste cooking oil. Therefore, in this study, biodiesel produced with mixed waste cooking oil was supplied to an agricultural single-cylinder diesel engine to assess its potential as an alternative fuel. Based on the results, the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increased compared to diesel, and the axis power decreased to between 70 and 99% compared to the diesel. For emissions, NOx and CO2 were increased, but CO and HC were decreased by up to 1 to 7% and 16 to 48%, respectively, compared to diesel. The emission characteristics of the mixed waste cooking oil biodiesel used in this study were shown to be similar to those of conventional vegetable biodiesel, confirming its potential as a fuel for mixed waste cooking oil biodiesel.

  • 107P/(4015) Wilson-Harrington is one of possible candidates of the dormant or inactive comet nuclei. It was discovered on a photographic plate exposed with the 48-inch Schmidt at Palomar Observatory on 1949 November 19 UT, displaying the faint extended cometary tail. No comet activity has not been after 1949 apparition. Here we present the optical observations of 107P/(4015) Wilson - Harrington during 2009/2010 apparition taken in search of low-level comet activity. Our photometric and spectroscopic data were collected 28 - 86 days after the perihelion passage on 2009 October 22 in a wide range of solar phase angle of 39-68 degree. A disk-integrated phase function was constructed, giving a geometric albedo of 0.055+/-0.012, phase integral of q=0.34, and Bond albedo of A_B=0.019. The photometric property shows profile similar to low albedo asteroids and comet nuclei. Any emission lines were found in our spectrum, giving a flat reflectance similar to low albedo asteroids. Although we could not find any evidence for the comet activity in our photometric and spectroscopic data, we found an upper limit of the fractional active area of 0.001%. We derived the upper limit of the optical depth of the dust trail and tail 7x10^{-10}. We conclude that 107P/(4015)Wilson-Harrington became completely dormant or inactive in 2009/2010 return.

  • Recently, many researches have been performed to improve the performance of the combustion and emission in a D.I.Diesel engine. And many new techniques have been introduced and developed to reduce NO$_{x}$ and soot exhausted from diesel combustion. Some of these methods have the peculiar injection timing which is not used to traditional timing. To optimize these injection timing, characteristics of swirl flow and interaction of swirl with injection in the diesel engine should be investigated more carefully. Therefore, in this study, 2-zone energy method is adopted for the understanding of swirl flow in condition of moving piston, and then flame visualizations and image process are performed. From these studies, the characteristics of the swirl flow generated by SCV was investigated and the effect of swirl on injection timing was elucidated. As the results, velocity distribution caused by swirl flow increase the space utilization rate of flame plums. And flame plums of weak momentum are remained inside of combustion chamber by the swirl flow.w.
