Mineralogical Characteristic and Occurrence of Tremolite and Actinolite in the Dong-A mine, Korea (동아광산 일대 투각섬석과 양기석의 산출상태 및 광물학적 특성 연구)

  • As results of X-ray diffraction analysis, samples of asbestos and soil were composed maily of dolomite ($CaMg(Co_3)_2$, tremolite ($Ca_2Mg_5Si_{18}O_{22}(OH)_2$), actinolite ($Ca(Mg,\;Fe)_6Si_8O_{22}(OH)_2$), talc ($Mg_3Si_4O_{10}(OH)_2$), calcite ($CaCO_3$) and small amounts of quartz ($SiO_2$) and clay minerals. The average size of asbestos fibers was about $100{\mu}m$ and maximum of some asbestos was $250.0{\mu}m$ in length. The aspect ratio of asbestos fiber were over 3 : 1 and inclined extinction in the range of $8.0-19.5^{\circ}$. Single isolated fragments of asbestos are probably fiber and acicula form in crystal edge along the cleavage plane. Tremolite that composed main asbestos mineral in rock and soil around Dong-a mine is higher content of Fe than actinolite asbestos.

Effect of MgO on the Viscous Behavior of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO Welding Flux System (CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO계 용접 플럭스계의 점성에 미치는 MgO의 영향성에 관한 연구)

  • The viscosities of $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO$ flux were measured under the condition of $CaO/SiO_2=1.0-1.3$ and 5-20 wt%MgO. Submerged arc welding flux with $5wt%Al_2O_3$ content had the lowest critical temperature and widest solid-liquid coexisting region at about 5 wt%MgO. It indicateds that both critical temperature and viscosity depend on the kind of primary phase of molten flux. Viscous behavior of the molten flux at 1773 K was analyzed in the view of silicate structure changed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Based on the critical temperature and the behavior of viscosity at a fixed temperature, it could be proposed that the contents of MgO and $Al_2O_3$ in SAW flux show a pronounced effect on preventing contamination in maintaining the liquid phase flux after welding process.

Dissolution Properties of K2O-CaO-MgO-SiO2-P2O5 Glasses (K2O-CaO-MgO-SiO2-P2O5계 유리의 제조 및 용출특성)

  • For the application of environment conscious glass-fertilizer, dissolution characteristics of phosphate glass was investigated. In 0.1K₂O-0.1SiO₂-0.6P₂O/sub 5/ glass system, the compositions were designed according to variation of CaO & MgO contents, and glass formation region was confirmed. From the glass composition, the confirmed glasses were investigated to figure out thermal and dissolution properties. It was detected that glass transition & softening temperature of the glasses increased with increasing MgO contents. The dissolution properties of the glasses was affected by CaO and MgO content ratio.

  • LTCC 소재로 응용을 위해 Mg-Si-O계 세라믹스에 glass frit을 첨가하여 소결 및 마이크로파 유전특성에 관한 연구를 진행하였다. $Mg_2SiO_4$를 기본조성으로 하고 $B_2O_3-ZnO-Na_2O-SiO_2-Al_2O_3$계 glass를 20~40wt%로 첨가하여 $900^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 소결하였을 때 glass 함량이 증가함에 따라 밀도$(g/cm^3)$ 및 유전율$(\varepsilon_r)$은 증가하였고 품질계수$(Q{\times}f_0)$ 값은 감소하는 경향을 보였다. $900^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 소결한 소결체의 유전특성은 유전율 $(\varepsilon_r)$ = 6.5, 품질계수 $(Q{\times}f_0)$ = 4,000(GHz), 온도계수 $({\tau}_f)={\pm}10ppm/^{\circ}C$로 우수한 특성을 확인하였다. 그리고 Glass Milling 효과에 따른 glass-ceramics 소결체의 미세구조, 마이크로파 유전특성을 비교 고찰하였다.

Investigation on the Sintering Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Al-Zn-Mg Alloy Powders Mixed with Al-Si-SiC Composite Powders (Al-Si-SiC 복합분말과 Al-Zn-Mg계 합금분말이 혼합된 분말의 소결 거동 및 기계적 특성연구)

  • Al-Si-SiC composite powders with intra-granular SiC particles were prepared by a gas atomization process. The composite powders were mixed with Al-Zn-Mg alloy powders as a function of weight percent. Those mixture powders were compacted with the pressure of 700 MPa and then sintered at the temperature of $565-585^{\circ}C$. T6 heat treatment was conducted to increase their mechanical properties by solid-solution precipitates. Each relative density according to the optimized sintering temperature of those powders were determined as 96% at $580^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders (composition A), 97.9% at $575^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders with 5 wt.% of Al-Si-SiC powders (composition B), and 98.2% at $570^{\circ}C$ for Al-Zn-Mg powders with 10 wt.% of Al-Si-SiC powders (composition C), respectively. Each hardness, tensile strength, and wear resistance test of those sintered samples was conducted. As the content of Al-Si-SiC powders increased, both hardness and tensile strength were decreased. However, wear resistance was increased by the increase of Al-Si-SiC powders. From these results, it was confirmed that Al-Si-SiC/Al-Zn-Mg composite could be highly densified by the sintering process, and thus the composite could have high wear resistance and tensile strength when the content of Al-Si-SiC composite powders were optimized.

