  • Carbon-based doping to MgB2 superconductor is the simplest approach to enhance the critical current densities under magnetic fields. Carbon quantum dots is synthesized in this work as a carbon provider to MgB2 superconductors. Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone is pyrolyzed and dispersed in dimethylfomamide solvent as a dopant to the mixture of Mg and B powders. Doped MgB2 bulk samples clearly show the decrease of a-axis lattice constant, grain refinements, and broadening of FWHM of diffraction peaks compared to un-doped MgB2 possibly due to the carbon substitution and/or boron vacancy at the boron site in MgB2 lattice. Also, high-field Jc for the doped MgB2 is enhanced significantly with the crossover about 3 T at 5 & 20 K when increasing the doping of carbon quantum dots.

  • The aluminum-magnesium (Al-Mg) aklloys have been proved to be an effective solvent for synthesis of cubic-phase boron nitride (cBN) from hexagonal-phase boron nitride (hBN) at the conditions of high pressures and high temperatures (HP/HT). Various kinds of hBN powders having different crystallinity have been tested for cBN synthesis with Al-Mg solvents. The conversion ratio from hBN to cBN and the shape of synthesized cBN crystals appeared to be affected strongly by chemical composition and added amount of Al-Mg solvents as well as crystallinity of BN powders. As the magnesium content increased in the Al-Mg solvents, the conversion ratio increased and the size of cBN crystals became larger. The crystal facets developed well in the specimens with solvents having high Mg content. It was observed that a hBNlongrightarrowcBN transformation occurred more easily in the specimens having well crystallized hBN powders. Amorphous BN having much $B_2O_3$ impurity exhibited a low threshold temperature for transformation to cBN, which was attributed to crystallization of amorphous BN to well crystallized hBN prior to transformation into cBN with help of $B_2O_3$.

  • Carbon coating approach is used to prepare carbon-doped $MgB_2$ bulk samples using low-cost naphthalene ($C_{10}H_8$) as a carbon source. The coating of carbon (C) on boron (B) powders was achieved by direct pyrolysis of naphthalene at $120^{\circ}C$ and then the C-coated B powders were mixed well with appropriate amount of Mg by solid state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that there is a noticeable shift in (100) and (110) Bragg reflections towards higher angles, while no shift was observed in (002) reflections for $MgB_2$ doped with carbon. As compared to un-doped $MgB_2$, a systematic enhancement in $J_c(H)$ properties with increasing carbon doping level was observed for naphthalene-derived C-doped $MgB_2$ samples. The substantial enhancement in $J_c$ is most likely due to the incorporation of C into $MgB_2$ lattice and the reduction in crystallite size, as evidenced by the increase in the FWHM values for doped samples.

  • $MgB_2$ superconducting properties have been investigated with the surface-treated boron powders using the chemical solvents. Various solvents were used such as acetone, ethanol, methanol, and water to possibly modify the surface condition of raw boron powders as received. This treatment was done at an argon gas environment inside the glove box to reduce the further contamination during and after chemical treatments. It was found that $T_c$ values were increased to 37.58-37.73 K from the pure sample of 37.50 K when they were treated in inert environment. High- fields $J_c$ at both 5 & 20 K was all increased regardless of any kinds of chemical treatments mentioned above. It is also noted that the $J_c$ at low-fields were increased in the order of solvents: ethanol > acetone > pure $MgB_2$ = methanol > water.

  • $MgB_2$ bulk superconductors are synthesized by the solid state reaction of ($MgB_4$+xMg) precursors with excessive Mg compositions (x=1.0, 1.4, 2.0 and 2.4). The $MgB_4$ precursors are synthesized using (Mg+B) powders. The secondary phases ($MgB_4$ and MgO) present in the synthesized $MgB_4$ are removed by $HNO_3$ leaching. It is found that the formation reaction of $MgB_2$ is accelerated when Mg excessive compositions are used. The magnetization curves of $Mg_1+_xB_2$ samples show that the transition from the normal state to the superconducting state of the Mg excessive samples with x=0.5 and x=0.7 are sharper than that of $MgB_2$. The highest $J_c-B$ curve at 5 K and 20 K is achieved for x=0.5. Further addition of Mg decreases the $J_c$ owing to the formation of more pores in the $MgB_2$ matrix and smaller volume fraction of $MgB_2$.

  • Magnetic relaxation properties of pure MgB2 powder samples and diluted water-treated MgB2 powder samples were investigated. The magnetic field H-dependence, m(H), and the time t-dependence, m(t), of the magnetic moment m were measured and analyzed using the PPMS-VSM magnetometer equipment, respectively. The m(t) reduction rates of pure MgB2 powder samples and diluted water-treated MgB2 powder samples decreased to about 0.7 ~ 1.8% and 0.6 ~ 1.0% for about 7200 s, respectively, at temperature T = 15 K. The magnetic relaxation properties of the two types of MgB2 powders were analyzed by calculating the magnetic relaxation rate S = -dln(Mirr)/dln(t) values according to Anderson-Kim theory. The magnetic relaxation ratio S values of the two types of MgB2 powder samples were almost similar. As a result of the quantum creep effect, the constant magnetic relaxation rate S characteristic was confirmed at a temperature range of T = 10 K or less.

  • The self-propagating high temperature synthesis approach was applied to synthesize amorphous boron nano-powders in argon atmospheres. For this purpose, we investigated the characteristics of a thermally induced combustion wave in the $B_2O_3+{\alpha}Mg$ system(${\alpha}=1.0-8.0$) in an argon atmospheres. In this study, the exothermic nature of the $B_2O_3-Mg$ reaction was investigated using thermodynamic calculations. Experimental study was conducted based on the calculation data and the SHS products consisting of crystalline boron and other compounds were obtained starting with a different initial molar ratio of Mg. It was found that the $B_2O_3$ and Mg reaction system produced a high combustion temperature with a rapid combustion reaction. In order to regulate the combustion reaction, NaCl, $Na_2B_4O_7$ and $H_3BO_3$ additives were investigated as diluents. In an experimental study, it was found that all diluents effectively stabilized the reaction regime. The final product of the $B_2O_3+{\alpha}Mg$ system with 0.5 mole $Na_2B_4O_7$ was identified to be amorphous boron nano-powders(< 100 nm).