Development of Technology for Recovering Valuable Metals in Detoxified Waste Asbestos-Containing Waste (무해화된 폐석면에 함유된 유가금속 회수 기술 개발)

  • Studies on the recovery conditions and optimization process for valuable metal recovery through chemical treatment from detoxified asbestos-containing waste composed of calcium silicate, larnite, merwinite, and akermanite were conducted. The main components, Si, Ca, and Mg, of detoxified asbestos-containing waste (DACW) were separated and recovered in the form of SiO2, CaSO4, and Mg(OH)2 compounds, respectively. Each separated component was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP) analysis. The recovery conditions for each component were first treating them with an acid to separate SiO2 and subsequently with H2SO4 to recover Ca in the form of sulfate, CaSO4. The remaining Mg was recovered by precipitation with Mg(OH)2 under strong basic conditions. This study suggested that it is possible to convert existing treatment process of asbestos waste by landfill through recovering the components into a resource-recycling green technology.

Electrical Insulation Properties of Nanocomposites with SiO2 and MgO Filler

  • In this paper, we attempt to improve the electrical characteristics of epoxy resin at high temperature (above $80^{\circ}C$) by adding magnesium oxide (MgO), which has high thermal conductivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the dispersion of specimens with added MgO reveals that they are evenly dispersed without concentration. The dielectric breakdown characteristics of $SiO_2$ and MgO nanocomposites are tested by measurements at different temperatures to investigate the filler's effect on the dielectric breakdown characteristics. The dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with added $SiO_2$ decreases slowly below $80^{\circ}C$ (low temperature) but decreases rapidly above $80^{\circ}C$ (high temperature). However, the gradient of the dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with added MgO is slow at both low and high temperatures. The dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with 0.4 wt% $SiO_2$ is the best among the specimens with added $SiO_2$, and that of specimens with 3.0 wt% and 5.0 wt% MgO is the best among those with added MgO. Moreover, the dielectric strength of specimens with 3.0 wt% MgO at high temperatures is approximately 53.3% higher than that of specimens with added $SiO_2$ at $100^{\circ}C$, and that of specimens with 5.0 wt% of MgO is approximately 59.34% higher under the same conditions. The dielectric strength of MgO is believed to be superior to that of $SiO_2$ owing to enhanced thermal radiation because the thermal conductivity rate of MgO (approximately 42 $W/m{\cdot}K$) is approximately 32 times higher than that of $SiO_2$ (approximately 1.3 $W/m{\cdot}K$). We also confirmed that the allowable breakdown strength of specimens with added MgO at $100^{\circ}C$ is within the error range when the breakdown probability of all specimens is 40%. A breakdown probability of up to 40% represents a stable dielectric strength in machinery and apparatus design.

Discharging Characteristics of Green cell Using MgO-Coated $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ Phosphor in Plasma Display Panel

  • The charging tendency of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ phosphor surface was modified in order to improve discharging characteristic of green cell in an ac-plasma display panel (ac-PDP). The Zinc-silicate ($Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$) green-emitting phosphor was coated with magnesium oxide(MgO), which is viable to have positive charge on the surface. After fabricating the green cell with MgO-coated $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$, the electrical and optical properties in the cell were examined. It was found that the dynamic voltage margin could be increased while the address time was reduced. It may be ascribed to the change of charging tendency of $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ phosphor by MgO coating, which makes it possible to stable wall-charge accumulation. When $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ phosphor was coated with 1.3wt%-MgO, the address time was reduced 1.2 ${\mu}s$ and the address voltage lowered 25 V without any misfiring problem, compared to those of typical $Zn_2SiO_4:Mn^{2+}$ phosphor layer. The luminescence intensity of green cell using MgO-coated phosphor layer was also improved by 10%.

Study on electrical properties of BST thin film with substrates (기판에 따른 BST 박막의 전기적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, We deposited the BST thin-film on p-type (100)Si, (100)MgO and MgO/Si substrates respectively using RF magnetron sputtering method. After the BST thin-fil m was deposited, we performed RTA(rapid thermal anneal) at $600^{\circ}C$, oxygen atmosphere and 1 min. In the XRD measurement, we observed the (110) $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}TiO_3$ main peak in all samples and the peak intensity increased after post annealing. Then we manufactured a capacitor using Al Electrode and measured I-V, C-V. In C-V measurement result values for each substrate, dielectric constant was calculated 120 (bare Si), 305(MgO/Si), 310(MgO) respectively. A leakage current density was present less than 1 $\mu\textrm{A/cm}^2$ at applied fields below 0.3 MV/cm. In conclusion we confirmed that MgO/Si substrates give good results for BST thin-film deposition.

The Crystallization of LiO2-MgO-MgF2-SiO2 Glass System by B2O3 addition (B2O3의 첨가에 따른 저온 소결기판용 LiO2-MgO-MgF2-SiO2계 유리의 결정화에 관 한 연구)

  • 저온소결기판용 Glass-ceramics를 제조하기 위해 LiO2-MgO-MgF2-SiO2계 조성에 서 B2O3첨가가 결정화 특성 및 물성에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. 145$0^{\circ}C$에서용융하여 제조 한 모유리의 핵형성 온도와 결정화 온도를 결정하기 위해 TMA와 DTA분석을 실시하였다. 결정화시킨 유리의 결정상과 미세구조를 관찰하기 위하여 XRD와 SEM관찰을 실시하였다. Water swelling을 통해 Glass-ceramics powder를 제조하였으며 제조한 powder의 평균입자 크기는 8.32$\mu$m였다.
